90 reef

right now i have
tomini tang
clarkii clown
lawnmower blenny

really just wondering what all else i can put in there because im all sorts of lost on what would be good with the rest of my fish. I have soft corals

thanks
As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations. Do some research, create a stocking list, and check back and I will gladly provide commentary.

Might it be a problem to keep one Royal Gramma with a pair of Purple Firefish Gobies in a 34 gallon cube with a good amount of cover and barriers breaking up the lines of sight? (Other fish as well, but was concerned about these two species in particular).

I've heard that Royal Grammas may cause trouble with other fish that are purple, but I wasn't sure if that would be fish that are entirely purple or just have a bit of purple as is the case with the Purple Firefish Gobies?

I cannot say definitively because of the tank size. In a large tank, no issue. It is not really a coloration issue it is more of occupation of the same ecological niche and territory differentiation, which in small tanks, is more problematic.

My stocking list for 40g that you said will work:
Starry blenny, sixline wrasse and dwarf flame. For future addition once the tank matures, can the final addition be:
2 clownfish OR
2 bangaii cardinal
thanks again

Hi Steve,

This list is for my friend's 180 gallon FOWLR tank -

1 - False Personifer Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus meredithi)
1 - Scribbled Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus duboulayi)
1 - Blue Caribbean Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus)
3 or 4 - Red Fairy Anthias (Pseudanthias kashiwae) 1 male - the rest female
1 - Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus)
1 - Christmas Wrasse (Halichoeres claudia )
1 - Bicolor Foxface (Lo uspi)
1 - Golden Angelfish (Centropyge aurantia)

Thanks again

2 bangaii cardinal this is the better option provided you get a male plus female. Clowns are much more aggressive. As I mentioned, however, the sixline wrasse, being aggressive and established may limit your options going forward

1 - False Personifer Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus meredithi)
1 - Scribbled Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus duboulayi) ideally both angels should be added concurrently. The scribbled is going to be relatively passive
1 - Blue Caribbean Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus)
3 or 4 - Red Fairy Anthias (Pseudanthias kashiwae) 1 male - the rest female
1 - Blue Tang (Paracanthurus hepatus) needs a longer tank
1 - Christmas Wrasse (Halichoeres claudia )
1 - Bicolor Foxface (Lo uspi)
1 - Golden Angelfish (Centropyge aurantia) often difficult

Thanks again

What if he can't add both of them @ the same time? Which fish should he add 1st?

always most passive first, in this case the Chaetodontoplus duboulayi.

180 Gallon Reef tank with a focus on Softies/LPS, maybe SPS later if I get brave enough. I’m looking to do lots of coral, but also have a pretty good collection of Tangs as well. The tank will have plenty of flow (4 Hydor Koralias set on a Red Sea wavemaker along with a Little Giant MD4 main pump) and a lot of room for the fish to wander. Kind of wondering what I can get away with comfortably, I plan on giving the fish away to the LFS if/when they get too big for the tank (aka the Unicorn Tang/Blonde Naso Tang).

Tank Specs:
180 gallon (72x24x24), 60 Gallon 2 Sock Sump (addtional 40 gallon to be added later), 250 Gallon Rated Skimmer, Phosphate Reactor, Biopellet Reactor, 4 Custom Evergrow D120s, 250lbs live rock, 1-2 inch deep sand bed with plenty of open space.

1x Unicorn Tang (For Sure)
1x Blonde Naso Tang (If it works)
1x Kole Tang (For Sure)
1x Desjardini Tang (If it works)
2x Ocellaris Clownfish (Mated Pair)
5-6x Green Chromis
1-2x Six Line Wrasse
2x Larger Peppermint Shrimp
1x Watchman Gobie of some sort
*Wild Card* 1x Blue Throated Trigger (I’d take two of the tangs off this list if I could as I’ve heard these can be reef safe)

Thanks for the help!

1x Unicorn Tang (For Sure) Way too large for your tank
1x Blonde Naso Tang (If it works) Too large for your tank
1x Kole Tang (For Sure)
1x Desjardini Tang (If it works)
2x Ocellaris Clownfish (Mated Pair)
5-6x Green Chromis Chromis will winnow down to one or two at most, but have been coming in with health prroblems
1-2x Six Line Wrasse two is not likely to work
2x Larger Peppermint Shrimp
1x Watchman Gobie of some sort
*Wild Card* 1x Blue Throated Trigger (I'd take two of the tangs off this list if I could as I've heard these can be reef safe)

more appropriate than the two large tangs, but will eat inverts and potentially small fish

We at Reef Central do not subscribe to the idea of re-homing fish. Buy for the tank you have.

Thanks for the help!

Tank = 55g
Sump = Yes (~15g)
Live Rock = ~60lbs

I feed once per day and alternate between Brine Shrimp, Rogger's Reef Food and Mysis Shrimp. I don't mind buying other food, but it might be hard to feed multiple times per day because of my work schedule.

Current Inhabitents:

1 x Purple Firefish
1 x Cleaner Shrimp
1 x Galaxy Coral
1 x Hammer Coral
Assorted CUC
Assorted Polyps

I was looking at adding an Ignitus Anthias (Pseudanthias ignitus)

Their website says 70g, so I don't know if it would be a good idea or not?

I'd love to put a pair of Fiji Barberi Clownfish in a 16G nano tank. What one other fish can I add to it? If a pair is not possible and only 1 Fiji Barberi Clown is housed, what 1 other species of fish would be good? I'm thinking Maybe a damselfish - Yellowtail or Fiji Devil?

Currently have a 40 gallon breeder with some sand and minimal rock right now, and had 1 blue damsel and one stripped. I wanted to add some schooling fish, so my friends and the lfs suggested some blue green chromis. So I got five of those. After acclimating and keeping them separated for a while, I added them to the tank.

First day was fine. Last night, I came home, fed them and myself, then went shopping. Came home a couple hours later, and one was found like this:

http://youtu.be/WZL89uf3gR4

So I separated him, but he died a couple hours later. I go to bed, wake up in the middle of the night and decided to check the tank, and a second one was dead at the bottom. My striped damsel was pecking at both while they were down, but I suspect he is the culprit in beating them up.

So, is my striped damsel gonna do this until they're all gone? Is there something else I should do with the tank? I did feed the 2 damsels before introducing the chromis to the tank, and rearranged some rock. Do I need to add lights? The striped damsel is calm during the day, but at night he seems to pester the hell out of the chromis.

Marginally ok. The downside is that anthias are water column fish that do best with significant flow which is similar to their nature habitat. So a smaller tank is probably ok, but not ideal. Anthias do better long term with multiple feedings per day. Frozen, including Nutramar Ova, mysis, etc is ideal.

two damsels in a 16 gallon tank is undesirable. Clownfish are damsels and once sexually mature, depending on species, want to control 25-50 gallons of water column. A single clown will turn female and have similar territorial requirements.

If it were me, I would change LFS. Bad advice to put a group of chromis in with a damsel. Especially in a small tank.

Coincidentally, this is the same lfs that recommended the blue and striped damsel as my two first fish. However, in their defense, when I was asked what kind of tank I wanted to run, not being very knowledgeable, they had little to go on, and those were recommended as they're easy fish to start with. When I went back to the lfs, I simply asked for some schooling fish, but do not think I told them about the two damsels. I want a fowlr with lots of fish activity, but if this striped damsel is gonna be a pain with all my new fish, I'll likely need to find him a new home.

The striped guy is calm during the day, but last night, he would not stop pestering the chromis, or even the blue damsel which he use to be fine with: http://telijah.dyndns-web.com:8888/ . I've been watching my tank all day, thank god for a slow work day!

Recommending damsels to start a new tank is at best poor advice. Remember there is an inherent conflict of interests between LFS and new aquarists. They want to sell fish. You want long term success. The damsels will be a pain going forward.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to start finding a new home for the striped guy. The blue one, which my friends thought would be the trouble maker, has been quite docile, so I may try to hang onto him while I try other fish, but will be prepared to remove him quickly if need be.
