New ORA Release: Blue Iris Acro

Nope, it's fully encrusted and wrapping around the plug. For the ORA plugs I take my dremel and cut off the plastic stem so I have a nice flat surface to epoxy the frag. That way, I don't have to break the frag off the plug and lose the existing encrusting. In a few months, it's fully encrusted over the plug and onto the rockwork and you never know it's there.

I chalk up the PE to the Vortech :)

Couple shots of mine.

IMO this the nicest ORA acro released this year, the fact that I don't yet own a frag is a pity! Nice pics everyone...

It's been a while since there was a post. How about a growth pic with my new dSLR :) Still shopping for a macro lens though.

Looking good Eric! I use a 90mm Tamron...excellent lens for the price.

My Blue Iris is finally encrusting, hopefully it will get some real growth soon.

Really nice growth and nice piece! I think I'm gonna have to stop over at my LFS and see if they have any in yet? They always have low prices on ORA stuff, they never gouge!~

Anyone have any new pics? Should be getting a little size to them now...

Well, so far so good with mine but I haven't had it that long. It's encrusting nicely on the plug but other than that nothing too noteworthy.

It is definitely a nice piece though and I'm glad I got it! It's going to be interesting watching it grow into a nice size colony!~

IMO it looks nothing like the IF Echinata. I have a 6"+ colony of the IF and have seen the Iris. Echinata is smaller and mor delicate imo.

Woo Hoo!!!!! I like this part almost best personally, it's like having the real thing... sorta. :hmm2:

StephenInVa knows what he is taking about. I stated somehting for you to look into:
"The coralites and polyp form are completely different"

There are plenty of places to compare pictures... take a look. I would recommend oracorals.com

We could be mistaken... but the polyps and growth on that frag don't resemble the Iris. Do you have a pic with not so much blue light? That may help as well.

Please don't take me the wrong way, but as we all know, polyps and growth can be affected by many different environmental factors. Corallite structure cannot be seen on a live coral, except for cues from the flesh on it. Branch thickness, growth pattern, etc. vary wildly based on conditions. A lot of these threads have arguments over species names when even ORA shies away from it.

I basically just rephrased the above from numerous articles/books on corals, I can cite sources if necessary.

Whoa! You received a huge piece to begin with. Check a few pages back, the piece I started with was literally like 1/3 of yours.

Yours is looking very nice, though.

I am really beginning to like this coral, the color of the skin is incredibly deep, which doesn't seem to translate in the pictures.

How are everyone's frags coming along? Thinking of purchasing a frag but wanted to check to see how folks are doing with the coral.

I had one for 6 months and lost it in a tank crash of stn rtn type of deal. I have my lfs ordering me another whenever he orders from ora. The frag first frag I got was as large as the ones in the growth shots above. Hope I get lucky again. One thing I must say is that mine was darker then these pics at the base it was more green with just a hint of tan-yellow and blue tips. what lighting are you guys using?
