Petco is acquiring Drs. Foster and Smith

I think this helps out Petco, one of there biggest issues is taking an order and filling it correctly. With the LA system in tact things will work now like they are suppose to? Plus it gives LA another wholesaler to get fish from.

Just a thought but what if LA/DD become an entirely separate entity from petco and DR's F&S.

Kevin claims he and Dr. Foster are staying onboard but it sounds like Dr Smith is ready to hang it up. It will ultimately come down to $$$ and Petco will run Kevin and Dr Foster off...

I buy everything and I mean everything from Foster and Smith. Nobody can beat there prices nor the free shipping over $49 and in 3 to 4 days. Maybe Petco will give out occasional coupons though, that is the only thing I have against F&S.:headwally:

When DFS purchased FF express many years ago I had major concerns too. Flying Fish Express was the leader in online fish. DFS had much higher fish prices, lacked the unique species, but the shipping was significantly less. Though they changed the name overnight, they kept the great aspects of FF Express (except the ridiculously low prices) like the weekly specials and the collectors corner and improved upon them. The quality and health of the fish improved and they eventually provided a better product and service. I hope the same is holds true under this acquisition. If it doesn't, it will open the partially door to new competition and even better service, prices and livestock. It is the American way.

Congrats to the owners of DFS. I love to see that all your hard work has paid off.

Well, it seems that Kevin and crew are staying right where they have been and in a note (posted on RC), he indicates that nothing will change.

I hope that's true but I have to admit I'm a bit worried. I'm not one for change, especially from something that has worked so well for so long...keeping my fins crossed!

I can only imagine that Petco wanted to acquire DFS because of its strong online presence, an area where Petco is severely lacking. The Petco stores in my area are all dreary, tired looking and overpriced. I don't ever shop there. I think that their big corporate culture is going to ruin DFS although the degradation may take a while to seep in. I also think that dog/cat supplies rather than fish (especially saltwater) are Petco's primary focus. Hopefully, they don't overlook the gem that they have acquired in Liveaquaria. I wish Kevin Kohen and all at LADD much sucess in the future. I'm sure that other opportunities will present themselves if things don't pan out the way we all hope. I'll always seek out fish from Kevin Kohen no matter where he is. I have had so many great fishes over the years from LADD. At this point, my loyalty is to him not the corporate entity he works for.

When a company is purchased, the owners are often contractually required to stay a year or two to aid with the transition. My guess is that this is the case. My hope is that Petco wishes to improve their business utilizing the model DFS and possible LA has created. My guess is that DFS dry goods was the gem and LA is something they may consider selling off.

I can almost guarantee pet co isn't buying DFS for live aquaria section as it is a well known fact this is their least profitable aspect of the business. They are huge into dog/cats/birds etc products which is where 95% of their revenue comes from. Live aquaria and divers den is a very minute percentage of their business. We are talking about that section because its the one we care about :)
I'm sure they will make it work, however, If I had to guess, Divers Den would be either changed or cut out completely. You have to understand when acquiring a business they usually immediately chop the sections that dont make a decent profit.

hopefully Pet co will see the potential, and keep it around, or at least something in the like and will still need Kevin's expertise.

I think this could be a good thing if done properly. Pet co also buys a lot of their fish from QM.
