I removed a half dollar sized crab after I discovered it and believe it was eating some large fish (including a flame angel). A couple of months later, I lost another and I suspect a pistol shrimp. (a could a pistol shrimp even kill one and (b do Flame Angels bed down in the sand more than others being more at risk?

It would all depend on how large the pistol shrimp is. Do you ever hear popping from the shrimp throughout the day? It is usually pretty simple to figure out if you have one in your tank or not. If you have more than one crab such as a stone crab they can and will kill any fish they get ahold of.

Flames aren't nearly as hardy as they used to be and can be problematic. Could a crab or a pistol shrimp take down a small flame, sure; but I'd be more inclined to go with a more pedestrian cause. How long had you had them, how big, were they eating .......?

Is there a consensus on what the cause is for the Flames not being as hardy... collection practices?

Global warming, ocean acidification, pollution, habitat destruction, ...

Give it another couple of years and the fish will line up to be shipped off to a reef tank because there they may find the better living condition.
Wouldn't that be an ironic refugee crisis... :headwally:
