Perry's 120 Gallon Reef

Let me know how you like the component system! I'm going to get that going as well...once I have coral again haha. Anthias and coral are looking great! The red planet is ridiculous.

Thanks Flo, you are too kind :)

Hardware Update:

*Purchased Brand new 8x54watt sunpower and will be mounting on either side of the unit Reef Brite 48 Lumi Lite Blue LED Strip Lights. They are new as well.
*Purchased all brand new ATI t5 bulbs(4xBlue+, 2xCoral+, 2xAquablue special)
*Purchased used 2x mp40's, I will remove all the tunze equipment from the tank, so I will use the gyre150 and 2 mp40's for flow.
*Purchased an independent BM single doser so that I can begin the AF Component system for daily automated dosing of all 3 components.

And that is all for now...

That's a serious equipment buy! Awesome!

wow some serious upgrades...
in my opinion the ati powermodues really look better, but thats just for the look!
vortechs always a good choice!
so your are going to use the balling version of AF?
I´m also looking into changing my whole tank into SPS reef with AF method. really curious how this will work with your tank!

Nice selection of goods, should look amazing

Thank You! I am hoping they arrive before the weekend, let's hope UPS and USPS are on their game, lol...

Thanks Tim! Thanks for the compliments, I will keep the thread updated when I go online with the component system.

Thanks Matt,
Some upgrades that should help move the tank along a bit. My tunze 6105 is not operating, and I started to see detritus building on the floor of the tank, really in the left corner. I seriously doubt this will be the case soon, 2 mp40's and one gyre150 should do the trick for now. Hopefully the lighting update will help the corals colors, I am not complaining, but I feel another push is needed, time will tell...

Hey Flo!
Thanks for looking over the thread. Funny thing is I have an 8 bulb powermodule, it is in the closet, needs a ballast update, and the think is way too heavy to suspend from my ceiling. The reflectors could also use an update too, so after all the time and cost required, I feel it would be easier to have the light as a back up. I now have 2 back ups. I am seriously considering using my 60 gallon frag tank and one of the lights to make an aquaponics setup. While the climate is great for growing vegies and fruits in FL, I live under a huge canopy of trees, they are protected and so I cannot really have a garden with much light, so I have been thinking of growing with aquaponics and artificial lighting. I will mostly grow what I juice, Kale, Bok Choy, carrots, beets, things like that. I currently have a large amount of tumeric and ginger growing in the yard, in that one sweet spot I do actually get some light. Time will tell, seems like the reef and home projects are overwhelming right now, but hopefully in the upcoming weeks I will tackle some of them :)

haha Perry i had to google what aquaponics is :D

sounds interessting, but nothing for me living in an apartment^^

what an overkill... having two lights as backup :D
but it´s always good to have on, me and my friends have an old 10x 80w T5 fixture which is our backup, could use some upgrades too... but it´s hanging over my tank right now till the new lamp arives!!

Perry, switching to the Component 1,2 & 3 finally I see. This is the last step for me with the program, but I love the results I'm seeing on my corals already. For now I am sticking with ESV 2 part/mg balling combined with Components A,B,C weekly dosing in the WC buckets and daily Kalium as ABC does not include this for some odd reason. Following!

Yeah, I know I have too much stuff!
I was actually about to get a cadlights 34 gallon rimless AIO for my girlfriend, but funds tightened up a bit more when my truck started acting up, so I had to postpone that adventure. The tank is still not broken down, so maybe I will have the funds then, here is to hoping anyway!

Tweaked,
I just wanted to run through my 2 part system before starting. I am getting low on liquids, so I plan to get the the component system in place and continue it's use, assuming it dials me in. My hopes are to take my hand dosing down on all the trace minerals, I sometimes forget, and quite honestly I would rather dose in smaller parts, this is why the component system appealed so greatly to me. Thanks for following!
Perry

Perry, I see that Component 1+ contains: Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Cr, and Component 2+ contains: NaHCO3, F, I. We know these are all to be dosed in equal amounts and they recommend 50ml/100l per day in an average hard coral tank. Now my question is on Component 3+ which contains: mineral salts and K, Bo. Do you know if this 3 part is just diluted way down so equal parts can be dosed without guess work. I mean 200ml a day of mineral salts and K, Bo is crazy lol. I figured it's just watered down but wasn't sure if you had reached that info yet.

Hey Tweaked,
I think the values if I am correct, probably coincide with normal ratios of minerals depleted at the ratio of trace. Similar to the Red Sea version, I feel there is a depletion level that happens at a fraction of the normal mineral absorption, like Alk, Ca, and Mag. This is simply speculation at this point, however, we use this method at the shop, and so far I see no signs of coral health being compromised. I have seen that the levels have been very consistent through testing, yes like any 2 or 3 part, you have to see how the animals absorb ratios of these components, but they seem quite consistent thus far. I have found that the sweet spot for alk seems to determine the others. I hope that make sense, I can only say this based on testing the main parameters on this system. This does not include testing of trace, so I suspect my observations do not make science sense at this time. As far as corals go, they seem happy on the systems run with AF component, so I will give more detail when I employ on my own personal reef.

Thanks Matt, I appreciate the compliments, nitrates were up a bit(10ppm), that could explain the saturation. These pics were taken in the raw with my cannon dslr, and edited in picassa with auto-color and auto-contrast. That is it, so what you are seeing is pretty darn close to where the colors are in the tank live in person. That is the Cali Tort by the way, so blue as it loses green higher up in the tank, the frags of it I have are on the bottom, the green is much heavier. Yeah, the bubblegum milli is looking sweet, I hope the blue deepens a bit :) Time will tell, thanks again!

Thanks Matt, well Cali Matt I should say ;) As mentioned in response to Canada Matt, the colors have sort of deepened with elevated NO3, or at least as the fish population has grown. I have added 4L of Matrix to help lower the nitrates. I plan on adding more fish soon, so I think the Matrix will help keep them low with a much larger bioload, that is the plan anyway :)

The anthias look great Perry :) gives me plenty more motivation to get mine! The sticks are looking just as good though! You've really got some wonderful colour going on!

Filthy good colors Perry, the acros are looking beautiful mate - i need more bloody lyretails.........:)

I had a mate's girlfriend ask me if they were goldfish......... both of them are banned from the house and i deleted their phone numbers......... :mad2:
