OT - Doberman Pinscher

This summer I'll be getting a doberman pinscher pup. I've wanted one for years and have done my research, but there are very few around the Farmington area, and since we can't have dogs in the dorms I haven't had much experience with them or been able to talk to owners. I've done tons of research and believe that they're the dog for me, but I want to hear some personal experiences with them. If you own a dobe or know someone who does, please post your experiences. Also, if you know of a breeder in the St. Louis area (or MO for that matter) please either PM me with their info or post it on here Thanks guys!

I have had two, A male and female at seprate times.
I did not notice a difference between the two as far as attitude.

They were big couch potatoes, lap dogs.
They were leery of strangers but if you gave no signals or warnings to them that they were bad, they would warm up and accept new people.

They did not roam out of sight from the house, I lived in Robertsville on 350 acres, no fences.

I would get one again if I had the house room and yard room for them.

Only draw back is if you had food in their dish they would eat all day long and not know when to stop, they can get obese quick, and with their frame they do not handle obisity very well.

I would contact Andy Lochman of Andy's Animals in Valley Park, he got me my Rottie and it's a supurb animal. Im sure he could get you a Doberman that is not imbred and of quality, and not from a mill ofcoarse.

I hope your an active person or have a big yard. If you don't wear the dog out, it'll drive you crazy. I had one with a small yard. It would dig holes all over the place. They need to run! and run! and run! My wifes roommate in college had one. It was one of the dumbest dogs I ever met and boy was it stubborn. I think for the right person it is a great dog. BUT you have to be wiling to put a lot of time into training and spending time with it. I have given up on big dogs (dobermans and boxers). I now have toy rat terriers. They are great and easy to care for. I can't go back. It's like going from an overflow wet dry to a reef ready set up for me. I can't go back to a big dog. Good luck!

I trained both of mine the common commands in two days.
The boy would not heel as well as I wanted to, the female was very obidiant.

min pins bark WAAAY too much (IME).

mine doesnt bark enough...the only time he does is when he first goes outside. he likes to let everyone know hes there.

My friend has a male dobe and it was a great dog. Now it's older and will atack any other male dog in an instant. He will fight till the end. I will say the owner should have brought it up with a little better attitude. Great around people

I couldn't be happier with my American Staffordshire Terrier that I adopted from a local rescue organization so when I saw your request I did a search for a similar doberman group and found this link to a St Louis doberman rescue organization. They may not be the best place to find a puppy as most of the dogs listed seem older but you might find other good info on the site. The fee listed for a puppy is $350. Is that about the going rate these days? You might also try the search feature on the site using your zip code as there might be something even closer than St Louis.

my min pins does'nt bark a lot, friendly with people, great with kids, she like sleep under blanket, very smart.

I would of rather had a doberman but my wife insisted on a English Mastif.....WOW....a 175 pound couch potatoe that thinks she is a lap dog! Stick with the Doberman!

These dogs are great. They are beautifull. Very smart. I would suggest you start early with lessons from a pro. the dogs can be very and I mean very hiper. They need either a lot of room or a lot of walking. I have had two of them and would have another if I had the room. The more you work with them the better they become. I don't know of a supplier. Might check the Post-Dispatch pet section. Good Luck..

My uncle had one growing up and he was a good dog. As he got older his patience seemed to run out. He did bite my nephew one time but it was the boys fault for being stupid. He jumped on him while he was sleeping. That said I don't know how good of family dog they would be. I have two labs and they are great dogs. I would recomend a lab to anyone. I wold definatly not get a small dog though. They tend to have bad potty training problems. We got rid of two shii-tzu's because they had too many accidents.

Dobermans get in your blood. We just put down our first one last summer. She was 11. It was horrible. We got a new GSD pup, but couldn't shake the grief. So we ended up adopting a Doberman rescue, and are now in the process of adopting another.

If you want a dog that is totally devoted, very demanding, and a big suck, a Dobe's for you. Make sure it is socialized very well right from the start with kids, dogs, etc.

Chelsey, there is a dog show this weekend in Columbia MO. You might check out the show. I'll be there with several breeds, including Dobermans.

This weekend I have to go home...no way around it Flash, do you breed dobes or are you the handler for several people?

Just the Handler mostly although actively involved in Dobermans and Boxers.

Then do you know of any good breeders that I could get a dobe from? I would love to be able to find a healthy blue and tan (I am aware of the problems that some have, which is why I need a reputable breeder, and even then if I am not satisfied with the health and condition I'll go with black or red). Thank you!
