Myka's 69 SPS Tank 2015

The camera is a Pentax Optio WG-II. The setting was 1cm macro.

Matt, I totally agree with you, but that decapod has a serious case of ADHD! He doesn't sit still long enough.

Scott, I was thinking the same, but sadly the color of the Acro was not captured accurately. So sad. :(

Great shots Mindy. Corals are looking really good. I like the second pic. Seeing the filaments around the polyps is cool

Yeah, I like that one too, but it's too bright - it's blown out on the tips. I didn't even notice the messenterial filaments until I was looking at the photos. Ha! :D The macro is better than MY eyes that's for sure.

Cool thanks, never would think that camera could take those pics by the look and price of it.

The 1 cm macro setting makes all the difference in the world. There is "normal" macro setting, and the 1 cm macro. The 1 cm macro you put the camera 1 cm from the object, and you can zoom right in and it will still focus. It also has a little LED ring around the lens that you can light up instead of using flash if you're in lower light conditions. There are threads around the lens too so you can thread on filters or maybe other lenses?? I haven't really looked into it.

Nice macros

Thank you. The only pics I'm half decent at taking! Ha!

The tank is still struggling a bit. I still have a couple corals that are STN'ing that have been this way for some weeks. Recently, the A desalwii has lost the flesh off the tips for some reason. Interestingly, the frag I have of it from a branch I broke, which is on the sand has also lost the flesh on the tips, though it is a couple days behind in reaction. The desalwii seems to be the only piece affected by whatever it is. Things I changed immediately before this reaction are: I added a fan to the ATI fixture (the ATI fans aren't working) so now the fixture isn't auto-dimming from overheat, so they are getting a lot more light (still only 250 PAR to this piece), I added a bag of carbon to the sump (I removed it now), and I upped the Sodium nitrate dosing from hovering between "0" and 0.5 ppm to 1-2 ppm. The last alk swing was late August where alk went down to 6.3 dKH from it's usual 7.3-7.8 dKH. I hope it doesn't turn into an STN or RTN case, and the tips recover.

I did notice that I've been getting a significant pH swing overnight. Just before lights on the tank sits at 7.9 and at the end of the photoperiod it's at 8.3. Maybe this is the problem. I'm currently dosing kalk every 30 mins 24/7, maybe I'll start dosing cal/alk during the day and kalk at night.

Params over the last month:

Cal 410-415 ppm (Elos)
Alk 7.3-7.8 dKH (Hanna, Salifert)
Mg 1300 ppm (Salifert)
NO3 "0" - 2 ppm (Red Sea, Salifert)
PO4 0-6 ppb (Hanna)

I picked up some Oyster Feast and have started adding 3-5 drops every evening just after lights out. I ordered Acro Power weeks ago, but it hasn't shown up at the LFS yet. I turned the skimmer down awhile back, so it's skimming dry as a popcorn fart.

I'm considering adding Brightwell NeoPhos to help keep a PO4 reading. Does anyone use this product?

I'm having the exact same issue you're having. Two of my corals are STNing, and I've recently added light and had a movement in calcium when I caught up my dosing volumes. I'm also having pH swings, what I had running in the past is an airline tube out the window feeding the skimmer, I believe the pH swings large amounts, unless your tank is near an open window, and this is extremely prevalent in the cold weather.

That's very interesting Eastone. I will get my cal and alk out and start dosing kalk only at night and see if I can help decrease this pH swing. If nothing else, at least it gives me something to tinker with. ;)

Looking great love the macro shots, i like the third photo looks to have more details and vivid colors.

Hey myka, what brand of aquascape epoxy/putty did you use that freaked out some of your sps, and how many corals did you mount with it in what time period when that occured?

I used really old Tunze D-D epoxy and Coralife. I'm not sure which one freaked them out. I epoxied about 10 pieces iirc, I didn't use much, either 2 or 3 half inch balls of epoxy in a 30 min time period.

I forget, did it kill anything? I have the new dd aquascape epoxy and I'm concerned that if I use it I will have problems. Superglue only just doesn't seem like it would be enough.

The DD stuff is good, used it for years, and never had a problem.

Superglue only works just fine.

Me too. Other than it sucks. It's not a problem until it's a problem. I'm pretty sure it was the DD that caused the issue, but it was a new tank with new frags. Lots going on. Brightwell Aquatics is the best epoxy I've used. The Coralife stuff sucks too.

Only works just fine as in its sufficient?

Why are you sure dd was the problem if you used it with coralife?

I've also heard that doing a bunch of frags at the same time, regardless of brand, will cause problems. Also not mixing completely before putting it in the tank.

Sorry to hear of your coral issues, could be that the combo of factors is the cause (low alk, light changes, adding carbon, increased additive dosing). In terms of your pH issues, do you have a fuge area, and if so, is it on a reverse light cycle? I've always worked under the assumption that this minimizes pH swings, but I've never actually measured pH.

I can only speak from experience about the DD epoxy. In the 5+ years I've used it there was never a problem during or after. I've glue frags and colonies, even stuck frags with no plug. I've tried a number of other brands and they simply don't stick. I use the pink one, supposed to stick better than the grey.
