Mysterious fish deaths are more common now (Flukes)

The Prazi in PraziPro is Praziquantel, so they are the same thing ;)

From what your describing, I'd give those fish a FW dip for between 1 and 5 minutes. Then use the prazi to deal with anything remaining.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I realise that Praziquantel is the active ingredient in both, but decided to order Prazipro as it appears to be more user friendly in my situation. The point I was trying to make with regard to the Chloroquine phos., is that it seems to have killed the flukes. Although yesterday they were still anchored to the fish by their hooks, they were actually dead and waving about in the water. Today they have all dropped off, apart from one still on the Blennies body, and the Angels eye is now clear, no longer cloudy. Will probably do another dose of Chloroquine phos, then use the Prazipro when it arrives(estimated Dec 11-17). Has anyone else seen the demise of flukes when using Chloroquine phos?

Interesting results with the choroquine. I love the stuff for protozoans like amyloodinium, but have never tried it on flukes. It is known to be hard on inverts, so I'm not really surprised that it might kill of some of the flukes.

Some is the correct word. Can see one or two still on the Angels eye. Easy to spot when you know what your looking for, pleased I came across this thread anyway. Will just have to be patient and await the arrival of the PraziPro.

Bill, do you know if I can run Chloroquine and Prazipro in tandem? Or am I going to have to remove the Chloroquine using carbon and water changes, before the introduction of PraziPro?

I've never used chloroquine in conjunction with any other meds, and haven't come across any references of it being done either. So I'd recommend playing it safe and doing a big water change and running some carbon to clear it out before starting the prazi.

Hi All, not sure if its mentioned already, I am going to read all 25 pages 2moro at work, lol

but, can I use Prazi Pro in my main display tank?

it states that it will kill the worms, so in that case, I can always vacuum clean the sand and the worms will come out

I don't have any SPS, only like 3 or 4 LPS and few snails and no shrimps.

I wanted to take all my fish, but its hard with some small fish, please advice

thanks

Pran

I have dosed Prazi into my display tank on 3 occasions, without any ill effects that I could see. I have plenty of worms left in my sandbed, if any died I couldn't see them. I did notice some loss of hitchhiker feather dusters, but I expected this as the label warns that Prazi may kill feather dusters.

I should note that when I did dose I didn't have any corals that I would consider to be delicate. The corals I had at the time were unaffected by the dosing, as far as I could tell.

I've also used Prazi in my quarantine tank multiple times. I've never seen any evidence at all of it harming beneficial bacteria, which would be indicated by an ammonia spike.

ALL of my new fish go through quarantine, and they all receive a 2-dose treatment of Prazi, whether they're symptomatic or not.

I've never FW dipped any of my fish so I can't really say for certain. I do know that it seems to take a couple of days for Prazi to provide relief for an infected fish. So, a dip might help a fish that you think is badly infected.

Maybe someone with experience with FW dips could answer? Billsreef?

I'm a firm believer in FW dips for flukes. Even the fish will only stand a 1 minute dip, a great deal of flukes will drop off in that minute. A 5 to 10 minute dip will remove most, if not all flukes attached the fish. A FW dip is part of my protocol for all new fish, right out of the bag before they go into a tank.

Bill, please see this video of my emp angel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCPxpqxaxow&feature=g-upl

it has been acting like this for 3 days, and eyes are little cloudy

I am going to buy Prazi Pro today and dose my tank

Do you think doing a FW dip may stress the fish more, doesn't it look stressed already?

also why is it acting like that

so in FW

do I need to match the PH too, or temp is fine

and can I do it from fresh RO water from the ro/di system with same temp, or do I need to let it settle for 24 hours?

thanks
Pran

Thanks Bill and Yogre

Bill, I did a FW dip on my personifier for 1 min from big als fresh water tank's water, and after it looked better, and it was swiming last night fine but I dont see it this morning, maybe its sleeping

I also put 1/2 dose of prazi pro and will put another 1/2 dose of prazi pro

if the personifier is doing better today

I will FW dip both personifer and emp for 2 mins

thx
Pran

Hi Pran,

I just watched the video, the emperor angel is looking very stressed.

Using FW from FW fish tank works well, it's how I did when I was running LFS fish rooms. Already aged, good temp, and close enough in pH in most cases.

yes true Bill, thanks

I didn't FW dip my emperor yesterday, b/c my Personifier was looking worst and emp ate, so I thought let me try personifier first and if everything is good today then try emp today.

hmm, I didn't see the personifer this morning, maybe its sleeping

but after giving the FW dip to the personifier, it started swimming after 30 mins and was looking good for 90 mins, then was at the top right side of the tank, but the body and eyes looked clear than before.

So if it was dead now, maybe it did b/c it was sick and not FW dip caused it.

Reason being, if the FW dip failed, then it would have died right away right? and not swim normal after.

I will be home in 5 hrs, and I hope its alive.

However, It ate fine and swam fine on Monday, and I heard with fluke it will do that and then will stop eating and after 3-4 days it may die, so is it possible for it to die within 1 day?

Thanks
Pran

Depends on how bad off the personifier was. If it was worse than the emperor, and emperor looked pretty bad, it could have been past the point of no return already. Hope you come home to see it swimming around.

Thanks Bill,

I lost the personifer and the 2nd blue line too, so now both blue lines are gone.

pretty sad day, but the personifer was a nice guy, b/c he didnt hide inside the rock for me, so it was easy to take him out.

I dipped it in fresh water, but didnt see any fluke, but like u said, fluke would have left him after he was done.

My crab took care of the blue line.

I put the other 1/2 dose of prazi in last night, will see what happens.

this what I hate about this hobby ...I was soo happy last week with having, two CB blue line angels, personifer, scribble, emp all eating well then this

life sucks

thx guys
Pran

Really sorry to hear of your losses.

Like you, the one thing I don't like about this hobby is the fact that when something goes wrong, sometimes an animal dies. :-(

Thank you,

I dosed the other 1/2 of prazi on wed night, emp looking a little better

will see what happens

thx
