Picky naso eats only chaeto

I have a new male naso tang in a QT. For 10 days he ate nothing visible, despite all the tricks I've learned. I finally tried feeding him some chaeto from my DT fuge and he loves it! I'm hoping this will be a springboard to other foods. Question - is him eating chaeto almost exclusively bad? Doe anyone know of any meaty or frozen foods I can try? Thanks.

Using a rubber band or nori clip add a piece of previously frozen fish{saltwater} or shrimp to the chaeto he will get some on accident and find he likes it. the good thing is he is eating. Also tangs are herbivores so that diet is fine, just not long term .Nori from the asian food store is what alot of us use just make sure it has no additives.
Best of luck , Lee

It's great that the tang has started to eat, even if it's only chaeto. Often, if a fish hasn't eaten in that long, it refuses to ever eat and starves.

As sassafrass mentioned, tangs are primarily herbivores, eating plant matter. I have had tangs devour frozen brine shrimp, which are of limited nutritional value, but for the long term, stick with nori, macroalgae, etc.

You could try some flakes containing marine algae and Spirulina. Also try some blanched or previously frozen vegetables like broccoli or Romaine lettuce on a clip or rubber-banded to a small piece of LR. (The freezing or blanching breaks down the cell wall structures making it easier to digest.)

Cheato is fine for his main food source for now, but it is rather difficult to digest and I'd hazard a guess that it's not the best thing for your tang long term. When feeding him cheato try attaching some other foods to it as well. I've done something similar in the past with several fish and have weened them from eating only live foods to eating anything including flake food. At the very least try feeding him other foods with the cheato and then reduce the amount of cheato you feed over time until you aren't feeding any. He should start to eat the other foods and find that they taste as good or better.

Naso tangs are predominantly herbivores and may not take to any sort of meaty foods for quite some time. Chaeto is good, but also try some other forms of seaweed/ algae. Most brands sold at LFS's have the clip included in the package. Once the fish understands that the stuff you are adding is food, it will come around; patience is key.

Once the fish is established in your tank, it will become an absolute PIG and will eat anything you happen to put in the tank.

and when everything else fails try the Sera stick on algae tablets.
Every fish in my tank goes nuts for them--no mess no fuss no bother

Thanks again. I just ordered some sera O-nip FD-mix tabs. I hope that's what you were referring to.

Years ago, when I had a naso in a 180 gal, he ate like a pig. Hopefully when he gets into my DT with other fish he'll get the message and start eating some protein.
