TDB's 320 SPS Rebuild

Thanks I stagger the lighting, and shoot for about 250-350 Par. directly under the center of the Radiums it could get up to 600 and notice really no ill effects.

Over the summer I have only been running T5 and Led which is averaging 250 par and everything looks great. but for a general Rule target 300 for sps and stags or those that branch upward can go higher up to 800.

No MH at all during the summer? Any changes in color or growth because of that?

Trying to get back on the map for TOTM I got some better Picture Post processing software that captures the essence of the new reefs colors. Below is my August 2015 update. I hope your enjoy!

Your skill and ability to wring amazing colors across the range of acro species you keep year after year will get you there Tom i'm certain, you'll get my vote when the time comes mate
Can i ask why you're considering the pump change out to the gyres, is it different flow you're after or just less eye distracting equipment in the display that has you considering the change. If it's the latter i would say go for it mate.

This is one of my favorites along with the red and blue tipped beauty :)

That frag rack gives me a belly ache, I want them all so bad!!
That's me leaving hand prints, with greasy nose and eyebrow prints in the middle, on your front glass!!
Beautiful shots!

Tom, what is the new editing software you are using? The new photos are amazingly saturated with colour.. The tank looks crazy nice!
I'm curious, the last batch of photos have really brought out yellow. There is a tall, branching acro that you have fragged that used to to look more green and now looks more yellow- the frags of which are on the left of your little egg crate rack..
Has this colour evolved over time or is it the software?
Also, are you using any additives in this system?
I know your lights have gone to the 14 k from radium, you use biopellets and a ca reactor and that you used some gfo early on to reduce potential po4 from the rocks or sand...
You've said that the system has been very stable for quite some time now.
Just wondering a couple things.. Is it the software or the bulbs that have brought out the yellow.. Doesn't seem like anything else has really changed..
How much and what kinds of food go in the tank? Fish food only or any coral food?
Are your n and p where they were months ago? I think it was .02 p and .2 n..
Sorry for all the questions.. Just trying to get all the facts on your unbelievable system..
There was a question way back on page 3 or so where you were asked how you get the crazy growth rates.. Your response was a pm to the person asking. If you are not comfortable posting the answer here.. (I guess I've now asked the same question twice!) I'd love to get the same pm! :)
Anyways, fantastic tank!!

Based on what Tom said, he is only using Blue Plus T5s and Royal Blue LEDs, no Halides for a while now during summer, that may be part of that. That and perhaps an animal sacrifice or two...:deadhorse:

Ha ha. yes the software does bring out and do a better job white balancing. In the past I used Canon DPP and the color was really flat and under saturated etc. I think most pics we see on here are this way.

I had some time off last week and found the proper way to WB and bring out the color without saturation. If you look at the pictures you see no saturation in the egg crate or the Mag float. The Adobe Light room does amazing in WB, sharpening, and clarity.

So yes the post processing software does display the colors closer to the natural reflective color of the corals without over-saturating the image with lightroom.

On the practice note yes I do make changes. This summer I am running only T5 and Led and that has seemed to enhance the color. especially the reds and yellows/green. Those corals are a neon yellow/green If I ask my son they are yellow but my girlfriend says green. Under leds it looks yellow and under T5 yellow/green.

Also a reefer with very good success recommend floating GFO by the skimmer passively and he has had success coloring up corals this way. I am going on a month with this.

As far as posting some of my other ideas I am very careful. I have received no less than 10 PMs from PPL complaining that they went with leds because of me and were disappointed that I went with MH. Another guy lost his tank to BPs and told me he followed one of my writings. For a while and time to time I dose sodium nitrate. I am careful to say that is the secret recipe but we know if over done one can lose their tank.

So in summary, Yes good photo post processing software with WB, Good lighting with a lot of blue to bring out your yellows, Very Low phosphate's, some kind of carbon source for me it is small amount of BP's and a trace amount of Nitrates dosed on demand . Very stable temp 77.5-78 and salinity and best quality salt you can find.

I have a more formal write up of everything I am keeping notes on and finding success and will send them to you after I dig it up.
