Skimz SK 201 Kone

this is deffenetly a good thread for me so far. I have been checking these skimmers out for my new build.

do you guys think this would handle a 250-275g system upper end medium load?

where do you have the air adjuster valve set? also what size are the bubbles in your skimmer neck? i find no matter what i do they seem to be bigger than normal, well compared to my deltec anyway

I have the SM201 and I have the air valve set at about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn from completely closed. I would start with the water level adjusted all the way open, the air valve opened about 1/4 turn from closed, and then adjust the water level accordingly. I started with the air too far open and was getting some huge bubbles, but now have some nice tiny bubbles. This thing pulls quite a bit of air, so the air needs to be dialed way back.

I run mine open. You can close it down but it doesnt make much difference until its about 2 turns from being all the way closed. Then it will start to choke it back. What happends is the air get choked back and it allows the pump to pull more water.

Myself and one other person I know that had it had the same experience. It works great but just has a good hum to it.

i have the es5000 pump on my sm202 recirc and pump is pretty much dead silent, while playing with the air adjustment pending where i put it, it gets a little hum but have found the sweet spot on the pump and made other adjustments to dial it in

It's about at 9 1/2". That happens to be the depth of my sump so I just dropped it in and it worked great. I haven't made any adjustments to the air valve or gate valve, both wide open. I would guess you might need to close the gate valve some if you were using it at a shallower depth. I think these skimmers work great in a bit deeper water b/c the platform where the water exits the skimmer lifts the body up by ~ 1 1/2".

Tagging along and curious to see the outcome using the SM201. I am currently using a SRO XP-3000 on my 180g and I've been considering moving to this Skimz SM201.

i believe the 2000 pump will eventually replace the 2800 pump.

The 5000 is a quiet pump on the sm201. Not silent but about the same as the bb pumps. I would consider them to about equal. The small footprint on the skimz is really what sets it apart. Just my two cents

Hey Mojo,

What is the stick called that holds the propeller? The ES 5000 I just got doesn't have it? Something like a front support? I see it on the youtube clip when he switches out the propeller. Where do I order it to switch it out?
Thanks

just a quick question, Should i pull apart the es5000 and check the impeller for proper seating before i fire it up? im realy stoked about this skimmer.

offroadodge,

The ES5000 does not have a drive shaft like the ES2000 and ES28000. However, if you would like to make sure that its slotted properly you can always open the pump and pull out the impeller then align it back in.

Thank you.

For a 120g tank with a 40 g sump set about 4 months ago, light load for now, would you recommend the skimz sm201 (the one with the 5000) or the sro xp-2000. I have a different skimmer using 2 x psk 2500's right now and the noise and startup issue are getting to me..
