I currently have a 20 gallon high reef tank that is cycling. My tank has about 20 lbs. of live rock, and 15 lbs. of sand. I've got two 240 gph powerheads, and a 50 gallon HOB filter. I plan on purchasing a skimmer in the near future.

I'm looking to keep beginner corals. Nothing too fancy. I've got a 4 bulb T5. The one coral I'm most interested in keeping, once my tank is established, and matured is Frogspawn. Other than that, I'm looking for polyps, and the like.

As far as fish: I plan on keeping it simple with a pair of clownfish, and most likely a goby/pistol combo...I know, that probably sounds boring for a lot of you. However, I have a 3 year old that I need to entertain (at least, that was how I explained all of these purchases to my wife!).

I'm not looking to add fish for about 8 weeks. That includes a 4 week QT. I'm fortunate that there are three non-bigbox LFS around me. One of them is the biggest in the state of Ohio. The problem there - too many options on clownfish. They've got True, Picasso, Fancy, Mocha, Black, Maroon, Onyx, Snowflake, Clarkii, and the list goes on. From what I've read, the darker they are, the more aggressive. It's a bit overwhelming!

Anyways, I think my stock is alright, but if you see issues, please let me know!

Hi,

My cycle is completed and did water change today. I will probably add CUC to my 54g corner this weekend. Now i am debating tgat first fish purchase for QT tank. Here is a list of fishie considerations when complete. I want reef safe. I know i can't add all of these but maybe 1/2 of list. Which should I do first from the list?

Clown/Barber Pole goby pistol shrimp pair
Green or Citron Goby pair
Royal Gamma
Blue forktail no, it has special requirements
Common or percula clown pair
Goldflash fairy wrasse or finespotted fairy wrasse aggressive, needs larger tank
Coral beauty, flame angel (know reef safe is questionable) no dwarf angel is really reef safe
Eventually mandarin goby your tank is not really large enough to sustain without a lot of work
Orchid Dottyback all dottybacks are aggressive, although P. fridmani is less so than most

Alright.. I have a 180g with a 55g sump/fuge.. and only housing a CUC right now.. This tank will mainly be SPS dominated.. Also, will it be okay to add them in the order listed below?

Future Residence

Copperband Butterflyfish x 1 ones from Australia are best and more likely to succeed
Ocellaris Clownfish x 2 - Wanted Maroon Gold Bar, but I think they will be too aggressive. GSM are gorgeous but super aggressive
Blue Caribbean Tang x 1
Flame Hawkfish x 1 means no shrimp
Flame Angelfish x 1 not really reef safe, but more on the meaty LPS side

Thanks!

As a very general rule, that is correct. However all the "varieties" of designer clowns which are morphologically separate are similar to A. ocellaris or A. percula, and all have similar, relatively non-aggressive behaviors.

29 gallon tank, 40+ lbs live rock, some coral 10 gallon fuge with protein skimmer and full of chaeto and some mangroves, overall healthy tank. Has a pair of clowns yellowtail and falco hawkfish. Would like to know if the falco hawkfish, which seems to be the most peaceful in the tank would go after a pistol shrimp if i attempt to buy a pistol shrimp and a goby to get a pair. or if the pistol shrimp is no good, what would be a good little sand sifting goby to ad that will sift sand things up and be an interesting fellow to watch. And i dont need the whole story on starving fish, i will take my chances. Thank you

Replacing Clown

Replacing Clown

I had one of my percula clowns jump out of my tank (no cover). I have remedied that and want to replace them.

Current fish:
1 Percula Clown
1 Yellow tail damsel
1 Green/blue chromus
1 Royal gramma
1 Algae Blenny
2 Serpent stars

Should I replace the other percula or can I get a different species of clown?

sand sifting fish create sandstorms. A falco hawkfish will be unable to catch a paired pistol shrimp.

get a super small A. percula. Another species is not a good idea.

yes I understand that being in a pair thats the point of the goby
but finding a pair is a lot harder and more expensive than just buying the shrimp and goby individually

They will find each other quickly and do not have to be purchased together.

My plan is for an aprox. 100 gallon reef tank...

I love lionfish, eels, and puffers...

Is there ANY chance of ANY species of either of these remaining peaceful in a reef environment with all the corals and CUC and other small fish?

Basically, no. I do not provide commentary on aggressive fish tanks. Best to ask in the aggressive fish forum which is found here. .

At the moment I have a 40 gallon long reef set up with,
20-35lbs of live rock
2-4" of course sand,
A bunch of Lps, soft, mushroom and a birds nest Corel
2 bangi cardinal
2 convict gobies
Ocellairs clown
Six line wrase
Two spotted gobie
Scooter blenny
2 emerald crabs
Clean up crew including cleaner skunk shrimp and peppermint shrimp.

I am interested in getting a arrow crab because the previous owner of the tank had seriously neglected it and now I have a crazy bristle worm problem, to the point were they ate a star fish and I'll notice pieces of hermit crab scattered under live rock. I've heard a lot of bad things about arrow crabs but if they were feed properly they should be okay? I'm assuming I'm pretty close to my bio load but I have been adding copepods and rotifers offen to prepare for mandarin gobie in a couple of Months. Please let me know what you think of this set up

2 bangi cardinal unless a male plus female pair, will become one
2 convict gobies
Ocellairs clown
Six line wrase will become very aggressive and preclude many other fish
Two spotted gobie
Scooter blenny
2 emerald crabs can also take fish

a mandarin will not survive long term in this size tank without a lot of special effort and certainly not with a six line wrasse which will compete for copepods

arrow crabs can take fish. Feed less so solve your nutrient problem. Bristle worms are excellent detrivores.

Hi All,
I have a 90 gallon with 20 gallon sump/refugium with a reef octopus skimmer. Current stock list is..
1 Yellow Tang
2 Ocelllaris Clown
1 firefish
1 yellow tail cleaner wrasse
1 orchid dottyback.
1 cleaner shrimp and a handful of snails, crabs, and chonchs.

Currently I am trying to trap the cleaner wrasse and trade him in. After six months he has recently taken a liking to SPS corals which is unacceptable imo ;). I would like to add a handful or Chromis (either blue-green or black axil) and replace the cleaner wrasse with a fairy wrasse.

Is 3-5 Chromis too much? Any differences between the blue-green and black axil in regards to aggression? Will the dottyback hate on the new tank mates?

Thanks,
E

I have a 55 long tank with a fluval 405 canister filter. Regular strip light, protein skimmer, 300 watt heater. Its gonna be a fish only tank for now. My tanks temp now is at about 80-84° without the heater on. Is that to high?

chromis are damsels

Will the dottyback hate on the new tank mates? likely fairy and flasher wrasses may be a problem

Thanks,
E
