My Maxima pic

This beautiful specimen was bought at last year's MACNA, back in September. I put it in my 29g and held my breath, hoping beyond hope it would be able to live with 110w of PC lighting. Not only has it done so, but it even jumped from the perch at the peak of my LR and got settled on my substrate.

In December, I added an extra 55w PC bulb, to make up for any loss it might suffer, being over 12" away from the light.

This is what it looks like, 5 months later.

And what kind of camera are you using love the picture detail?

This is a HP215, a very basic digital camera that I bought at Office Max last year. It does have a macro setting, and it helps to have a beautiful subject like the above.

I'm actually on the market for something better, but I've really got no clue what type to get.

I am in the process of looking for a new camera, thats why I asked. I have to keep borrowing my sister in laws when I want to take some shots.

I set it on macro, medium picture size, and turn the flash off. The rest is merely positioning it to best capture the subject.

If you find a good deal on something perfect, please let us know. Or me at least.

Nice. You are the exception to the rule (that every rule has) about Maximas needing MH. I will still preach that they need MH, because they do in most tanks but, in the mean time..... NICE CLAM!

I didn't want to break the rules. It was a test and a wish and a hope all rolled into one. I still read many posts about super healthy clams suddenly dying overnight, so I'm cautious, but I sure love it day by day.

Plus I like to make MtnDewMan jealous. LOL

Are you feeding DTs? He will love that too, and I'm sure it will help maintain his health.

I also feed Instant Algae "Coral and Clam Diet" now too...especially for my baby clams. It has 5 species of phyto, where DTs only has one. It's cheaper and more concentrated. (It isn't as "Alive" as DTs is, but is still head and shoulders above dead bottled stuff like Kent Phyto)

Yes, I feed about 1.5 tablespoons of DTs every other day. I'm getting around to growing my own phyto... just about have everything I need to get started. That should help on expenses.

What is the price of your clam & coral diet? Does it need to be refrigerated as well? I need to order Golden Pearls one day as well, because everyone raves about the stuff and I've never even tried it. As far as I can tell it is a powder. I assume you sprinkle in a specific dose per gallon.....

Actually, even the smallest size of GPs are too big for clams. Enough can choke them

The Instant Algae was $22 shipped Airborne to me with cold pack. The tiny little bottle lasts just as long as the largest bottle of DTs. One or 2 drops equals a capful of DTs! It does need to be refrigerated.

Yes, that you do my friend! I wish I had more stuff to take pictures of. Oh, and I wish I had a better camera to take those pictures with. Oh, and I wish ... no, that's it. :thumbsup:

just out of curiosity, how come you went with a chunkier crushed coral substrate??

When I set up this tank, I was using the knowledge I had from when I was 11 years old. Crush Coral, UGF, airstones, pretty background, HOB filter.

And that is what I did for the first 3 years. Then I started making contact with other saltwater enthusiasts via R.A.M.R. newsgroup, and here on RC later on last year.

I pulled out the UGF, later added PC lighting, then in the fall I incorporated my sump/refugium.

If I replace this tank with a new one, I'll get one drilled with more space and a sand substrate. I'm not sure if I'd go with a DSB for a smaller tank, but I wouldn't mind seeing a 1" deep sandbed.

Certainly nothing unhappy about that clam! I'd say that your feeding DTs phytoplankton helps a lot. What a nice pattern and such a wide mantle!

I also have a blue maxima under VHO's in my 120 (four 110 watt, two blue, two super actinic). I've had it a couple of months and it seems to be doing fine. I'm going to change the lights a little more often than recommended however.............
