Thanks :-) Anything can be ordered! Dwarf angels maby?

Dwarf angels are algae grazers so you would need a larger, more mature tank. Two of my favorites are the pink streak wrasse and any of the species of possum wrasse. Not commonly kept because they are not as overtly flashy but excellent fish none the less.

Curious about adding a goby

Curious about adding a goby

Hi,
I have a 29g All stock Coralife Biocube with protein skimmer and bio balls in place. Was cautious and did a two month cycle. FOWLR 30 lbs live rock, live sand 3" in back angling down to 1" at the front. I have:

Fish:
1 Tomato Clown (small)
1 PJ Cardinal (small)

Inverts:
2 Blood Red Fire Shrimp
3 Peppermint Shrimp
2 Mexican Turbo snails
3 Turbo snails
2 Bumble Bee snails
3 Neriths

The clown was in first, PJ a few weeks later. Levels have been perfect, no ammonia or nitrate spikes since cycle, nitrate are zero too.
I really just want one more kind of fish, and I like the look of the goby. I wouldn't do more than a pair and was looking for a good, easy to care for goby that can be solo or a pair? I poke around on live aquaria for ideas and feel like I would prefer a recommendation.

Thanks!
Melissa

Any of the shrimp gobies (and pistol shrimp alpheus randall) are behaviorally the same so pick what appeals. However pairing them is unlikely.

Would I be better served pairing the clown and/or PJ vs. adding gobies? My LFs said they are fine solo but I feel like I do see them listed as schooling in some places.

Thanks!

Cardinals will initially shoal but longer term will form pairs; clownfish solo will eventually become females. Your particular species of clownfish is one of the more aggressive ones making additional fish difficult in your sized tank once it acquires sexual maturity.

Thanks LFS for my "very friendly" clown. I appreciate the help!

69 gallon main dt, running since October and making the transition to softies/ macro tank. Current inhabitants
Pair of percula clowns
2 green chromis( they appear to have paired as well)
Starry blenny
Royal gramma
Tail spot blenny
Golden dwarf moray
Long nose hawkfish

Wanting to add:
Flame angel
Valentini puffer
Trio of anthias( carberryi possibly)
Firefish
Mandarin( once macro has established and pods pop is stable)

Connected to this tank is a 40 br with a mantis shrimp that will be a heavily planted display Refugium and a 20 l sump with jns u-2 skimmer. I know this is heavy stocking, but is it doable with all the macro? Thanks!!

Your existing population is more or less fine; I wold not add any of those you mention because of bioload and behavior.

I just had a valentini that passed about and it did fine. So I am definitely adding another
One of those at some point. If I got rid of the chromis and did the anthias instead and took off the firefish, could I do that? So it would be clowns, anthias, starry and tailspot, gramma, hawkfish, valentini and flame angel?

Hello Steve,
Started tearing down my 40g breeder and working on the 180..
Currently in the 40g breeder,
4 4-stripe Damsels
1 Yellowtail Damsel
1 Lawnmower Blenny
1 Clownfish (false percula)
Magnificent Foxface (Siganus magnificus) 4"

Will be moving rocks and all to 60g frag tank, going in the AM to get enough established live rock from LFS to fill sump (40g) and have some in frag..

Planning on moving everyone one over after the mini-cycle (which I know I will have)
Taking advantage of the move and placing the 4 4-stripe damsels in the sump.. ( they play well among themselves but are aggressive towards others)
Of the remaining which should I move into the frag next and how long between..
I have not seen the lawnmower blenny, yellowtail damsel, clownfish or the foxface even look at each other, or show any type of aggressiveness, the 4-stripes are a different story,,, do you think it would be ok to just put them in the frag tank at the same time..I can divide the frag up if you think that would be better..
Long term the yellow tail damsel and clownfish will be in the wifes 20g long , and the foxface, and lawnmower blenny will go into the 180g..
I am thinking it will take me around 1-1/2 months to get the 180g setup and start cycling..

Thanks, James

If the valentini passed passed away, it did not do fine. The chromis have different characteristics behaviorally than anthias which require a much larger tank. My recommendation is still not to add fish to the current mix.

4-stripes damsels are a major PITA. I would definitely separate them. The remaining fish should not interact aggressively.

Hi Steve,

40 breeder 20L sump w/ fuge, 45lbs mixed rock. Mixed reef.

I'm unsure the order in which to add these fish and I understand some may be incompatible/overstocked. Im looking for the best combo and the order to add the livestock.

(2) black ice clownfish

Blue spotted jawfish

Purple firefish

Midas or bi-color blenny

The main fish in interested in is a mandarin dragonette, once my tank is mature of course. I will also have a separate copepod/phytoplankton culture to be sure there is sufficient food source.

Inverts- mix of different snails

Thanks for keeping this going. It's very generous of you to take time away from your day to answer everyone!

Blue spotted jawfish does best with cooler temperatures; needs a fairly deep substrate sand combination

I would not add another tang which is an alge grazer. You are able to handle one or more peaceful wrasse such as possum wrasse, flasher wrasse, etc. This thread is only answered by Reef Central Staff. If you want general opinions, start your own thread in Reef Fish.

Hi Reef Central Staff, looking for advice on adding fish to my reef. I have an 80 gallon look down with a sump and no cover. The tank has been established for 9 months with corals only. My main focus was to give the corals a chance to grow without competition from fish. The corals range from torches to bubble coral to sps .Lately I've started to grow hair algae due to uneaten food. i feel it is now time to add fish that will enhance the reef not necessarily be the centerpiece. No clown fish please.
Thanks Dan

Hi guys,

I have a 45 gal reef tank, filter, live sand and 50'lbs live rock. NO2, ammonia, 0 for 4 months. PO4 below .25. Calcium 420 -460, SpG 1.024 -1.026. Had ich attack so 2 percula clowns and the watchman goby are in hospital tank, treated with Cupramine. Will finish the 8 week fallow DT in two weeks. Will then move clowns and goby back in DT with skunk cleaner shrimp, 2 peppermint shrimp, pistol shrimp, mushrooms, zoas, snails and hermits.

Here's my plan. Order
BTA
Royal gramma
Small Hippo tang (will keep until too large, then trade for othe fish)
Either dwarf flame angel or coral beauty
Fire fish

BTAGoes into DT
Fish go into QT for two weeks, measure DT parameters, then into DT when ready.

Whatcha think?

As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. However, I am always happy to review stocking plans (with tank size provided) for behavioral and environmental compatibility.
