Hello,
I have a bonded pair of Genicanthus caudovittatus (from DD) in my 55g quarantine tank right now, with LR in both sides of the tank, they each claimed a side to hide in when scared. The male dominates the tank and more occasionally than not, chases the female around. I guess bonded doesn't mean they get alone huh?
Would it be wise to add another female to the mix? The new female is exactly the same size as the one currently in the tank, 4". The male is 4 3/4".
Once out of quarantine, they will be the first fish to go into a 72"x22"x22" tank.
Thanks for the great service you are providing to us all !!

Genicanthus is a difficult species group to predict the effects of adding a female. Sometimes the existing female may turn male or the existing male may turn female. I have tried pairing via putting two females together. Once it worked, once it did not. In my opinion, the results would be a roll of the dice. If I had a bonded pair, I would not risk it. Your tank size is fine for the pair.

Ok thanks but in the meantime, should I use an eggcrate and separate the two?

A leopard wrasse would not work with a mandarin. A male flame wrasse is a difficult shipper.

Not leopard I meant flasher sorry.

And I'm looking at a female flame, I enjoy the subtle beauty and there's one at the suppliers that's been there a few weeks now eating well and looking good.

A flasher would be fine. I would not do an eight line flasher, however. The female flame will turn male over time.

Anything with Wrasse and Line is aggressive is the rule right?

Anything to look out for adding them at separate times? Or should I qt them and add them together?

All flasher wrasses except the eight line from the Red Sea have a similar behavior and feeding pattern. And yes, the 4, 6, 12 lined wrasses are PITA but they are from a different family.

Thanks so much Snorv.
I know it won't be cheap, but would a trio of flames work if I add them as females at separate times?
As opposed to a flasher trio

Would it be worth setting up a 20g tank? I have an empty 10g i could use for a sump.

I have both tanks already with lots of dead rock.

What im worried about are options for fish, as in not many.

I have plans for a 6ft plywood tank with bean animal system but i had to put those on hold.

Just a few suggestions of fish would be helpful to either give me the go ahead with it. Wouldn't mind a small reef either but i understand you need a mature set up

This thread is only about marine fish compatibility. General questions such as yours would be great as a separate thread in New to the Hobby.

So I'd need to add them all at once? Could be a challenge as finding one flame wrasse was difficult enough!

The problem is that you do not know how far a female is towards "malehood" so you may inadvertently trigger an aggression problem.
