Reef Octopus "POV" PRO-SSS-DC1 thoughts?

Yeah then I can understand that more. On a crazy note I had a Beckett that killed me noise wise. Now if and only if your tank abuts an interior wall you can install an air nipple in the drywall and suck from that huge void space and you'd never hear it. ( huge disclaimer the may be dust dirt anything in there so you have to be sure). Solution two, less crazy, but a 2" pvc pipe. Cut it to a foot. Cap one end drill a hole in cap. fill it with a loufa spongish material or even act carbon pellets in a filter bag. Crank it to 6 and itll run. Either the crazy solution or that one will work. Just don't suck anything into the Venturi.

This is what I did last night around 12:30am:

Meet the "shaft". I swear I hear grinding / banging it does stops if I put my finger over the silencer hole.

I normally don't hate anything, but this skimmer is starting to approach that level. <Edit Snip>

I know..need to fix that drain tube I will.

Air intake noise is easily resolved and shouldn't be a big issue for anyone. It's not uncommon with skimmers and many came without mufflers. There's a couple simple ideas here and many more elsewhere on RC.

Other than intake noise, my DC-1 is nearly dead silent. Quietest motor in my system.

After a significant coral feeding yesterday, my skimmer is back to work. Limited skimmate so far but no chugging.

I hear like a grinding or banging noise but oddly it get better once I put my finger over the silencer. I figured out the chugging issue was caused by the valve being closed off too much at a higher power, but now this issue of grinding popped up. Muffler is supposed to be inbound so I will try that once it comes in.

Mine chugged with the gate valve assembly completely removed in various water depths at various power levels...

So we all know, YOU had a defective skimmer out of the many sold. It's shipped back, and your getting a refund. I'm not sure why you keep trolling this form, with YOUR problems that you had. :deadhorse:

As far as the gate valve being removed, that's about the stupidest answerer on here I've seen yet

Makes me wonder if the skimmer was really the issue. If YOU don't know that the gate valve is needed to balance the two

I think we should stop making this thread so negative, and focus it back on the positive note

As for me, I'm keeping mine, again, mine was due to USER ERROR, not saying anyone else's is, but I had no fish, no bio-load, so nothing to skim! :hmm4:

No need to be an ******* towards me.

That was something Jeremy told me to try :) Why don't you take your own advice on negativity and keep it to yourself.

Update:

I was set to sell the skimmer with the new parts Jeremy sent me. However, I decided that I will give it once more chance and I am glad I did. I will get to that later :)

My tank crashed over the weekend and I lost all my fish and polyps closed on all and one suffered from RTN. My four year old was with me this weekend during the crash which happened over night (no, I did not ask nor accuse my daughter if she put anything in the sump and if even if she did it would be still be my fault). This left me with no real bioload to speak of. I may save the crash for another topic if I make one. It also won't be the main focus of this post.

I decided to put the skimmer up for sale. I started thinking about the effort Jeremy (coralvue) and Scott (reef specialty) made to see what could be done to help. I then said to myself why not try out the skimmer with the new parts.

Put everything together with the longer "nipple" on the silencer facing up used a picture I found online as a reference (for the pic: think of this hobby and then bob the builder).

Set the power to 6 and water lever is around 7" gate valve fully open. I turned it on. I was waiting for the noise but nothing. I slowly closed the gate valve to bring the bubbles just under the first white plastic ring. No chugging, rattling, banging or other noises. Well, I be dmd. Tomorrow I will try and take the water to the 6.5" mark.

If you having really some noise issues I would check to make sure that the air intake hose has no water in it and the valve is not closed too much for the power setting your at. The new silencer/muffler and the new body could the fix or just placebo effect? Not sure, but either case it's better noise wise.

I have ton of micro bubbles as to be expected though and I know it will drop. I will let it run for now and if anything changes I will post.

Sadly, now I have no bioload :(

I will let the tank go fallow for about 10 weeks just in case I was hit with something I didn't see or notice. Wait for the tank to stabilize and start over. Around the 7 week mark I will start to plan for new stock and place them in QT for a few weeks after I receive them.

Overall, the skimmer is still overkill IMO for this 57 Gallon DT with rs100 sump. Which could still present some problems if bio load is not enough. I took the skimmer off the sale forum.

Wish me luck!

Thanks,

Paul

PS on a side note, my four year old daughter was really attached to the purple dottyback. After telling her what happened she said: " It's okay daddy once the tank feels better we can start over", I almost lost it. Now if she only listen and not grow anymore :)

I tried this and it seems to be working:

I adjusted my gate valve around what jonny has it set to. Picture and link HERE

- Set water level to around 6.5 - 7"
- Set power level to 6

I did not touch anything! Just let it sit and it not care where the bubble level is, I just left it alone and walked away (not easy).

The foam head seems to be gaining and looks good, but with no bio load I don't expect much. The bubble was about half way. I still just left it and it seem that it will go up on its own.

Open the gate valve if you hear chugging, once it stops walk away and do nothing for a few days to a week. You may want to run some Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) during this period if you normally don't.

Maybe this will help someone else.

Anyway, good luck.

So I came back to this thread that I started a while back and seen that it has been blowing up lol. My pov dc1 has been skimming great up until today and im not sure whats going on. I checked my sump this morning to find it overflowing and foam bubbles all in my sump. I cleaned the cup out and put it back in. I had to open the valve all the way up and adjust the pump power to 3 bars. Its still coming close to overflowing which it never did this. Any ideas why its doing this? Do I need to clean the pump itself? Just seems like its creating an unusual amount of bubbles. Thanks

Maybe something in your water triggered it and the skimmer is trying to remove it. Any chemical warfare going on with your corals? Otherwise the skimmer seems to be okay for me now.

This most likely will be my last update on this thread to wrap things up.

I am very satisfied with this skimmer! It is indeed very quiet now and is on power 6 with water level around 6.5 +/-. The trick is just LITFA. At most just close the gate valve just a small bit. I can't even hear running anymore. I do think the new muffler and body helped though.

Bottom line: It's a great skimmer just give it a chance.

I actually have Fltekdiver's skimmer. I bought it from him for $400. So I think I got it for a steal.

Its currently in my 150gallon sump (filled a little under halfway) connected to two frag tanks (48x24x12) with the gatevalve halfway out of the waterline.

PULLS LIKE A MOTHER. I feed 1-2 twice a day and Im having to empty the cup every 1 or 2 days.

You are new here so ill help.

-don't brag, unless you have pics and quantifiable data. Another words this is a very small skimmer that pulls incredible air to water ratio. Tell us about the size, type, air pull and ratio of your skimmer. Not ur.....gate valve.

-don't jump in a long thread where ur gonna annoy ALOT of people.

- don't try to bump up your post count for the selling forum where the adults are talking.

Perhaps I've misconstrued your post. If so have a nice day. And if Flte does build a nice skimmer I doubt he'd want you talking about it in those terms

what the hell......... way to kook up the forum brah.

Highwind, dont be discouraged by the forum NAZI. I find you input useful as I have been following for a few months now, wondering if this skimmer is the best new thing, or a inconsistent dud. This forum is labeled "POV DC1 thoughts", not "DC1 quantifiable data".

You invoked "Godwin's Law" thereby automatically losing the arguement.

a little note. If your trying to make a stand to adjust the height of the skimmer I used 1"1/4 pvc cut to size to life my gate valve halfway out of the water. I took the 3 pieces of pvc and put them under the feet of the skimmer on my floor. take off the skimmer cup and using "some" force they will slide onto the feet.
