New Reef Octupus Skimmer Thread (Pacific Coast Imports)

55kfog, the skimmer is on my 50gal bb sps with a 15gal sump. I am just setting the tank up, so this is the first skimmer on the tank. I am using a CSS 220 on my 140 FOWLR. The 1000 is great quality and I would hate to compare it to the CSS. I will be getting a 2000 for my 140.

Whats the deal here, I'm very confused. Why all the fuss over the RS2000?

It seems to me like the 3000 non recirculating one would outskim it by quite a bit, and is $50 cheaper. Is it being external really that important? I also think a 3000 with an ASM recirc mod would absolutely destroy the 2000 recirc, and still be cheaper...so why all the 2000 love?

just curious here. I know I come off very confrontational at times.

Saving $50, to me, is not worth the torment trying to fool with the metric conversion, buying holesaws, drills and the like.

for some people though, it may be an option.

And we'd like to hear about it!

To each there own.

Cheers
Daniel

Can anybody tell me what the diameter is of the cup neck on the RPS 2000? I think its time for me to retire my CSS 220.

Awe Deuce your the one that sold me on my CSS125 in the first place.

I can't speak on the 2000 but I will return the favor and say they are worth the upgrade. If you got the room go with the 3000 it's a monster.

OK, I made a decision and I ordered an Octopus NW-150 which is a needle wheel skimmer. However, it's 6" in diameter like the RPS-2000. The 2000 is 26" tall and the NW-150 is 23" tall. I'm going to run it as is for a while and see how I like it. Then, I may buy one of the recirc kits with the gate valve from ASM. If I wreck it, I'll only be out $125 plus $39 for the kit. It'll be an experiment for the common good of the hobby.

Its not just the money. You're looking at a 6.5" skimmer vs a 8" skimmer, and a OR 3700 vs an OR 2700.

The r2000 is rated for 300g, the 2000is only rated for 180 gallons. Why pay more for a skimmer that isnt as effective?

Hehe! Not sure if I want to put a 3000 on a 90. Maybe be a bit much. Still toying with the idea.

bought a 2000 rec. for my FOWLR and it is doing a great job. I also put a gate valve in instead of the ball valve. This does a great job

Well, what can I say. Nothing wrong with my CSS. But this PCI skimmer has 2 features that I like. One is the tapered neck and second, it seems to have a bigger neck in the cup(I think). Just like everything else in this hobby, as time goes on, you start learning a bit more. Reviews on this skimmer has been good so far for me to at least think about it. I still cant justify dumping a boatload of money on a well known skimmer. I could have easily moded a used ASM to a recirc, but I need an external skimmer. Ill give it a couple of weeks more to think about it and decide if I should say goodbye to the CSS thread.

As someone that has owned both brand I can say the PCI is far more stable than the coralifes. Even with the CSS output mod the PCI is far more stable.

As far as comparing it to my MRC MR-1 the PCI more stable and pulls far darker skim. When I have the PCI set to skim wet it still produces as dark skim as what I would consider dry skim on the beckett. Same volume better quality skim. That and it uses half the wattage of the beckett.

Hey guys, I ordered the Octopus NW 150 on 3/1 and it shipped the following day via FedEx 2-day. The vendor is new and hasn't started to promote his site. However, I'm happy with the turnaround time. As I said earlier, I'll try it for a while as a needle wheel and then I may convert it to a recirc skimmer. I'll try to get some pics once I get it installed. I got it from marinesolutionsinc.com

Not so much as an issue that impacts performance as the skimmers run very well as they are. We're been trying to max-out the performance by switching in alternative needle-wheels, pumps and the like. Easiest to just attach a 500 - 600 L/hr airpump to the venturi as i have done to my recirc 3000 and it really flies.

Tone :)

As long it is pretty much plug and play, Im all for it. I am to a point were I just want to enjoy looking at my reef tank without tinkering with the equiptment too much to make it work better. I do not really need a new skimmer, but it wouldnt hurt to upgrade it to a better one.

Well, after the initial tweaking of feed rate / water level, it just does it's thing. It was a little bumpy for me at first, but after I got it tuned and it broke in, I'm very satisfied.

I can handle some tweaking and trying to find the sweetspot. You pretty much have to do that to all skimmers regardless of brand. nebraskareef, did you have to do any modifications on your skimmer? Thanks.
