SC Aquariums Owners Thread

I personally dont like to move sand. Too many things get trapped in it that it could cause a mini cycle. But should you want to move everything get a rubbermaid tote for temp storing the live stock and such as you empty the tank then move them into the new tank.

Newly set up SC Aquariums Tank/Stand

I have never had a glass tank before but was really impressed by the one I won at MAX. I always thought of the petco style cheap glass aquariums as too fragile and was scared to own a glass tank, so I've always had acrylic. The 120 I got is beautiful! The seams are so clean and the glass looks really clear. I got a wood stand too from SC Aquariums and it is so nice! I did some basic pvc plumbing instead of the flex it came with and used a return pump I already had. It's cloudy now from the sand, but I'm so excited to see it in progress.

I will post pics when it's all done. It will probably be a bit before it's got livestock added. I have to make sure it's cycled first. I think I got a head start on cycling by getting live sand from someone and I've been curing it with rock in a tub for a few weeks.

I have the same question as Mike1970 about the ceramic media. I'm not using it now, because I never did before when I had a reef tank. It seems like there may be mixed opinions on it so I'm not sure about adding it into the sump. Anyone running the ceramic media the system came with successfully or not?

I did not get the ceramic media as I just got the tank only tht said I did place a small bag of it tin the sump so I always have media for my HOB overflow filter for QTing etc.

I doubt it will make to break the filtering of your tank.

OK- heard back from Steve over at SCA- yes- they are willing to move the position of the Eurobrace to the top of the tank. So, that means using a regular "Ghost type" overflow system under the Eurobrace is now possible - as the water surface will now be about 1 - 1.25 inches below the tank top. I am still going to use a customized 48 inch internal overflow because I am trying to really make use of the surface skimming action of a longer smooth overflow. SCA will also take out their stock middle tower overflow and seal the three holes in the bottom of the tank by putting a 12 mm glass piece over them and siliconing it to the bottom of the tank. You wont see this, if you put any substrate down on the bottom of the tank. They will also drill the back of the tank to your specs. I am awaiting the time frame and costs of the modifications before I make my final order.

Update!
1. All SCA tanks will have SCH40 American Size Plumping Kit (starting now)
2. We will have the black MDF cabinet for all tanks from 24 gallon to 150 gallon (as standard cabinet).
3. We are sourcing a cabinet factory from Corona California. We will be making Oak Wood cabinet for 50 gallon to 240 gallon tanks. It will be Black and White. Custom finish is available at extra time and cost.
4. All tanks that come with 3 holes will come with Herbie overflow plumbing kit as default.
5. All new Oak Wood cabinets will be 36" tall (finally)

Thanks pelphrey! I found this out when I talked to Steve about the 80 Gallon I just purchased. It's way easier to do your own plumbing now for sure! :)

I would not move the sand personally. Once you disturb it you release a lot of "stuff" trapped within it typically causing more issues then it is worth. Should you wish to reuse it then I would rinse it multiple times which negates its "liveness".

As for everything else get the new tank up to temp and same salinity as old and move the items over. I keep lights out for a day or two in a new tank to aid things not stress out and figure out the new lay of the land.

Saw this too, glad to see they are reading and understanding our needs and making improvements!

After the aquarium arrives I am getting ready to move my Nanocube inhabitants and LR and LS to the new tank along with the water. Since it is a larger tank, how should I do it?

Usually I advise taking this time to ditch the old sand bed if it was a DSB and or over a year old, and I go w/ new dry sand, and either a scoop-top half inch of your old sand to seed the new.
If sand was not that old you could rinse in SW well and reuse, but I do prefer fresh and new.
Try to have your params as close to old as you can and swap on over w/ your established LR and there should be no real cycle issues.

OH BTW here is a FTS on my 90:

the TBS rock as been with me for 2 days now.
need to take the extra heater out of the DT
was a very quick scape as I got a royal gramma as a hitchhiker and wanted to let it settle in...

Heres my progress so far. I have one small issue I have to work out and some solvent for my overspray but here's my plumbing just about complete. I wish I thought it out more but I think it will do the trick...still a ways to go.

I assume this is done on a regular basis for tanks that have holes drilled in the bottom. I'm interested in knowing more about this option. Moving the euro bracing up is going to be a task all on its own, correct?

wondering what every one has in the CUC?
post your size and crew plz

80gal - Phase 1 of my CUC consists of 5 Trochus snails, 5 magarita, 5 astrea, 5 blue legged hermits. Added a pep shrimp last weekend but he has passed. Not sure what's up with that. May try another in a few weeks once tank gets more established.
