Pooky's 300

It depends what book or source you look at. I've seen both fish listed as Gold or Orange Spotted. What you have is Siganus punctatus . You can call it Gold or Orange Spotted, it is refered as both. That's one problem with common names :).

But how can you have TWO scientific names sharing the same common name or vice versa? Any ideas what the differences are between S. punctatus and S. chrysospilos since both have been referred to as Orange Spotted Rabbitfish?

Fat little piggy! My goal is to be able to keep these beautiful leopard wrasses long term. I have never been able to keep any single one for longer than 8 months. This one has been with me for about 4 months now so it's doing well so far. Still looking to add others including Macropharyngodon bipartitus, M. geoffroyi, and maybe M. choati.

Leopards have always been one of my favorites wrasses. I had one for about 6 months in my 90, but it did not make it in the tank switcharooni. I'm glad to have another one that is eating and that swims in the open, not cowarding away from the other fish. I did not have it in the tank no longer than 30 mons before Emma said "look mommy, daddy has a new fish and its pretty" Gotta love kids :)

Great shot Kenny

Thanks Mark. I totally agree about leops that swim out in the open from the get go. It's a sure sign that the fish will adjust to it's tankmates. This one did the same as yours. It never had the problem of the reversed wake/sleep schedule and was out and about from the beginning.

I love my kids but if Mom is around, I usher them past the tank real quick like :D But if it's just them, we go through all the fish names :)

On another note Kenny, I picked up another copperband for the shallow tank and its actually eating aquathrive pellets and enriched brine. Now, hopefully it starts attacking the aptasia :uzi:

That's cool to hear about the CBB. After so many tries, I think I have to give up b/c it's just too late to add one to the 300 since there is just too much competition and confrontations from the other established fish. The CBB is just too timid of a fish from past experience to be able establish itself in that kind of environment and find a comfort zone.

Thanks Sara! So when are you guys coming back to SoCal???

Not soon enough!!! I've got 3 places saved on my iPhone for weather updates: Home, Summer/Winter Cottage and Manhattan Beach.

We'll be back this Spring I'm guessing. We'll have to come back out and see how your tank is progressing!

Love the Leopard Kenny. I'd like to add a bipartitus to join my geoffroy but I've got something else cooking right now. I agree with you on the CBB, I think I've tired half a dozen or so. I'm just a fish killa.

Yep, luckily the one in my display has been with us for almost 4.5 years. This is my third try with one for the shallow tank. I really would love to get this one nice and fat and add it to the display in the future. Since they are a hard fish to keep, there is not much info out there about pairing them up.

Manhattan Beach is nice but you guys should check out the Newport Beach area if you haven't already. Spring is a good time of the year to visit SoCal. The weather is the nicest at that time. And hopefully my tank will be presentable by then :o

Dang, Fish Killa!!! You are not supposed to cook 'em! Just curious, steamed or deep fried? :spin2:

Pairing them up would be cool to see. Is the new ones from Indo or Australia? My last 2 were Aussies but didn't fare any better at the end. They did live longer than the previous Indos though. Still, it's no consolation to lose the fish at the end.

Newport is nice too. We used to go up there to go rollerblading along the beach back when we used to stay in Carlsbad.

Yeah, they are all good. We just like Newport a bit better b/c it's a little easier to get around and we found a nice beach for the kiddies to play in.

Whew, did another 110+ gallon water change today and my back is too tired to scream at me. I think this will be my last big water change since I've gotten most of the accessible sand out. I am not going to worry about the stuff in between and behind the rocks. Already got some new sand soaking in RODI so they should be ready to go in sometime next week. This time around, I'll keep it relatively shallow, around 1.5" or so.

I like Newport also but be careful, it can get rowdy in some spots, stay away from the bay side and don't let you kids go near the Wedge. Dang and I was dreading my measly 30 gallon WC..eh I still am.

Kenny, have you used one of you tunzes and pointed it down in the tank for awhile. When I changed the flow down in the tank, it helped move around the sand that was tough to get from under the rocks.

Yeah, we don't go to the bay side. We usually hit the same beach but can't remember the name.

Trust me, I ain't ever doing another big water change again. That phase is over and done with. Too dang expensive to keep doing that long term. It'll be around 50-60 gallons from now on every 2-3 weeks. I'll keep that schedule and see how the tank responds before making any changes.

Mark, I did think about doing exactly that but decided not to. most of the stuff is out and I don't think whatever remains will have any detrimental effect. I don't think it was the sandbed to begin with but just thought I would take most of it out b/c I was running out of ideas. I know people who've had their sandbeds for 15+ years and they aren't an issue.
