Oceanic Tech Build for under a G!

Right! We were on our way back from Batavia picking up the tank at Petmart. Stopped into CF. I was like $60 :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:
Does it work??? Hey Bri (LFS_Worker), plug this in! He said it came off of the 180 upstairs on the left. "I'LL TAKE IT!!!"

i loved mine, good deal with the pods, i'd try to do some macro in the tank as well. they really like to hunt . a pod of multibands hunting together would be cool. the seahorse kids get cranky when u mix species, but they seem to get along ok. your tank gives u a lot of options.

Yeah, I'm going to focus more on soft corals with only 2 pipes at first. See if I can get them taking frozen. I'm running 2 refugiums for max pod production. Even with no macro in the HOB fuge, I'm getting pods and other creepy crawlies.

sounds good. very cool when pipes swim together. the multibands act like mandarins. waiting until your tank is crawling w /pods is smart. i think u get a big nasty pod bloom going and your golden. i know cf sells live pods.coral frenzy also seemed to work well for me

How many do you think I can go with. 2-3-4? Not sure how they'd do in more than a pair. Do they run in groups, pairs, individuals?

Thanks

I'd like to be able to supplement them with frozen, but that means I'll have to learn how to grow brine shrimp. Otherwise, yeah, I'm hoping it will be a pretty self sustaining system. Trying to keep fish to a minimum. I envision a Gorg forest, zoo garden, and Acan area. Got my eye on a couple of Scoly's for the center part as feature corals.

Really hope I have enough light. I love how low energy the T5's are, but no halide "shimmer". If I gotta switch to halides I gotta.

heres an idea. y not use some of those current-usa powerbrite LED fixtures for the shimmer?

cant wait to see this tank fully stocked!

Yeah, I've been thinking of adding them for moon lights. I could just leave em on 24/7. I like where your head is at! Great Idea!

in your tank i think u could get away with a dozen easy. the bioload of pipes seems really small. my pipes would swim together in the morning then kinda do their own thing for a while. i think your better off doing pairs or larger groups. i've read that males can fight in smaller groups. i don't remember seeing a tank that was set up for pipes primarily. iknow pipes really don't have a realfuctioning stomach so they forage constantly. providing enough food would be your biggest factor on stocking capacity. the multibands seem kinda clumsy. they stick their heads everywhere, they don't pay attention where their tails end up. mine would bump corals by accident and get stung. guess they dont have scales for protection. if u put something that can sting pipes in that tank, it's a matter of time before they get into it.

New Pipes are HERE!!!!!

they look good, hatching bbs shrimp is easy, i just use a 40 oz malt liquor bottle. fill it with old tank water and leave it on the porch for a day or two.

nope, i did at first, seems to work better this way. the hardest part is drinking the beer. i use a clear bottle. i try and use fresh hatched under 4 hrs old or i put some dt phloplakton and leave them for a while. shrimp don't eat for about 12 hrs. when they hatch bbs have a high fat % or i give them time to eat phylo and the protein % inceases.

Well the seahorse and pipefish thing fell by the way side. Now it's a zoo tank with a couple of baby false percs, a clown gobie, watchman, yasha, pistol, and a LM blenny.

I swapped out the 4x39 watt Tek for a crappy Odyssea 250w DE MH. I'm actually expecting my new ballast today. Once I get that, I've got a brand spankin new Hamilton 14K just itching to get put in. The old ballast and bulb is really yellow. Here's ONE pic with the halide on. The rest are actinic cheater shots.
