i might have flukes

the clowns eyes are really cloudy still i notice some very small items floating around in the water during the dip (dips where about 10 mins each time)
do u guys think i have flukes or something else?
thanks
joe

well the other clown passed today, eyes where still very cloudy
very sad that i lost all my fish in a week
think i should order prazipro and dose the tank anyway for atleast one treatment?

Hi All

my 2nd treatment of Prazi Pro is finishing on sunday.
so what do I do after,

do a 40% water change?
run carbon?

after how many hours/days can I start my UV sterlizer

thx
Pran

Per hikari, as soon as you want to remove the PraziPro from the system. It will destroy the active ingredient, when I inquired the recommended procedure for removing PraziPro they said a UV sterilizer. This is how I remove it from my QT system.

if it was not flukes and idea what it could of been?

Sorry I missed this. Sounds like secondary infection. It's not unusual for bacterial infections to take hold from the damage done by flukes or other parasites. In such cases, it pays to cotreat with antibiotics.

Yup, water change, carbon and go ahead and put the UV on ;)

I can hook up the UV right away?

thx

Correct. It will break down the prazi, that's the reason you don't want it running during treatment.

Joe,

If you haven't already dosed the tank with Prazi, I would go ahead and treat. Get rid of any flukes before they become a real problem for any other fish. It also pays to do the two treatments in case any of the fluke species in the tank are from one of the egg laying families.

Just a stupid question but why bother removing it from the QT tank? Is this something that can just be used on all fish as a precautionary measure?

I use a double treatment of Prazi on all new fish. Flukes are hard to spot, treating all new fish ensures they don't get past me into my display.

I like to run carbon after treatment in my QT to remove any residual Prazi and degradation products. Helps me start with a "clean slate" if you will.

i was wondering since im fishless right now

If your fishless now, you could go with letting the tank remain fishless for 6 to 8 weeks. That will get past the possibility of any flukes, ick, or other dedicated fish parasite surviving. While going through that, set up a proper quarantine tank (QT) and run all new fish through QT for 6 to 8 weeks. By the time you've set up that QT, and run those first new fish through it, the display tank will be ready. Then you can run a display tank without the need to deal with treating sick fish in it ;)

Don't know if anyone is still following this thread? Came upon this last night and spent a few hours reading the whole thing. I have a heavily stocked 120 gal. reef. Over the past few years I've noticed my hippo tang and royal gramma scratching on occassion. I never saw any spots so I never gave it much thought. Now those same 2 fish start scratching non stop starting around midday until the lights go out. One of the tangs eyes seem cloudy. I now also see about half the other fish starting to scratch. All fish are eating well and are active. Been soaking food with garlic. I have prazi pro ready but am still hestitant to dose the tank. I am not even 100% sure flukes are the culprit. The tank is a mix of sps, lps, softies and a wide array of inverts that I would hate to stress and lose. I am encouraged by reading about the people in this thread who did dose with Prazi successfully, but there were a few where it didn't go so well. Breaking the tank down and catching the fish is not an option at this point. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest starting a new thread since no one is really gonna see this post here. All I know about flukes is what I just read here, but I would say your options are:

1. break down the tank and remove all the fish for treatment

2. treat prazipro and hope for the best, removing any ornamental worms you want to keep.

3. let everything die and start over.

Are there any signs of ich or similar parasite eg white dots or spots

I am not even 100% sure flukes are the culprit.

Flukes are still out there. Just Freshwater dipped a Moorish Idol and Regal Angels before putting them in a quarantine tank and saw a few flukes drop off.

I'm not sure if your fish that are constantly scratching has flukes or not. I strongly suspect your fish has ich instead. You can always catch any of the suspected fish and FW dip the fish for 5 minutes and see if any flukes fall off. Throughout the years I have yet to see a Yellow tang or any tangs I've kept ever have flukes. Its possible that tangs can get flukes but rare in my experience.
