Seems the vertex omega seems to be far better value,

They are pretty different in regards to the shape, neck size and pump.

The RD3 Speedy 50w pump is a bit too large for the Double Cone 150 body, so for the time being it will be coming in with a Mini RD1 pump on it. Hopefully in the future there will be an alternative RD3 pump that will be available that is small enough.

How does this skimmer compare to both the Alpha 170 and BK Mini 160 performance wise (as they are roughly the same price point)? I believe BRS suggests the Alpha 170 for systems up to 200 gallons. I don't see the Alpha skimmers on your site anymore?

I'm currently using a BK Mini 160 on my system with 120 gallon total volume, and love it! I'm also in the midst of slightly smaller build (~100g total volume). I'm debating between the Alpha 170 and the Double 150 for my next skimmer, and possibly even moving the Mini 160 to the smaller system if these would be more apt at handling the slightly larger load.

The Double Cone 150 will fall between the Mini 160 and Mini 180 performance wise. The Mini skimmers are meant to be the best skimmers you can get in a very small footprint. It's hard to any skimmer with an internal pump to compete with a skimmer with an external pump that gains at least 4" - 5" of reaction volume in the body.

The Alpha 170 has a much bigger neck than the Double Cone 150, and would actually be more comparable to the Double Cone 180. I would personally opt for the Double Cone 180 over the Alpha 170 though just due to the smaller neck diameter it has, although the Alpha 170 is still a good performer.

For your 120g system I would suggest the Double Cone 150. The Double Cone 180 would work as well, but I always preach to find the most appropriate sized skimmer for your system that you can get to net the best performance, and the Double Cone 150 would be better suited for a 120g than what the Double Cone 180 would.

Thanks Jeremy!

Looks like the Mini-160 will be moved to the smaller build, and I'll probably end up with a Double Cone 150 on the larger system.

Hi Jeremy,...

you are right.... the 50 Watt RD3-Speedy Skimmerpump is oversized for the Mini DC 150....

Royal-Exclusiv has a very small 12 Volt SineWave DC-Pump under Development. New patented Stator Technology. The Body have only 50mm Diameter.
This Pump is not made in Plastic, its made in Duplex Steel or pure Titanium. The Speed is going up to 4000 rpm.
Perfect Pump for small Skimmers as Double Cone 150 and 130. Comming middle of next year on the Market.

best regards ... Klaus

Thanks Klaus, I will pop in an order for one later today.

Jeremy - What's a realistic ETA for the 150's?

@OffDaHook, I'm hoping that Klaus can have them made up and ready to ship within the next week to ten days or so.

@lemec, it's still available, just use our Thanksgiving coupon code: Turkey16 to get it back down to the 649.99 into price. There's no way we can discount the skimmer any further on intro price without losing a substantial amount of money on each of them, so to get through the Thanksgiving holiday sale I had to raise it back up 16%, and then you can just discount it with the code.

This skimmer is quieter than vertex omega 150? No air noise ?
This skimmer up to 90 gallons max , no?

This skimmer is guaranteed to be more quiet than the Omega 150. That's not to say the Omega 150 is loud by any means, because it's not, but the Red Dragon pump will definitely run more quiet than a Sicce pump.

I would personally rate this skimmer identical to an Omega 150. Somewhere around 130g -150g heavily stocked. I certainly wouldn't go any higher than 150g heavily stocked, and the Double Cone 180 would be more preferable at 150g in my opinion. This skimmer would rock on 120g really heavy stocked with sps / clams.

Hi Jeremy,

I'm thinking of ordering the skimmer 150... cause my current bubbleking mini just died tonight.. Is the $649 price still good... and more importantly, when is it coming out... I need one asap!

Royal Exclusiv is preparing our shipment right now, and it will hopefully be headed out to us on Friday this week. The into price is still good for those, but we don't have many still available on the first shipment.

So if it ships out on Friday, gets to your warehouse next week... Then ships to me in California.... I'm looking at around Xmas time to get the skimmer?

Fo you think I can go 2 weeks with no skimmer? I run a light load but run np pellets...

Maybe I will get the vertex omega instead... Seems very similar?

The Vertex Omega uses a Sicce based pump versus the Askoll based pump of the Bubble King. The Askoll is a much quieter block, and stronger as well. The Red Dragon will definitely run more quiet than what the Sicce will, and the Double Cone will be silent, period, such as your Mini 160. You will also get a much larger range of adjustment with the Red Dragon adjustable venturi than what you will the Omega. The Vertex Alpha skimmers have about a 600LPH our or so range of adjustment on their pump, however the Omega's do not have as much, it's only about 100LPH of range of adjustment. In my opinion that is not all that much of a big deal though.
