The Life Reef Skimmer Club

It was tempting to get a different skimmer today. A guy had a new 400 gallon rated reef octopus for 200. A new in box bubble Magnus for 300 and a huge deltec for 500. All way cheaper than life reef. I was only considering the deltec but I heard people talking about how their deltecs only get a little scum during feeding, heard some other key phrases about the other two and decided the skimmer wasn't where I was gonna skimp. I know it's more money to have a guy make them by hand but if the other skimmers don't work then there isn't savings anyway. But then again 200 versus about 900 is a pretty huge difference....

Your Lifereef is going to get anything during or right after feeding either. Pretty much no skimmer will. It's irrelevant as it will all catch up anyway.

I just ordered a 36 inch skimmer from Jeff. I received his wet dry and just opened it this week. He needs to use about 90 percent less packaging and lower his shipping costs but I guess at least it was safe.

I agree shipping is expensive.

Anyone here own the

SVS2-24 in sump 22 1/2" tall?

You can see below for the specs on my tank by I think this is going to be a pretty good fit for me. Was curious if anyone else here has this skimmer and how well it works.

The top of the outlet pipe is just barely above the water surface.
So not quite fully submerged.

How often do you clean the body of your skimmer? I'm starting to notice a light brown film on the body. Just a little.

Try raising the water level in the skimmer just a bit. Aim for all of the brown material to be in the neck. You shouldn't have to clean the body

Agree with this. Some brown in the lower neck, but none in the body. I think I've cleaned the body of my SVS3-30 maybe 3 times in 4 years.

Hey guys, what ratio Water:Vinegar should be used when giving equipment including pumps a vinegar bath?

Also, how long should you leave the pump and skimmer operational while giving it a water bath and should you do a thorough rinse afterwards?

I have the SV24 in sump for about 1.5 years now. I am have moved my tank 3 times and upgraded twice and think I am having issues getting it dialed in...
I am actually starting to think that I have it too low and that there is so much crap in my water that it causes it to foam like crazy when I get it adjusted right and maybe I need to just let it flow like crazy for a bit?

Hi fellow LifeReef skimmer owners. I have a question, I'm cycling a 90 gallon tank with a 75 gallon DYI sump that holds about 30 gallons of water. I have a LifeReef SVS3-24 skimmer, I have a Eheim 1260 pump hooked up to run it. Is this a little light on flow for the skimmer? Would I be better off with a Eheim 1262, I know Jeff recommends the Mag 9.5. I like the Eheim pumps, I've had good luck with them in the past.
I'm making lots of bubbles with the skimmer, I'm 2 weeks or so into the cycle. Using ACE ammonia to cycle.
Any input would be appreciated......
Thanks
Ed

1262 would be more in line with the mag 9.5
The only difference between the 1260 and 1262 is the impeller. if you have the 1260 get the impeller for the 1262.

It is not the impeller that is the difference, it is the volute. The 1260 has smaller openings than the 1262.

im thinking about getting a vs3-30 to run in-sump, i like quietone pumps and have a 6000 that i can use as a feed pump. jeff recommends the mag 12. i suppose why try to fiddle with something thats already a performer by trying a different pump or bigger pump than suggested by the guy that makes it? one thing that is really driving my decision to change to this skimmer is that jeff took less than 24 hours to reply to my email. im still waiting for reef dynamics to reply to an email about a skimmer i already own. wrote him about 2 days before lifereef. i dont want to trash the ins skimmers from them but ive never really been wowed or impressed. it does do what it does so good on them for that.

ok so for all the owners out there... is it true that water depth doesnt matter so long as its not OVER the recommended height or should i baffle my sump for the skimmer? does anyone recomend a better pump over the mag 12?(its not in me to NOT fiddle or tinker or consider "what if")

thanks.

If you maintain a stable depth in your sump with an ATO then it doesn't really matter how high the water is. If the outlet is completely under water and your water height fluctuates you'll see the skimmer fluctuate from dry to wet skimming or wet to wetter skimming...

These skimmers are far more stable than others for one simple reason. You regulate water height by adjusting the flow coming out of the skimmer not how much air or water is going in.

No one can compete with Jeffs customer service. It's been a year and a half since I bought my whole setup and he still is as willing to talk and give advice as if I were a first time customer whose business he was trying to earn.

thank you for the prompt reply. im currently baffle-less. i did build an acrylic box for the ins135 to sit in so it has a stable depth. i can always make another one for the vs3-30. would the -30 benefit from the upgraded venturi? i do think my mind is made up to purchase one of these skimmers. now to save up......
