Hi there, i have a well established planted fw tank and within a week im getting into the sw side of things

I want to do a reef tank in a 40 gallon breeder,

i plan on using a reef octopus hob skimmer rated for 110gals
38-40 pounds of live rock
a carbon reactor
gfo reactor
and possibly a refugium in the future.

im not sure what would be a good bio load for this tank.
im not looking to do a whole bunch of corals, jut a few beginner ones.

as far as fish so far i've looked at

six line wrasse(or possum wrasse)
dwarf flame angel
2 ocellaris clowns
orange spotted goby

what else would be good to put in or is that too much already?
any help would be appreciated. thanks!

six line wrasse(or possum wrasse) possum wrasse is preferred as sixlines are aggressive
dwarf flame angel will not be safe with meaty LPS
2 ocellaris clowns
orange spotted goby with pistol shrimp?

any help would be appreciated. thanks!

bioload would be fine

Wife likes the sixline. Bad idea?

They can be very aggressive towards fish with similar shape.

Any experience with the two spot hogfish (bodianus bimaculatus)? Read that a small immature one should do fine with shrimp introduced beforehand.

Fish do not stay immature. It is a roll of the dice with shrimp. I would not.

current + wishlist

current + wishlist

I’m setting up my 125 mixed reef tank. I have at least 100lbs of base rock and 20-30 lbs of live rock. I have a 2-3" sand bed dual overflow into a homemade sump with skimmer. It has just finished cycling. I plan to stock it with soft coral then hard. I have no mechanical filtration aside from the skimmer. I’m still trying to decide what other filtration would be best for my set up if anything

I already have a 55g containing im going to move my livestock and possibly add my wishlist.
2 tank raised ocellaris clowns
2 kaudern's cardinal's
1 yellow tail damsel
1 Derasa Clam
5 feather dusters
2 skunk cleaner shrinp
2 peppermint shrimp
2-3 emerald crabs
2-3 hermit crabs
Assorted Nassarius and turbo snails

I would like to add
1 Tomini Tang
1 hawkfish
1 triggerfish
1 salfin or yellow tang (got my heart set on a sailfin)
1 coral beauty or flame angel
And a reef safe wrasse
Corals and an Anemone or 2
Is this too much livestock?
any sugestions on my genaral terms such as a wrasse would be helpful

I would like to add
1 Tomini Tang
1 hawkfish will eat your shrimp
1 triggerfish will eat your clean up crew
1 salfin or yellow tang (got my heart set on a sailfin) The RC recommended tank size for a sailfin is 240 gallons.
1 coral beauty or flame angel
And a reef safe wrasse flasher wrasses would work fine
Corals and an Anemone or 2
Is this too much livestock? perhaps too many largish fish

(revised)
I would like to add
1 Tomini Tang
1 yellow tang
1 coral beauty or flame angel which one in your opinion will do best with my desired set up?
1 flasher wrasse
Corals and an Anemone or 2
-How about a Magnificent Foxface instead of a trigger and hawk?

Looks good. Foxface is better BUT you would then have three algae grazers in a tank that is not mature.

Hello, I will be setting up a 75 gal display with a 30 gallon sump soon. My goal is to make this a good home for a mandarin. I have 50lbs of pukani dry rock curing for several months and 20 lbs of live rock in my BC14 now. There is a good base of pods in my 14 to seed the 75. I would like to have a bluespot jawfish, so I will be putting in a sandbed of at least 3" or at least 3" or more in spots. Bluespots and Mandarins sound like they are more timid/peaceful so i'd like to keep it a peaceful tank.

I plan on keeping LPS and softies under LEDs and if that goes well try an SPS or two.

I have read in many places that the mandarin needs a mature tank that has been established for about a year.

Really a mandarin and/or a bluespot are on the top of my list.

Would a midas and/or starry blenny be a good fit in a tank like this? I also really like the purple firefish. I can round out the tank with a couple cardinalfish.

I'm sure the kids would a pair of some type of clownfish. I have kept them in the past and I'm not sure if they would be a good tankmate for the mandarin.

I'm definetly in no rush. Also I feel like I'm rambling so....

Can I safely introduce a mandarin, bluespot jawfish, purple firefish, midas or starry blenny, and a cardinal or two in my system? If so, do these guys need to be introduced in a certain order?

Thanks much

im going to add the live stock in order with 3-4 weeks in my q tank. so it will be awhile before the foxface would be added. my plan is to put my current live stock in later today. then pick up a Tomini Tang and put in Q then add the rest as they come out of Q respectively do you think this will work.

Tomini Tang
yellow tang
coral beauty or flame angel desired set up?
flasher wrasse
Magnificent Foxface

I would suggest that the dwarf angel be added after the flasher wrasse. Then the tomini tang, yellow tang, and eventually the foxface.

Mandarins are one of my favorites!

For a BSJ, remember that cooler temperatures are better (75-76 F) and it is best to build a PVC home for the BSJ and bury it. They also need some rock rubble.

I plan on keeping LPS and softies under LEDs and if that goes well try an SPS or two.

At least 8 months or there abouts.

Really a mandarin and/or a bluespot are on the top of my list.

One blenny, a purple firefish is excellent, but you may find cardinal fish a bit bland as they are more active at night. Also, they they do best if a M+F pair

I'm sure the kids would a pair of some type of clownfish. I have kept them in the past and I'm not sure if they would be a good tankmate for the mandarin.

Amphiprion ocellaris or Amphiprion percula are relative well behaved.

I'm definetly in no rush. Also I feel like I'm rambling so....

Mandarin last, firefish first, BSJ in the middle, blenny of some sort towards the end.

Thanks much

Thanks!

If I break down and put in a pair of clowns for the kids...do you think that will have a negative effect on the mandarin? If not, when should they be introduced?

Thanks again for your time.

There should be no effect on the mandarin, introduction after the firefish would be desirable.

Steve. Thank you for your comments.

I will reconsider the 3 Tiger Queen Anthias - (Pseudoanthias lori). As much as I would like to think so, realistically I cannot guarantee feeding minimum twice per day.
I will replace them on my list with 3 juveniles of either Resplendent or Carberryi Anthias. Will a 120 gallon tank be all right for 3 of either of these ?

I will pair the Lysmata debelius. Does this preclude the Peppermint shrimp or would one be OK as well?

I did not know about the information in the blog section. Thank you for directing me there. Interesting reading. I especially liked "Never argue with a fool"

I decided I will utilize the 12 day tank transfer method prior to a 4 week observation in QT. I was never comfortable with observation only due to my lack of experience with what to look for.
I will also treat with Prazipro. At which point in the process would you treat with Prazipro?

Thanks again for your time and adding your expertise.

should be fine. Feeding more than once per day when possible would be desirable for even these anthias.

no issues

a lesson I have tried to learn but am not always successful with avoiding

GREAT decision. Best method by far

After the 12 day tank transfer during the month of observation. Prazipro is reef safe

Thanks again for your time and adding your expertise.

You are most welcome Michael

Tank transfer will preclude ich (cryptocaryon irritans) but the vast majority of people hear "visible ich" when I say observe when visible ich is not a requirement for the fish having parasites. It is far more important to look for behavior issues: is the fish reclusive? hanging out near the return? eating well? Just an additional FYI that will serve well going forward.
