Steve,

How soon after its set up do you plan on adding fish?

I added sps the week after my rock was completely cured and haven't lost anything yet. Even though the sand is dead the live rock quickly seeded it and I had a ton of pods with in a few months. Start with a frag or two (freebies) and see how they do, if they grow and maintain or gain color, more than likely you're good to go.

How long do you think it will takes for my tank to be ready for corals? I plan to add corals 2-3 months later.... What do you think? What is the best way to expedite the process :D
That's it ... you're fired!
I would be careful taking advice from Clint, his success with corals is VERY unique, he definitely has the Midas touch when it comes to SPS. If you're using ZEOvit or other probiotics then you can probably add corals a little earlier than the norm, or you can try the method that Clint recommends, but as you already know, the tortoise wins the race every time.

Clint, i am looking at a month or two. All my rock has been bleached and air dry then sit in the RODI for almost 18 months... So they are dead rock. I will seed the rock with Live rock... Thank you for the advice :D

Mike, i am not adding anything till all my parameter are stabled. I am not in a hurry... I have been waiting for more than 18 months lol

You might also want to seed your Tropic Eden sand since your rock is all dead. In the mean time if you get any nice coral, I'll watch em for ya!

Shame you are so far away I got a little vlaminge a year ago and he is getting too big for my 300. I might trade him in down the road. He is a good pooper.

I love the Vlamingi tang. The first 2 tang will enter the system will be the Vlamingi and Dussumieri. I will add yellow and purple last. What do thing about a large school of Purple and Yellow? I know yellow is cheap and easy to get while the purple is kinda hard to get a large school in small size. I will be broke .... :(

what do you mean by large school?

I mean large group of Purple tang and Yellow tang. Do you think it is a good idea?

A group of Yellow tangs is nice...

a group of anything is nice! Sorry I was a bit cryptic, but how many are you talking about? 5, 10, 15? For me I find the purple to be a much more beautiful fish, but it has the personality to go with it. In my system though, the yellows are just as agressive. I did get 3 "hippos" in at one time, VERY small, and they have grown up to be great pals. I would suggest doing the same with any school. Get them all quite young.

It is hard to use Chuck's system as an example though, because there are so many fish in it, that different "rules" apply in terms of fish behavior. I think a 480 is big enough for a school of 5 - 7 moderately sized tangs, so I would look at ones that stay under 9". Maybe even target 7", and don't be too trusting of published sizes. My ABT is over 12" now.

In theory the yellows go to 8" and purples to 10", but I have seen some pretty darn big yellows. Another great fish is the yellow eye kole, which goes to 7" and is a detrivore, but caution is needed based on my experience. I purchased 3 but one arrived DOA, and so the dominant one left harrassed the other until it literally gave up. I just happened to be there with a net and got it out. It healed up in a couple of days, and I gave it away. I would not be afraid to try with a collection of 7 very small ones though, like 1 - 2".

Even better IMO is the Bristletooth Tomini Tang which grows to 6", and also is a detrivore. This is theone I would do a school of first. They are not as available though, so I would try and set up a group through a supplier like LA, and have them ship them all at once.

Good luck! :)

Thank you for the picture Chuck. That is really nice. I am looking at a group of 20 small yellow tangs :D. I heard the green chromis killing each other is that true?

Steve, I'd stay away from the green Chromis'. Just add a few extra anthias ;)

When are we going to see this thing up and running?
