New obsession, a little slice of the rain forest

steve did you buy all that stuff from AC?...the substrate/background/etc.....or were they random outdoor wood?...

i have a broken 55 gallon that i want to turn into one of these things...and the cheaper i can spend, the better

thanks. I had to lower the water just a tad bit to allow drainage from the soil. That's the whol point of using the clay pebbles under the soil. It still looks great and there is still plenty of water for the pond.

John, I actually ordered everything online. I ordered it just because I didn't think AC carried everything I needed. But, I noticed AC does carry the hydroballs, coco bedding, and mopani wood, etc. They even have a nicer tree background than what I got and I think it's only a few dollars more. I do really like the plants and accessories that came with the kit I ordered though.

It's up to you, just search blackjungle.com and see what all you need then check around.

I've got almost a full bucket of the coco bedding. I wasn't thinkin' and through the whole brick in the bucket of water and it was enough for a 30 gallon tank. But that's less than $5 though so no big deal on that.

What would you say it would cost overall to do like a 29g bowfront or similar? Maybe $400 or so with water effects and using a used tank? Maybe less?

I get the feeling some of the critters will be what really sets you back some. :)

really, the dart frogs at AC are $75-$225. I'm happy with the $20 reed frogs.

I have roughly $145 in this setup. If you wanna go the route with the water falls, I would seriously have the guy at AC build you the background. He went over it with me today, but I'm still a little lost on it. It looks so much nice with cork bark and foam background. You might can even talk to him and he can better explain it to you. As far as settin' up the substrate and planting plants, it's no problem.

I still think if I was working with a 29 gal or larger tank, I could do the waterfall. I just ran out of space.

I have not done enough research on our lavendar corn snake we have to know but do they like enviroments like this ? Would love to some something like this in our 40g breader she is in now to make it more os a show piece.

I don't think this would be good for a corn snake. Maybe too much humidity? I could be wrong. Another downside would be cleaning. A snake is gonna have a lot more mess (poop, pee) than frogs. These setups for frogs are suppose to be easy to maintain as the live plants help alot. I think it would be different for a snake.

You could still fix a nice setup for your snake. I have tried in the past but it's just more to clean. My corn snakes poop on everything. Now, all they get is 2 hide boxes and a water bowl. It's much easier to maintain then havin' to pull a bunch of decorations out to clean...

Yah everything I have found is they dont like a lot of humidity. "She" is a Lavendar CS and about 4' 1/2 feet long and in fact been thinking of making a larger home for her to strech out as right now she can wrap from the side across the front and down the other side and it is a large 40g breeder. Guess I am just a water junkie wishing i could do something like this with the snake.

Oh well , looks like I will just have to get some frogs =-P

("she" is only called that as it is my daughters snake and she says it is a she lol )

Way to go John, You will really enjoy it. I just got another tree frog, red eyes and a lot of blue down his side & of course the orange feet..:)...real pretty.

John, if your usin' the mopani wood, I would soak it for about a week, changin' the water everyday. That's if it's gonna be in the water. If not, your water will look like tea.

I had alot of left overs...bedding, hydroton, and some extra mopani wood so I'm thinkin' about makin' another. Might try one of those exo terra (open front) terrariums. I might try the cork bark and foam background...

I don't think it's really a issue for a terrarium. I read the only effects is the tea color water and it lowers PH...so might be a issue in a fish aquarium.

Lut us know how it goes and post pictures. I know a 55 is gonna be much nicer than a 10 gal. About like a reef tank, bigger is better...

I have been watching this thread and then reading up on the Dart Frog stuff and I have an extra stripped down 12 Gallon nano that I am going to try this on. I will of course be reading up a little more before though. But I went by the Critter today and they have a 12 gallon up front that they just finished and its SWEET.... loved it.

Ohh my bad, its the same one... LOL
Sorry. But I love that thing. 12 Gall can hold what? 2-3 frogs? I gotta work on the hood a bit but I think I can do it. Just gotta do some more reading up.

Im in the club!!! Went by emerald bay today and they had a little 2.5 gallon with live plants and a little frog that I got. Thinking of setting up an old 20 gallon I found in all my junk to house some more.
