New Reef Octupus Skimmer Thread (Pacific Coast Imports)

I have seen these and IMO they need some redesign. The cup being a true union sucks. The drain outlet for the cups make it hard to get off and on . To get it on you have to hover the cup while you spin the union. Standard ball valve on output . The inside ring is higher than the neck of the skimmer allow waste back into the skimmer if overfull.

It lost me with the cup removal and union . I don't like my er unions and don't like theres but er's old ones are better than these .

I would love to se the PCRPS-3000 in action. In theory it should be as good as any skimmer on the market. Sure in may not have a nice neck fitting but its average design, not bad design. As far as the pump goes, I would say it is wait and see on the quality. I wouldnt say its below average quality just because its inexpensive.

If I were setting up a nice 110 gallon setup and had a real world budget this would be my top choice.

Okay... Help me understand the differences between the two...

Octopus Needlewheel 200 protein skimmer - 25" height - 7.8" Diameter - 475 gph pump - $189.99

Pacific Coast needle wheel skimmer - 23" height - 7.8" diameter - 750 gph pump - $239.99

They look almost identical in body design. Same diameter body. The only real difference is the pump and 2" of height. Wouldn't the cheaper one with additional height be a btter buy especially if I was going to recirc mod it similar to an ASM and had a Gen-X 2400 needlwheel pump to swap if I wanted more flow?

The better one if you are gong to modify is the one with the bigger chamber. Think twice about a bigger needlwheel since you can end up with too much turbulance in the chamber.

i have a reef octopus HOB and it works just great. pulling out funky, viscous DARK skimmate. gross. i'd recommend it.

I will get the 8" chamber 24' high recirculating skimmer on friday. I just dont want this thread to die because of a few others, if it wasn't for this thread start I would not have found this skimmer and I feel we need to know if it's worth it or not. I cant speak for the rest of you but it's in my price range (barely) and we all know after this kind of skimmer what comes next takes it to the next level of "ya right" whatever.
The only problem is that I need a tank with a large population in it order to see if I can make this thing puke or not. Because it's going into my prop tank and there is not much in there, 100gal with 20 frags or so. If I find a sucker, I mean larger tank, who wants to push the limits with this thing I will go for that as well.

I'm afraid I'm somewhat new to skimmers and am a little embarassed to say I would appreciate a little hand holding on a fwe of these comments.

Reguarding the inside ring, that shouldn't be be an issue if we use the drain?

Perhpase one more question on that subject, exactly how bad is it for your livestock to have a skimmer overfill and allow waste back in?

Finally, probably the least importent, your saying they use a ball valve for the output, I've heard people say they prefer gate valves to ball vales but in this inscance, what kind of effect would this difference have in the case if a skimmer's output? Would you expect it to be that much easier to adjust the thing?

A gate valve typically provides finer tolerances in adjusting the skimmer performance. Outside of the pump, the other two performance tuners are the bubbles/air intake and the level of the water inside the 'barrel' of the skimmer. These two tuning points are directly linked.

The gate valve is used to adjust the outflow of water from the skimmer and hence the level of the water inside the barrel.

Fine adjustment of outflow using a ball valve is difficult as it tends to be first 'sticky' and secondly the increments of adjustment are too great.

It's like trying to tune TV reception without the 'fine' tuning knob.

I'm keen to hear more about the performance and quality of these skimmers ... so let's hear about them, folks :-)

Their website claims that they have collaborated with USA sources to get the skimmers right ... should be ok to skim then?

We are currently using a couple of these models in our shop However There is one flaw in this design i would like to point out and we have spoken with Pacific Coast (PCI) about it so it might be changed in future designs. The air inlet for the NW pump is mostly blocked, not allowing the air intake to be completely utilized. The air hole is drilled through the union fitting before the intake of the NW pump. Instead of drilling the hole for the air intake all the way thru the union fitting in a straight line, it is drilled halfway through then takes a 90 degree turn and proceeds to the end of the union fitting (where the two pieces of the union fit together and the gasket goes) so the air is injected into the intake of the pump, right where the two unions join, the o-ring partially covers this hole and in order for us to get the model we use in the shop to work. we have to blow into the air intake in order to jump start the pump. It would circulate water fine but not pull any air into it unless we first blew into the intake in order to jump start it. Every unit we have received has had the same design and when putting it together (they dont come setup with all the gaskets and pump in place) we have seen the same thing on all of them, the air intake hole is placed in the same place and the gasket for the union covers it up about 80%, however still given that we are still happy with the performance of the skimmer so far. It seems to form some very nice dense bubble mixture in the reaction chamber and produces a thick smelly very dark skimmate, the unioned collection cup makes it easy to remove and clean. Anyone else using these skimmer please share your experiences with it.

Thanks !

Aren't you guys glad this thread is around for such good info?!

So keep em coming! I know those that love new toys must've gotten this already!

What is their website? that link from the original thread doesn't seem to work anymore

Which website? The maker, the dealers, or the other?

I was too commercial for stating i worked at a shop, and i gave a url to the shop to prove that its a legitimate business and not someone just posting to post. Sorry for being commercial i will not post again.
