Updated Pics

Here are some pics of todays work. I changed out the plumbing completely. My check valve had a leak, and the design caused the return hose to bend cutting the flow. Also there was not enough room for my water-change idea.

Gotta clean up the wires.

Nice set-up. I'm curious as to why you don't put your heater on the RKII? I've heard of quite a few tank crashes lately due to faulty heater controllers.

my heater is on my Rk2. I have the Aqua Medic plugged into the RK2, the RK2 is set to shut the heater off if it the temp breaks 84.
The Aqua Medic is set to shut off at 80, should be moderately safe.

Ok, my fault. Have you given thought to more than one heater as a fail safe? I'll probably be using three 250W heaters rather than one or two higher watt heaters in case of a malfunction. It should help in preventing my tank from cooking or freezing.

I don't want to jinx myself, but I've been in the hobby 10+ years, always used one heater, and never had one fail on me. I've heard stories before, but that's not my experience. One quality heater has always worked fine for me.

Hey, looking good so far. I only got so far as to plumb in my RO system this weekend. I need 36 hours in a day, 4 day weekend and 10 day week!!!
Are you going to keep the flex hose for the overflow? I have the same one I think, it's way too long, it'll work, but it bugs me.
I like the silent overflow idea. I was thinking of the herbie method, but if this one works it will prevent me having to run hose aroung the back :)

Is that a filter sock in your sump? I read you're not supposed to use them as they filter out all the plankton or something.

So what functions are you using of the reefkeeper? You like your Vortec eh? Just eggcrate for a shallow sandbed too?

yea, I might add a 150w where the and program it to keep the switch off, unless it goes below 75. That way it can maintainthe temp until I notice it.

dsn112,

Why the eggcrate on the bottom? Is this a bare-bottom tank?

Joe

No, it was reccomended to help distribute the weight of the rock and not have it directly on the glass. Do you think its stupid? It makes sense to me since rock can be jagged and sharp. You can do this with sand too, but then the rock wont be as stable as if you put it down first.

MD, Filtersocks are bad if you don't change them out weekly. If I dont use one what else can I use? and how do I attach the drain to the sump? People love or hate them. Im undecided still on using them too, but this guy I met who has no algae issues and no phosphate readings and has never used a phosban reactor said the key is a 25 micron filter sock, because it traps everything. So I dunno. Reefkeepr is only monitoring temp and PH, and controlling the temp right now. I will set it for lighting and everything else once I need to, but for now, its fine.

I would not use eggcrate for a dsb, or even an ssb. This will severely hinder your sandbed fauna from doing their work. They need to work through the sand unhindered by a grid. I don't know why you would have eggcrate on the bottom of a dsb anyway. It won't stabilize the rockwork. On my bb tank, I used eggcrate supported by pieces of 1/2 inch pvc pipe zip-tied to the eggcrate. This holds the platform above the bottom of the tank, so detritus is kept moving and eventually finds its' way into the overflow and filter sock. The bottom of your tank will not be affected if you place rock directly on it (or your sandbed).

Interesting? Do yo reccomend putting the sand down first, or the rock?

I remember Dr. Shimek answering this same question many years ago. He said, "It doesn't matter a wit!" Your sandbed critters need unhindered access to your bed.

They only thing I can think of is that if I put the rock ontop of the sand it wont be as sturdy, maybe Im being rediculous. It would be much easier to put the sand in now and the rock ontop of it.

I have had my 29 gallon running for over ten years without a rockslide.:D The rocks are just sitting on top of the sand.

These guys (www.garf.org) recommend an eggcrate bottom with extra piping to create a denitrifying zone. Seems to work for them, check it out.

In my last tank I had a 4inch dsb and I used larger crushed coral for the first 1/2 to 1 inch layer. I had no problems with my rock on top of that.
I've since read that it's not so good to use the coral and to just use sand, so that's what I plan to do. I hate the look of a BB tank, so I'm going with a DSB. The rock will likely sink somewhat but it won't be a problem.

Denitrifying zones aren't enhanced by having eggcrate buried in the sandbed.

Well, I've never tried the GARF method, so I wouldn't know, but it seems that it's been working well for them for years. As I said, I used crushed coral as a base layer before much along the same lines, but I've since read that just having sand is better, as long as it's the right sand.

I've never had a rock slide or any problems with rock sinking into my sand either and my tanks been up for 3 or 4 years.

Sorry to hijack but, does anyone here know if the side glass of a Oceanic 75 gallon tank is tempered or not. I NEED to drill my sump for an external pump for my skimmer. Thanks!

The bottoms are non-tempered. It states nothing about the sides on their website...
