Octopus "Extreeme" Skimmer Line

No I was planning on getting the 150 dnw then I saw this thread in the Beginning. So I waited for the results. I think one is internal and one is external. Now there is three to pick from. ?????????????

Well, I have been in touch with a person that is in touch with a "premium" store around Indy, the SWC model is the way to go I hear...or if not that, the PS model. I would like to get this SWC model as it sounds like the premium thing to get, however, I can not find it for sale anywhere!!! Waiting for a phone call now, will post what I hear!

I got a message regarding the skimmer this morning from Phishy Business:

I am going to be sending out a revised directional volute in about a week. The
new volute will be milled out of solid acrylic stock and also have a union to
allow the consumer to remove the pump. The only thing the customer will need to
do is glue the pipe on the chamber to the union with PVC glue.

Sounds like they are getting rid of the diy looking volute after all!

Hi,

The new volute is for the Octopus PRO that has just been released. We are getting the a batch of the models in 2-3 days. They had some complaints on the volute and are remaking it. So anyone that wants to get the Octopus PRO before the change is made, we will ship a new Volute to no charge when it comes out. We wanted to go ahead and get the skimmers in here, they still work very well

For those of you who are debating on regular Octopus skimmers, extremes, SWC's etc. The new Octopus NW & DNW's are due out in about 3-4 weeks. They claim they will have about 30-50% more air intake as the previous models.

Well, after many phone calls, tired fingers (from typing :)) and advice from many, I settled on a skimmer. I bought, and pick up TOMORROW AM!!!!!! the ASM-G1X. The footprint and obviously quality had a lot to do with my decision. I was really looking at getting the G2, but the footprint was a little too big! So, I think I am going to be happy with this! Atleast I sure hope so...lol...or should I say that jason better hopoe I am happy...
just kidding jason!
See you tomorrow am (jason)

I've got a year old NW200. Is the new NW200 totally redesigned, or a pump upgrade?

Jason, can you please update us when you know if the plumbing into the actual skimmer was upsized or just the output on the pump? Might be interested in picking up a new pump when there available if it will connect up to the older model skimmer. Thanks!

hey Jason, why is the Extreme line nolonger listed on your site? Are they re-designing those already too?

Hi,

They felt the bubble plates and the Octopus pump wasn't a good match, it took too much performance from the pump. They basically went with the extreme design still in the PRO version which uses a larger stronger pump.

is there anything i can do with my extreme 150 to improve its performance since bubble plate is in mine, like a bigger pump or something.

Dfrench, a different venturi and a meshmod would up the performance alot. Once you did that you would most likely have to cut the standpipe down an inch or two.

i am surprised to hear they dumped extreme model, mine does perform pretty good probally could be a little better. It is in 8.5 inches of water with riser tube all the way down, but will buy another pump to try out some mods on it, thanks luke.

I got this response from the President of CoralVue today regarding the Extreme Line.

___________

Hello Jason,

There are not any problems with the skimmer that you purchased. We decided to leave the bubble plate models to the new Octopus Pro Series because of the pump that is used with this skimmer. The latest Octopus design has a new venturi injector as well as increased plumbing diameter that gives it some added performance. The model that you have now has actually been purchased from us by another company and we will be private labeling it for them under another name. So in short the skimmer you have is a very good design, but you will not see it under the Octopus name from now on.

Hope this helps.

David

I am having a hard time choosing a skimmer. I guess this atleast crosses the ext ps-200 off my list. Can anyone shed any light on what this means for the actual owners of the extreme skimmer line? Should this even stop someone from buying one of the skimmers? It just makes the octo 250 pro look that much better!

Hi Everyone,

The Extreme line is still a good skimmer. I think Octopus is just trying to improve there skimmer line and have tried a few different methods. The extreme smaller line basically grew into there big PRO models, which seem to be really good.

I would imagine from a manfuacture stand point, they found the standard NW and DNW was a better fit for production and didn't see the performance advantages on the smaller extreme.

This is just my opinion (guess), but I know Octopus really wants to put out a quality product and has just taking some time to find what works best for them.

There only flaw I think has been they changed models way too fast, but if you look at say EuroReef and go back on there history, you'll find they made design changes almost every year or couple of years. So over coarse of time, they redesigned there skimmer many times, always trying to improve, but that didn't mean there previous models were not good. They just wanted to make them better.
