Although my tank isn't quite as developed as Bobby's/GSM's and many of the other systems shown here I still wanted to contribute some photos of my shallow reef. It is a sump-less 40 breeder which I believe measure 36x18x18. I really like this thread. I would also like to read the thread to Saldarya/Bobby's tank and the zeo system so if anyone has a link please post it.

Nice 40BR the dimensions of the 40Br are 36x18x16 :)

Hey GSM, Thanks. That sounds more correct...it was late and I didn't feel like looking up the exact dimensions. Thank you. Your tank looks great and thanks also for starting this thread.

Bob1, if you are asking me... the dimensions are 36"x18"x16" and it is a standard aquarium from a LFS (I believe from All-glass). For filtration I have a HOB Refugium, a HOB Deltec MCE600 skimmer, and a little HOB power filter mostly for circulation (and also where my ATO drips into).

Wooo, shallow is great!

coralfarm123, what is the glass thickness on your tank? I've been looking into a 96"x12"x8" for a while now.

GSM,
Thanks for sending me Jame's info. That has to be one of the nicest guys I've talked to. Good prices and very helpful!

Wow very nice tanks in here!
Shallow reefs are the best! ;)

Here's my little one

It's a 47,2 X 27,6 X 17,7 in, I run it since october 07.

I have a question for the shallow tanks owner: Do you experience "jumping issues", from your fishes, due to the shallowness?
I had quite a lot of problems with gobies at the beginning (lost 1 amblyeleotris, 1 cryptocentrus, 2 mandarins), but now everybody is doing fine, no more jump (but I keep a fishnet over the tank since few monthes... one of the mandarin jumped between the meshes of the net, though))... so I wonder if it was an issue due to the "beginning" of the tank, the time it takes for the population to feel confortable, or is the shallowness a potential danger?

:)

I see most of you DONT have sand. Is there a benefit to this. I think it looks great. It seems very clean.

sand or no sand????? what should i do with my 14 gallon biocube that I am setting up soon?

Beautiful tank Sabine and welcome to the club!

I haven't experienced any jumping yet. I hope I don't. I am planning to find a way to cover the tank to prevent this, but everything i've researched takes away from the tank.

It's really a preference. Some people like SSB others like BB and some like DSB. Whatever works for you.

Go with sand or in my opinion the tank will look too sterile and unnatural. But thats just me...I have yet to find a BB tank I actually like :D

Thanks 143gadgets ;)

About the covering, I made a framed fishnet: took some thin woodsticks (the kind used for wall decoration or framing, like a flat stick of 0,5 inch wide), cut the pieces just the size of the tank measures, then glued it to form the frame, and tighten 3 or 4 layers of pond fishnet on the frame (few layers will tighten the size of the meshs of the net, to narrow its size and won't allow the fishes to go through it).

It looks like this:

With the idea of independant frame, I can take it off the tank whenever I want.

Hope it can help you finding the good idea for protection.

Well since I made a wise crack on this thread I might as well post a pic of my "shallow" tank per Nick's (The Green B*stard's) request. It's amazing I fit this tank in the back of my car:lol:

Pic is from about 6 months ago, I've since had to pull the purple rim cap in the corner, it was killing my gyre, and growing way too big ramming int everything. I now run a single 175 15 Iwasaki in a Lumenarc on a lightrail. I wish I could get a better pic, but my camera sucks.

I know you only have your grade 9 and all, but you made a wise crack in my tank thread not this one.

Oh and sweet tank, I dig the lightrail with 175w idea very energy efficient, good for Cali.

Well that means I can make a wise crack here:p

Here's the lightrail assembly
