50 gallon 24x24x20 mixed reef with a sump.

Proposed stocking list:

Trio of flasher wrasse (undecided on specific type, but if there's a type that makes the most sense in this configuration, I'm all ears!)

Pair of ocellaris clownfish

A sand-dwelling fish of the shrimp goby persuasion

Thanks so much for all the time you put into this thread!

The only flasher wrasse I do not recommend is the 8 line flasher wrasse from the Red Sea; that one is very aggressive. All the others are behaviorally the same. You could get three different male species (easier to find) or attempt to find a triad of a male plus two females (difficult to find)

No problems with this plan. Always a pleasure

75 gallon fowlr
30 gallon sump
75 lb live rock

Have: 2 ocellaris, 1 valentini puffer

Would like to add:
Bicolor angel
Flame angel
Longnose hawkfish
Kole yellow eye tang

I plan on adding the angels at the same time and the tang last.

Trying to build 55 gallon mixed reef

Trying to build 55 gallon mixed reef

55 gallon tank with approx 15 gallon sump, 1-2" LS bed, 60-70 pounds LR, skimmer, heater, 3 gallon hang on fuge, Jebao RW8 wavemaker

Current Inhabitants
Ocellaris x 2
Yellow tang
lawnmower blenny
Building clean up crew which will have 10 each of Trochus, cerith, nassarius and nerite snails, 3 Turbos, 2 scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp, 1 peppermint shrimp, 1 fire shrimp and 5 blue leg hermits (these are a remnant, I won't be buying any more hermits).

Long term plans:
Fish
Royal Gramma
Citrinis Clown Goby
Red Mandarin (once I've established my Tisbe population)
Blue Dot Jawfish
Chromis x 3 (probably blue reef)

Inverts
Emerald Green Crab
Red Sea Star
Rose Bulb Anemone
Maxima

Polyps
Palythoa
Zoas x 2
Sympodium

LPS
Acan Brain
Blasto
Frogspawn
Hammer
Elegance

SPS
Acropora
Birdsnest
Montipora

Mushroom
Lavendar Mushroom

Soft Coral
Pulsing Xenia

I just saw the mandarin sticky today, and let me tell you I felt like a little boy who's puppy just died. I'm thinking of modifying my sump to try to cultivate pods in it in addition to my 3 gallon fuge, and maybe make an easily moved pod condo (the fuge dumps into the tank through gravity, but the sump is underneath).

This is a great thread. Thanks in advance for any help you're able to give me!

You will have three algae grazers; you will need to constantly supplement vegetable matter

Yellow tang needs a much larger tank
lawnmower blenny

Citrinis Clown Goby
Red Mandarin (once I've established my Tisbe population)
Blue Dot Jawfish does best in a cooler temperature; also needs peaceful tank mates. You may be a bit too crowded for this fish to thrive with all the others
Chromis x 3 (probably blue reef) I do not recommend chromis; they will end up being one long term plus they are highly susceptible to uronema marinum

That thread is very realistic; if anything, Sk8r's tank size recommendation is aggressive. I prefer a minimum of 75 gallons with no copepod competition. As this thread is only about marine fish compatibility, I am not analyzing coral or other issues.

This is a great thread. Thanks in advance for any help you're able to give me!

Thank you Steve.
Any recommendations on a colorful shoaling fish?
Would you say the blue dot is a no go in this setup or just a little risky? The blue dot and the mandarin are the two fish that first made me want to switch to saltwater. Seems like I'm getting shot down left and right today :)

Fish will not shoal in a 55 gallon tank and in fact even in much larger tanks, that look is difficult until you get into the 150 gallon size and then anthias come into play. Those have other issues with feeding requirements, however. If you remove the tang and the number of fish is reduced, AND you have proper substrate, AND you do not run the tank over about 78 F degrees, the blue dot is doable although it is difficult to find a healthy, well collected one. Remember these are collected in the Sea of Cortez where water temperature is on the cool side.

Feeling kind of sad, but your feedback is very much appreciated.

Sorry, I can only tell it like it is. I would rather see you be successful than run into problems that you will have difficulty fixing. I always advise reading a LOT before buying tanks, equipment, and fish. It makes life a whole lot easier. Unfortunately very few LFS provide good advice.

I am trying to order fish from liveaquaria such as bicolor blenny and firefish from live aquaria but there are multiple fish listed each from different places around the world. Places such as Fiji, maldives, africa, indonesia, and sri lanka. I read that fiji was good and that indonesia wasn't so good because of how they handle the fish.

Is this true? I couldn't find much about this online. Which of those places should I stay away from or would you recommend?

Fiji and Africa seem to be the most expense, but none are in stock.

Also, Any other good places to order fish online other than liveaquaria?

This thread is only about marine fish compatibility. You have already started your own thread in Reef Fish to get opinions on vendor and location. When I order any livestock online (and I only order online), guarantee is my primary vendor differentiator.

Sorry, I can only tell it like it is.

That is all I expected and your information is very much appreciated. My wife and I are currently in discussions of getting a 60"x20"x21" 110 gallon tank with an underneath sump that has a 30 gallon fuge which I believe addresses all of the issues you pointed out except temp on the jawfish, and I'm researching heaters and chillers to see what options I have to maintain the system in the 72-76 degree range.

I use LED lighting on my tanks and have no need for a chiller to maintain moderate temperatures and in fact have heaters but they never turn on. You will also need an appropriate substrate of fine sand, some gravel, some live rock rubble which is about 4 inches deep. I also recommend a pvc tunnel system buried in the substrate which can be used as a home. Also, buying a healthy fish is exceptionally important. Live Aquaria may be able to accomodate that. It is doable, just not with the system you currently have.

125 long tank

If powder brown isn't an option what tangs or other fish would you recommend

That will work. Damsels are aggressive, however, and the yellow tang, once established will make additions difficult.

Well, it would work for a while until it along with P. hepatus mature. Then it might not work so well especially with other algae grazers (dwarf angels)

I've been reading and am getting all kinds of conflicting information regarding clown gobies. I'd like to add multiple to my tank, primarily a yellow, black and green. I've read both that it never works and that they do great together. I've also read both that they'll destroy acro's and other SPS and that they do better in tanks with sps, they'll nip at the polyps, but the coral will do well as long as they are established before the clowns are added.

What are your thoughts on 2 or three clown gobies to a 55 gallon tank

Current stock:
black and white ocellaris mated pair
yellow tang
lawnmower blenny

multiples will not do well in a small tank.
