I do not have a tank yet! I found this add and I am thinking of getting it. I have no clue really what I am doing. So does this look ill? and it is very packed full so I was thinking the live rock could be split to a second tank. any thoughts and and advice will be great! http://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&ad=21026568&cat=371&lpid=0&search=

ohh first post and hope to have many more as I venture into this new hobby!

Welcome to Reef Central! This type of question would be best as a separate post in New to the Hobby since this thread is about marine fish compatibility.

I posted this thread in another section but didn't get much response at all. Anyhoo, this if for my brother-in-law.

What he has:

45g aquarium
15g sump w/skimmer/fuge
45lb LR
2" sand bed
Fish List:
-Pacific Redstripe Hogfish (~3 1/2in)
-Pair of Occy clowns
-Tailspot Blennt
-Citron Goby
Corals
-a mix of SPS/LPS/Softies

My brother-in-law's 5+ year-old cardinalfish recently passed away. My sister (his wife) has requested to replace the cardinal with something else. In her words, 'Jammie (the cardinal) was boring'. All the fish have been very peaceful tank mates so far but the hogfish was added last (sometime over a year ago). My brother-in-law really wants a basslet, but I have warned him there may be compatability issues most compatability charts list hogfish and basslets with caution. The redstripe hogfish is generally seen as one of the more peaceful hogfish, LA lists it as peaceful but would that change if a basslet was added to the tank? My brother-in-law really likes the black cap basslet best (semi-aggressive) and my sis likes the gold assessor basslet (peaceful). If they went with a basslet, which would be the best choice? Do you foresee problems having a hogfish and basslet in the same tank? If you advise against them getting the basslet, what else would you recommend that is 3-4" full grown and likes to swim about the tank? I think most wrasses and dottybacks face the same problems as basslets in terms of caution when mixing with hogfish. They also really like the neon dottyback but if the hogfish has a problem with a basslet, it would probably also have a problem with a dottyback. I suggested a dwarf angel but my brother-in-law doesn't want to possibly risk the corals by getting a coral nipper so those are out. He's also open to other suggestions of fished he hasn't considered yet.

queen angelfish These two angels both want to be the dominant fish in the tank; most likely success would be introduction of juveniles concurrently
emperor fish
red mandarin, will have uv sterilizer read that this could destroy pods? A UV sterilizer does not really do a lot (no parasite prevention) other than water clarity but water clarity can be obtained without using one
Firefish, Helfrichi x2
orange spotted filefish x2 difficult. read the threads on RC before going with these
magnificent foxface

In his sized tank, I suspect that a basslet and hogfish would not work. In a significantly larger tank, it would work with reasonable aquascaping.

Now I'm going to post spec for my new tank.

-36g Elos Midi
-Modded sump with ATS/skimmer
-MP10 Vortech possibly a Seaswirl
Corals
-mix of mostly SPS/LPS, maybe a few Softies
Possible fish wish list:
-Swissguard basslet
-one or two Skunk clowns
-Barnacle Blenny
-Citron Goby
-possibly some type if dwarf angel

That's what I thought. Any suggestions about what they could replace the cardinal with or should they just leave it alone and not replace with anything?

I normally do not make recommendations for a variety of reasons; if you provide what you want I can provide commentary, however.

Huh...I always heard that skunks were the lesser aggressive of the larger clowns. Even ORA lists them as 'a peaceful clownfish that can be easily kept in community or reef tanks'. I want a slightly larger clown. I really like the Clarkii too but I specifically went with a skunk because I was under the impression that they were much more peaceful than the other larger clown species.

Perhaps relatively so. Absolutely so, not at all.

New purchase

New purchase

I currently have the start of a mixed reef, including:
2 firefish
2 black and white clowns
1 algae blenny
2 cleaner shrimp
2 blood shrimp
Assorted snails and hermits

I am looking to add 4 Maldives Lyretail Anthias (3 female and 1 male) or a pair of Kaudern's Cardinalfish.

My tank is 220 gal. Is there any issues with adding either group? Any warnings about either type of fish? Thanks in advance.

No fish is absolutely certain. I understand that. I hosted my brother-in-law's neon dottyback in my tank for close to a year. He was a model citizen so when my brother-in-law claimed him back, I got one of my own. Mine was very aggressive. He ruled the tank with an iron fist. I have also seen 'peaceful' fish who had major chips in their shoulders. Fish vary in temperament even within the same species. I have just read that pink skunk clowns are normally less aggressive then other larger clowns...except, of course, when they are spawning. So for a community tank, the skunk seemed like the best bet of the larger clowns, plus I think they look cool.

For the Kaudern's Cardinal fish, it is important that they be tank bred and a male + female pair. I personally prefer a different species of anthias but either choice will work fine.

Why do you prefer a different species? Temperament? Appearance?

I prefer resplendants or carberryi and would probably increase the number a bit from your plan. Coloration and appearance to my eye are better but it is clearly a subjective choice

This is what I have 55 gallon
60 pounds live rock
4 turbo snails
2 nassarius snails
2 brittle starfish
Snowflake eel
15 hermit crabs
Valentini puffer
melanurus wrasse

I'm thinking of adding two clowns and a rbta as well as a flame angel. But I do have another reef tank if the puffer or flame angel decide to start nibbling. Let me know what ya think
