New ORA Release: Blue Iris Acro

I just added the blue iris acropora to my tank. I am disappointed that it has not encrusted at all, definitely a fresh cut frag. I am not sure if this or normal for new releases or not.

This did not bother me too much because it is a very nice looking piece. The pictures that I have seen online are somewhat deceiving. The pigments are significantly darker than I expected! The color is very dark and rich.

When it has adjusted I will get some macro shots (a week from now maybe).

Umm, I feel like I got the wrong coral, it is really nice, though!

Logzor,

That looks like ORA's True Blue Oregon Tort, maybe you did receive the wrong one.

It is not the Oregon Tort, it was actually sitting right next to one and looks totally different.

This "blue iris" has the green highlights in the base, just like the other pictures online, but the overall color is much darker.

That is not a blue iris. The coralites and polyp form are completely different. It looks like the Ora blue tort (not the Oregon tort) the regular blue tort has a greenish base.

I do not think it is that either, I have large blue tort (cali tort) colony in my tank.

How can I get to the bottom of this?

Edit: Here is another photo I found online, the half extended coralites do look similar, also, carefully look at the parallel pattern running up and down the stalks in both pictures. This is not characteristic of acropora tortusa.

I am more confident now, but still, it look so different.

Yes, I ordered it from our sponsor.

They could only order one of these and one of the oregon torts, the cali tort was not available. I picked out this one, which was sitting next to a frag of the oregon tort.

The blue tort was not available and the oregon tort was sitting right next to my frag.

Regardless, after some searching I am confident it is the blue iris. The fact that the frag has not encrusted at all suggests it is a new release.

I will double check with our sponsor, though.

Good luck with that. Why even post for advise if you don't take the advise of two different people? Hope you prove us wrong.

People make mistakes sometimes. I ordered a purple nana from LiveAquaria once and was sent a verde. They stood by their claims of it being a nana. I ordered another purple nana from them when they had one and it wasn't until I posted a picture of both of them beside each other that they admitted I was sent the wrong coral. I don't know if it was labeled wrong when sent to them or someone made a mistake at their holding facility. Either way mistakes happen. You can see the photos I posted when I got the first frag LA put up. It wasn't encrusted either and looks nothing like the coral you posted.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I was not sure how often this happened. I just PM'd our sponsor asking about this scenario.

No one's trying to bust your balls or anything. Compare your picture to the ORA colony photo. Imagine if you took a little piece off that. Color aside, the growth structure isn't even similar regardless if it's encrusted. I could be wrong but I can't see any similarities.

"It's not a Blue Iris because it looks like a Blue Tort"

Why submit to something so un-scientific and off the top of your head?

I do not mean to insult you but I need to find something more concrete than quick picture comparisons.

StephenInVa knows what he is taking about. I stated somehting for you to look into:
"The coralites and polyp form are completely different"

There are plenty of places to compare pictures... take a look. I would recommend oracorals.com

We could be mistaken... but the polyps and growth on that frag don't resemble the Iris. Do you have a pic with not so much blue light? That may help as well.

Ah, man you got me before I edited that post. I did not want to seem harsh because I appreciate your advice.

Maybe your right, though. I'll look into it more.
