My 2nd Attempt at a S. gig, 1st attempt under LeD's

Reef1589

Anemones for life
So i was gonna wait until the 1 month mark to post this just to give myself some sort of clear but i figure id go ahead and post it now..

Date of Purchase - Saturday, April 28th

now here is where people are probably going to yell at me,
the tank he went in was setup about 9 days before hand.. now.. i know... i know.. this is certainly no enviroment for an S. Gigantea... BUT let me give u a back story on it

went to my LFS.. (oh btw.. its a Feed store for Farm's that has a small section of Saltwater stuff.. i go in there from time to time to see what they got... no corals but some decent healthy fish at times.. )
there water is so nutrient rich i dont even think they ever do water changes, for the fact is just looks green.. (kind of like freshwater tanks look, just murky looking water..)..well

so im in there and spot this guy.. kind of dumbfounded..and shocked...that it showed up here.. they had it listed for 45... i talked them down to 20.. (at that price..i had to give it a shot.. with low hopes... )..

now here's the other catch, this s. gig is SEVERELY bleached... it had almost no coloration when i got it.. i had to ask the guy how long they had it for... he said 2 1/2 weeks, i looked at it, Mouth was 100% tight... and it was still really sicky...so i told him to bag it up..

After acclimating i put it on the rock (center display).. and it attached to the rock in literally.. 45 seconds.. it has been in the same spot for 3 weeks, coming up on 4 weeks now..

its n my new 65g Shallow Tank, powered by 2 Mp10's, it doesnt get brutally murdered by flow like some peoples ive seen, but he seemed to enjoy it, and is really opening up now, as you'll see in the pictures he is getting color back.. oh and here is another kicker... he hasnt deflated once.. so as of right now, no Inflate/Deflate cycle.. and he seems to be going strong at this moment...

Now...i know im no where near out of the woods, nor am i celebrating.. or bragging or anything like.. im aware my tank still has some mood swings in it, but considering it has survived this much so far, pretty much the inital cycle.. i think is a good sign, like i said only reason i thought id give it a shot was cause the price was right, and i figured i had to get it out of their murky water.. i wouldnt recommed anyone go out buy an anemone and throw it in a tank that was just setup ... unless they knew it made the success rate that much lower.. i still cant beleive it hasnt deflated at all yet.. thats what has me at such high hopes for this particular one.

Here's 2 videos i got too **Note** in both these video's, my MP10's were kind of at their Subtle point in their mode, there are other times where he gets hit alot harder with the flow..

Week 1

Tonight (week 3) Yes, there is an anemone crab that lives under him.. haha This was also shot literally at the low point of tide on ecosmart mode..

I wish you the best. He is completely bleached (as you know) but otherwise he looks really good - really firm.

HADDDD to post this picture =D made me smile
just took this pic as lights went out, Crab decided to go carpet surfing at lights out

Took with my Galaxy SII Phone, with Flash

For some strange reason, I think the bleached gigs do better than the ones that have normal color but are sick. I've seen 3-4 gigs on this board that are purchased severely bleached and they've survived and colored up. They don't exhibit the short, stubby tentacles, nor do they look as if they are balding, and they don't go through the inflate/deflate death march. I'm starting to wonder if the dead zooxanthellae that are expelled effects the gigs while in transport -- those that bleach prior to shipping do better since they aren't shipped with dead zooxanthellae inside them. Just a hunch.

Good luck with your nem, it definitely looks like the color is coming back.

i seen the same stuff as you D-Nak.

that is the healthiest looking bleached nem i ever seen. hehe i see its getting a little purple is i am not mistaken and its the lights.

Thanks for the encouragement that its looking pretty good so far, aside from the fact its severely bleached but honestly since ive posted this status, i think its regained a significant amount of color in its tips, you'll see the pics this sunday when i do another picture update...=D

On another note, i was just curious why do they suck on themselves like they are sucking a thumb, i know its seen alot in Gig's, just makes me worry sometimes cause where he is sucking.. seems to deflate.. (a small part and just the part that he is sucking) you can actually see it in that last picture i posted with the crab on teh right side..

Much of what these anemones eat in the wild is very small food particles. They can even absorb organics from the water directly. Only very rarely do they capture a fish. What your anemone is doing in the photo is eating - or at least going through the motions. That is a feeding response.

Wow good luck looks to be coming around. Are you feeding it at all? I purchased a gig about a year and a half ago in similar condition to yours only slightly blue tips but severly bleached. I fed him almost every day Finley cut fish and mysis shrimp with vitamins. It seemed to work in my case. The nem is actually in my avatar. Just my experience every one is different so you never know but good luck. Seems to being to well with whatever you are doing now.

Normally, i dont try and feed the anemone, but with this one i wanted to, at first i had to shut down all the pumps for him to get the food to not blow out of him, now i can just turn my MP10's down a little bit, and he still can hold the food.. i would say i feed him just about every day as of right now, if not every other day... and its just a small piece of food though...not really any bigger than the size my thumbnail chunk of food..

right now i feed him Rods food Predator blend since i had some laying around, but been thinking about switching over to krill, does anyone have any suggestions on what else i should maybe feed it?.. ( im not worried about it getting to big as i want him to get bigger haha.. i think they are gorgeous when they are huge, beautiful creature :D )

So its official, its been 1 month and hasnt deflated once yet.. :) and has regained alot of its color in the past week i think, i know i still got a LONG way to go though... but here's pictures :)

action shot of him eating :D

i try to take a picture with flashes because i feel you can see the most color in his tentacles that way, and as he looks in this picture is pretty muh idently to what u see with your eyes, so i think my camera did a good job :P

funny thing when i fed him today that small chunk of food, the anemone crab reached out from under him and took the piece i had to take it back haha, and kind of shoo the crab away for a bit, was just funny the way his arm came up and reached around and pulled the food haha

Looks great! I'm feeding my new Sebae Nem krill and he's doing good with it in a new tank just like you too. Mine has deflated once, but since I started the feedings he is doing awesome!

How do you get zero glare when using the flash? I haven't even tried with a flash thinking the glare would be horrible!

thought id delight you all with a video ... :) just took it, here you can see the more aggressive side of my MP10's... since the other videos were during the more subtle period, now i know this isnt rediculous crazy flow, and they can handle much more but he seems to enjoy it for now.. :)

And for the flash, idk, i put the lense as close to the glass as i can, sometimes even right on th glass, and my Flash is on that is a pop up flash, not one built onto the fram of the camera, so idk i really have no issue, i only have an issue with flash on the acrylic/glass when i use my phone to take pictures/videos.. which is what ths video was taken with my phone..

im not sure, with the lights on it looks blue, but when lights go off and i view it with a flashlight, or Take a pic with flash, it looks Purple... Im hoping for purple, but will still be satisfied with blue.

Nothing fancy its just a Damsel Fish i got at my LFS to help cycle my tank, i went with it because it was a little more unique than the average blue/black domino damsel..

i cant really find any pictures of it on google for the propper name of it, but the closest one i can find is a "Princess Damsel"... except the one i have isnt so aggressive on the Blue.. mines more all pink and yellow, with a Dot on the back top fin.

he isnt aggressive (right now)...as other damsels, i was gonna use him just to cycle then take him back to the store, but if he remains as calm and respectable as he is, i may just keep him ...

Just doing my weekly set of pictures Update :) 1 month and 1 week in my tank.. :)

Both of these pictures were taken with a flash.. Enjoy :)
