Shallow reef tank Club

Thanks for the link, very cool. I was leaning towards a lagoon sort of biotope tank to begin with (I like the top-down option and lagoon makes sense) so you are right that seems the good way to go with a shallow tank. As for the screen/lid/canopy, I have this idea to use the 'Big Boy' to create an island/peninsula at the edge of a kitchen with a counter top over it, with the idea that no critters have the airspace to jump out. Basically a canopy which is also a counter top. Still pondering implementation ( http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2279241 ) BUT I am going house shopping today so maybe this thing will actually get off the ground (of my friend's garage) and I can really finally actually start a BUILD thread...

That is certainly one of the more unconventional builds I have seen on here. Cool that you are drawing inspiration from some other tanks. Surprised you haven't added in the volcano tank version as well! ;) I find the volcano tank to be a very cool design btw. One day down the road I plan to do something similar along with a wave maker. Or maybe I'll retire on an island in the Pacific.... :p

My shallow.
Dimensions. 60x24x16.
At the moment I have one PJ cardinal.
One cleaner shrimp.
Two peppermint shrimp.
Red brittle star fish.

Thats right folks another Club thread. I would like to have a place for everyone who has a shallow tank to post pictures, and share experiences. there seems to be quite a few shallow tank builds popping up and want to have a thread with pics of each one. :)

Only rule to Rule to join the club
Your tank should be longer or deeper than it is tall, unless it is a very large tank I would have to say 20 inches tall maximum??.

1st post should include the tanks dimensions a brief description of the tank and a Full tank shot.

@ evolutionZ - First post pretty much sums up I think what we consider a shallow tank. :)

I've always been a fan of the shallow reefs. I'm having built a rimless 20x20x12 with 1/2" acrylic and a corner overflow now and will be picking it up this weekend!

My old setup was a frag tank that eventually evolved into a display 31x31x12. I have since taken it down and moved the contents over to my 165 gallon display:

what is the definition of shallow here? i personally think any tank taller than 14" is not considered shallow.

I'm with you. A lot of the tanks in the back end of this thread have migrated away from the actual shallow theme. Obviously there is no real answer, but anything taller than 14" and/or less than a 3:1 L:W ratio isn't exactly a "shallow" style tank.

That's your opinion.

I am not aware of any universally agreed definition of a shallow tank. The term of reference was set in OP's first post. Hence, a big majority of the contributions made to this thread are consistent with the OP's definition of shallow.

You're correct. You're also inclined to comment because your tank is 21" tall. Nothing about that is shallow.

My tank is 40" long, 21" wide and 18" high, which is consistent with the OP's terms of reference and is therefore shallow in the context of this thread.

Why is 14" the cutoff? I have a 9 and a half foot by 4 foot by 15" tall tank and my tank is more shallow than most posted on RC. But what if it was 18, 24" or even 36" tall?! I think the OP explained it best, and frankly I think nitpicking over a few inches is a little silly. Especially in this thread, everything is relative and I think the idea is to stay within the general terms as described in the OP and post and enjoy the tanks we have, together.
