I know a few of you are into this sort of thing...

I completed my first 70.3 half ironman on Sunday. It was a great race (Musselman Triathlon in Geneva) and I had an amazing time! It was incredibly well run/organized, and the volunteer support was beyond great.

I'm a pretty solid swimmer, definitely more of the tortoise than the hare. With the added buoyancy of a wetsuit I can do ok. When I heard the announcement that wetsuits weren't going to be allowed (water temps were just over 78*), I got a little nervous about making the swim cutoff. I was able to get into a pretty good rhythm and came out of the water ahead of schedule.

The bike is far and away my strongest leg. I had to consciously slow myself down a few times as I was worried about pushing too hard and running out of gas on during the run (which I've done before). A wicked storm (yes, wicked) blew threw and we had to deal with some heavy rains and lightning for about 45 minutes. Visibility became a problem, but the course never became dangerous. I finished the bike in about 3 hours... right on schedule.

Then came the dreaded run. I'm a decent runner up to about 8 miles. 10 miles I can do. Slowly. Over 10 is usually a struggle. My goal for the race was slow and steady... walk the bigger hills and average a 10min/mile over the length of the course, and that's exactly what I did.

All in all, I beat my goal by 24 minutes, had an awesome time!

Official times:
1.2 mile swim: 52 minutes, 17 second
56 mile bike: 2 hours, 59 minutes, 38 seconds
13.1 mile run: 2 hours 15 minutes, 19 seconds

Total time: 6 hours, 16 minutes, 7 seconds

Awesome, congrats. I hold in very high esteem anyone who can complete anything over an oly in terms of distance!

The guy who runs the Musselman also does a duathlon earlier in the season at Watkins Glen called the Fly By Night. You should check that out next year if you've never been - probably my all time favorite multisport event (especially if biking is your strong area - riding on the actual race track is pretty amazing).

Nice dude!! I have always wanted to do something like that. By the time I stop having kids and settle into life it will be rough to get into. I come from a family of Boilermaker(15k Utica run) runners. 3 of them just ran it last week. Quite an accomplishment man. Congrats!

If anyone in the greater Syracuse area is looking to break in to multisport, this might be a good choice:

It's "just" a sprint Duathlon, so you don't have to worry about swimming and it is not very long. The RD is a good friend of mine who is running this as a fundraiser for the CNY chapter of Susan G Komen for the Cure to support breast cancer research and prevention activities in this area. The course is nice and easy and it should be a pretty laid back event.

hmmm, Is there such thing as just swimming and biking? Really good swimmer here, and decent cyclist, but an absolute waste of life when it comes to running lol.

Yes, it's called an "aquabike" and it's even more rare than the elusive duathlon.

At one point the people who run the Cazenovia triathlon were talking about an aquabike but I don't know if it ever actually happened.

Also, many of these events allow for relay entries, so you can find a friend or two and split up the disciplines. IMHO this is a great way to do it since a) it's less for each person to concentrate on, and b) you get some sense of accomplishing something with your friends as a team.

I'm picking' up what you're puttn' down. HATE HATE HATE running. Love to ride. Dirt, road, doesnt matter. Swimming...oy.

haha thanks Mark, not on sunday i wasnt up to my par. The race is an amazingly organized event and great for anyone not wanting to spend 300 bucks on a iron man sponsored event (however IM events are worth the extra cash i feel) however there are a lot of issues with the bike course, the roads are pretty tore up , all be it a relatively flat course, you could bike faster on a well paved course of hills than this flat one. the run is very difficult IMO. 7 miles up hill. then its down, but it just rips you up.

My experience that day wasnt one on a positive note, since i botched my race and bonked 3 miles into the run. my goal was 4:50 but ended up with a 5:16

Swim- 30 min
bike - 2 hours 46 min (dang head wind)
run - 1:56 ( Bonked, i usually run 7:30 min/mile)
total- 5:16 (horrible for me)

All in All, i have given this race two tries and each time something goes wrong and i do horribly. However 3 weeks ago i was in Mont Tremblant 70.3 and turn in a mountain course time of 4:56 so ill go forward to nationals with that in mind.

JacksonPT, congrats on your race man, glad you PR'ed yourself b 26 minutes! good job

If only triathlons were growing coral, biking, and drinking beers. I'd even sub one out for bowhunting(except the beers). Eh, to each his own

Congrats. Pretty sure I'm over my marathon phase. Speedos and spandex aren't for me. It does feel good to hit the weights again.
