The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

I think his tank is after the split on page 5 or 6. It's really nice, and only a 54gal! It's just crazy the amount of corals he has in such a small amount of water.

3' deep would be a major pain to keep clean, or to aquascape, or to do anything near the bottom! but i think it's worth the extra labor just for the volume alone, not to mention that tall tanks look awesome! I almost bought a 47gal column tank, but opted for the 54gal corner instead. I'm glad i went with a 54, but i really do like how the 47 is so tall. I'm still trying to talk my wife into getting it for our sons room. I have one False Lemonpeel Angel in my 54gal, and plan on getting another one. If they do end up maiting, i talked her into setting up a tank to raise the young in!

Not a huge update, but I just pre-ordered an Alpha 170 cone from Royal Exclusive. I am hoping this satisfies my GHA issue.

What ever happened to Dudester? I wonder how that tank is coming along...Are you out there????

Also, Jesse - When are you going to put those frags out?!? You've had that sweet tank set up for some time now, and i've been hoping for some pics!

Things are really just starting to settle in. You have to remember, I just filled it 3 months or so ago. Most of the rock was dead, so I don't want to rush too much.

I may get to laying things out some over the weekend, just haven't had much time to play with things much lately.

Well i'm glad to hear that you're not rushing. That's probably about the hardest part of the hobby for me. I have a hard time waiting to do anything, but it's the best way to go about things i think. I guess with 20+ years you know exactly what your doing by now. How are the fish settling in? That Rainfords Goby is awesome!

Fish are all fine. The rainsford's in the overflow, but still eating well. Haven't figured out for sure how to get him out. I may have to drain it to the sump one of these days.

Just an update everyone. I just got a new phone with a nice camera (FINALY!!!!), and have been taking lots of pics of my tank with it. I'll try to get some of them up within the next few days.

Also, WHERE IS EVERYBODY?!?!?!?!?!?!?! This thread used to be going so fast it was hard to keep up, and now there's been a few days that if i didn't ask a question, no one would post anything! Damn nice weather!!!! It's killing my RC time! HAHAHA!!!!!

I'm still here. :) Just been too busy with school (my own and my kids') to add any updates to what I've done to my nine-deuce. I've done a lot, though.

I, like you, will get some updated pics up soon, too.

I've been killing red-bugs which were the actual cause of my corals' problems...

2 more doses to go... /sigh

MR-4 skimmer should be installed this week though.

My Yellow Tang now develops Cataract!

My Yellow Tang now develops Cataract!

I will get some discussion going.

A few weeks ago I rescued my Hawaiian Yellow Tang from a mysterious illness. It has recovered nicely and has been quite active and completely normal until last night. I noticed his right eye has become white and opaque... a cataract? Even though it is still swimming normally but it starts to hide behind the rock a little bit. Any suggestion on what I need to do?

Here is a picture of the normal eye.

Here is the abnormal right eye. You can see the opaque lens covering its eye.

im here as well, i browse the the forum for hours every day, every time there is a new post on this thread i read it, not much has happened to my tank tbh, ive had some cleaning going on in the sump and changed to D&D H2ocean salt from the tm pro and tetra mix and also cleaned out the overflow box on the tank which takes water to the sump as it was caked in corraline, other than than my tank is basically as before except ive got a montipora in there, i will also post a pic on here when i get round to taking one

I have some significant equipment improvement in my tank set up in the last couple weeks. I installed a ReefKeeper Elite (RKE) controller about 12 days ago. After some initial installation frustration and learning curve, the system is now working perfectly. The controller monitors my PH and temp and controls various equipments based on time of day, PH, and temp. It also has a wavemaking mode which controls two of my modified maxijets pushing a maximum of 3700 gph at random. The flow is awesome and all my cyano have disappeared. The controller also has two input for switches which I use to control my ATO pump and monitor the sump water level. So far I am quite pleased with it. I estimate it saves me about 11% in electiricity which means I will recover my investment in about 8 yrs:)

Wow! Nice, Simon!

I don't know what to say about that "cataract" on the tang's eye. That's weird. Maybe it'll just clear up on it's own. That's weird that he hides behind the rocks some time, too. Mine is always looking for me to feed it. It'll eat nori right out of my fingers.

Eye cloudiness can be caused by poor water quality or by scratching the eye on a piece of LR. It doesn't look like pop eye, at least yet. Have you checked your parameters lately?

Thanks for the suggestions. I did test the water this morning for alkalinity (10) and Ca (440). I will do more water testing later. My corals are all pretty happy and extend nicely so I didn't think it was poor water. If it were poor water, it probably will affect both eyes and may be other fish.

Well i'm glad to hear from you all! Even if it's not much, I like to hear what people have been up to.

flipsidelo - I too have school 2 nights a week, and my 4.5yr son is in his first year of school. I know exactly what you mean about being too busy!

Hookup - Sorry to hear about the pest problem, but it sounds like you've got it under control. I think it was you who posted that they were doubting thier husbandry skills because of coral problems, so now you don't have yourself to blame anymore! Hope you get it cleared up soon!

Simon - Popeye was my first assumption, but i'd give more weight to what Joey said. I've only been keeping fish in my tank for a little over a year. Previous was just reef and no fish.

Michael - Is that your first SPS piece in your tank? I can't really remember what all you had in there. Congrats on the new coral!

Joey & Misled - The small change to your avatars is hilarious!

It sounds like everyone is taking this time to do some major cleanings and upgrading. I'm hoping this summer to finally get my new skimmer, (and a newer car!) and really get my tank set up how i'm really going to want it. I need to add about 40lbs of Black Beach sand, and have been on the search for some Tonga Branch rock to finish off my aquascaping. I've gotten a few new frags, and some of my older ones are really starting to grow out well from the addition of a 250watt MH 20k. Again, i'll get some pics on when i can. I'm glad so many people still are chiming in every now and then
