Not completely sure, but almost positive it is Odontanthias fuscipinnis. A better picture below. From deep, deep water in Hawaii and one of the worst shippers. A pair just landed in Japan, well two seperate fish that paired up when kept in captivity. Price tag for the pair is 900,000 yen!!!!!!! T

Looks like a couple of female square back (Pseudanthias plerotania) anthias to me.

Cool thread. Here are a few pictures of my 2 hybrid/ mutant scopas tangs. I have both of them in a 300 gallon tank and they just recently stopped liking each other. Maybe one thinks it is uglier than the other. LOL. I may have to get rid of the other one of them to keep peace in the tank. I don't particularly think they are beautiful but just the oddness of the fish peaks my interest.

A similar looking species, possibly the same, has been seen and collected in Japan as an unidentified Pseudanthias sp. It is certainly not in the Odontanthias family and I believe they have been seen in Kashiwajima.

Regarding Odontanthias fuscipinnis, more than two made there way to Japan. One from the group was less than 2" and the coloration and markings are just beautiful.

For those of you who aren't aware of the currency exchange rate, 900,000 Japanese Yen is over $9,000 USD!

The lower one has the classic lavender belly stripes of a female Pseudanthias pleurotaenia. Correct body shape, correct fin shapes, correct (albeit pale) color. I guess my question is, what about them makes them not pleurotaenia?

Saw A.nigricauda just like this in HK last September, was really nice looking , black + yellow + white with the usual "ear" marking of nigricauda in yellow over black.

That is why I included the website. I believe all the pics are from a trip. There are no Carribean or Red Sea fish. I didn't really look around the whole site, but maybe they say where the location is somewhere.

I can't find the reference for the life of me but long ago I read a paper which explained the aberrant patterns of certain surgeonfish, especially zebrasoma species. Apparently, this group is susceptible to a certain virus or fungus which damages the development of chromatocytes when they are post larval which leads to the funky blotchy patterns we see in many scopas and yellow tangs.

Coralite you are correct, it is a fungus rather than a virus they get as a juvenile that causes the ugly (IMO) pattern. The majority of these tangs are caught in PNG. Copps knows more details about the fungus. T

I think you seriously underestimate the rarity and cost of this fish. I am pretty sure this specimen was purchased for a price north of $400.

that is one cool looking wrasse. it looks as though its body was cut in half and then put back together but they didn't align the lines correctly...lol..great looking fish..

IMO those tangs look ugly. Like you saved them from an oil spill. I love rare fish, but as far as those hybrids go, I'd rather have just the one fish, not mixed. Maybe they look better in person.
