Silent and Failsafe Overflow System

I had 1 question if any can help me out,I am getting ready to start the plumbing and was wondering at what height would I put my open channel at?I have an external overflow and I was afraid of water dropping to far(loud) from my DT into my overflow,if that makes sense

I deally you want to have the sipohn (Main) pipe a 1/4 inch lower then the other two to make it so that it will start first or you can put the open up by 1/4 over the others and leave the siphon and emergency at the same height.

gary - no, not - you - I meant ME as the "un-intenede hijacker" HAHA!!

autodave: what scott said above is correct - just to add one thing to that: drill all the holes at the sme height, and add 1/4'' -3/8'' of vertical height to the plumbing of the other two fittings. Can be done by cutting a piece of pipe 1/4'' longer that adds height. If this is not clear - let me know.

You know what the great thing is? I finally understand this pretty well and feel pretty confident that I will have no porblem with this set up. It sure does help to read the thread and take out the critical info and save it in a word doc to referance.

Tee&Scott: I understand the height between the standpipes but I was wondering what would determine the water level in my overflow box?would it be the open standpipe?(Sorry if this was already covered,I am having trouble understanding this part of the system

atodave:
2 things ultimately determine the height of water in the overflow:

1. The height of the opening to the main and durso style/open channel drains

2. The ball valves on your main and open channel.

You can adjust the water height up or down to a large degree witht eh ball valves. My system is approx. 1'' of drop from the tank - which creates no noise.

question, can this be modified to an external overflow to come out the bottom, just by putting the elbows in the over flow? if that makes sense. I just ordered my tank with this in mind but just realized I have the holes i nthe bottom of the over flow. If I have it go through with the vents in the actual over flow with the elbows set up similarly will this work?

Darb- see my link above to my build thread - look at the pics of my overflow - see it that is relevant to your question...I am not sure I understand - but I think that picture will help you and I figure out if this can work for you.

thats what I want to do but I only have a 3 inch over flow and was intending to do them sideways over a 60 inch coast to coast verses your back to front set up. will this still work?

I might make 4 grand tonight... snickers... yes sideways works.

Hey Folks... I finally got my tank filled with water and started running it tonight... it is quiet! The only sound I hear at the moment (and I don't have much running on it yet) is the trickle of water going over a chamber in my sump). I have a few little problems to work out (i.e., final adjustments with the elbows in the overflow, a bulkhead leak that's really small, etc.), but otherwise just wanted to say THANKS for all the help here (it's been awhile back that I had all my questions). It's late now, so no pics tonight... hopefully I can get them up here tomorrow.
