Peeping Banggai Fry

Hahahahah! Nice! Its hard to get roti and live mysid here. So the only breedable fish are the banggais. And so far that has worked out well since there is a demand for tank raised banggais here. Plus i do love banggais. Who knows maybe someday I can build more tanks to breed the banggais. But right now im just doing this to recover some cost plus i get satisfaction from being able to successfully rear them in captivity. :D

Yeah its a loosing game, but it beats gambling! Banggais are my favorites too. So cool especially when they're so tiny and exactly like their parents!

edandsandy - yeah its going to be in-breeding. Based on my research with fish that should not be an issue until like the 2nd-3rd generation. Its hard to find another pair from which to get the mate for your fries. If you could find another banggai from a different source which you can pair up with one of your fries then that would be much better.

Thats why I said I was going to pair them "with other tank bread banggais to get more going". To be clear I am NOT going to pair siblings up. Even if it isn't a problem (like with ocellaris it doesn't matter until like 8 generations of sibling pairs) it weakens the name and strength of tank bread banggais.

We have 1 baby this morning :)

And we can see the others trying to push their way out. I put 1 piece of mysis shrimp to entice the daddy to release
The rest. He kinda got excited about the shrimp and then passed.

I left the fish room hoping he will release the others soon. We have been gut loading bbs all week, I placed the 1 baby in
a breeders box, and fed him/her some bbs it was so funny watching the baby swim after the bbs and eat.

I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again for sharing your thread and your advise I don't know if I could have come this far with out your help.

OK, so I couldn't wait any longer for daddy to spit out the babies, it was killing me!
1 baby, then we had 2 babies, then a 3rd.
I reread this entire tread, especially the part when you said net the daddy and he will spit the fry....

SOOOOO, I talked with Ed about catching the daddy and he said, I don't know so I said well I DO!
come watch, so I carefully caught the daddy and he spit out 18 more babies!
for a total of 21 babies! they are so cute! :love1:
So soon as I can I will upload the pictures and share them with you. :celeb3: :celeb3: :celeb3:

We put more bbs in the nursery and they are already eating!

Daddy is looking really skinny, I think I'm going to keep him in the holding tank for a little longer to put some weight back on him....
I just hope his mate will remember him!

Congrats edandsandy! Thats a lot of fry you got there! Try to make a fake urchin using some zipties, epoxy and a plastic bottle cap. This will minimize the stress. Oh and if you can divide the fry into 3 groups so they wont compete for space. One thing i learned using a small hatching cage, you can keep no more than 7 in each hatching cage. Otherwise they will start to compete for space earlier and kill each other. Good luck! :)

Thanks!
We have 2 caps in there, we just pulled them out for the picture :)
Do you think they will be ok in the breeders box until tomorrow?

Today we separated the babies into 3 different breeder boxes, we have a total of 23 babies! They are eating very well, it is so cute to see them chase after and eat their food. They have big fat red/orange tummies too!

I still have the daddy in the same tank, trying to put a little more weight on him, I am going to catch the momma and put her in the 10g next week.

Thanks snakemanvet,
When we made the transfer, one of the babies was showing signs of SFS.
Tonight at dinner time it was laying on the bottom of the nursery not moving. :(
So we are down to 22 babies out of 23. The remaining are eating very well with big fat tummies.
Next time I will separate them at birth, Ed was a little sad too :(

Hey everyone, we were watching the tank this afternoon and noticed 3 of our 4 Banggai "dancing" so to say.
I grabbed my iPhone, and started recording.
I really think we have 2 males and 2 females! if you remember, the daddy is still in the 10g holding tank and eating like he hasn't eaten 3 weeks!
We were hearing a croaking sound like a drum fish!
Here is a little video we made in a hurry! So please be patience with us. I am a noobie to posting on you tube! Please enjoy!
Ed was trying to help me set up the video recorder, that video shows a little more "dancing" going on. I will upload that one in a minute.
I'm not sure if they were actually exchanging anything or just practicing... :fish2: :inlove: :fish2:
