They're finally spawning!

Yes, my black ocellaris have finally spawned. Now I know why my female has been sooo aggressive with me lately. Every time I stuck my hand in the tank it was attacked vehemently. Here's my o's, I'll post some pics of the eggs asap.

So, are you interested in raising the hatch? Or would you like to give them to me? How far is Aurora from St. Louis?

Congrats! I always like to hear of a spawning event. It means good things for all.

hi guys.

Congrats on the spawning.

Talk about trading/buying fish will get the thread closed so let's not do that anymore.

So, what are your plans? Are you going to try and raise future nests?

If so... these 2 resources are absolutely mandatory:

Those are almost perfect black occies. I'll bet the spawn comes out a perfect black. Would be a shame not to try and raise the spawn.

They actually are jet black, that's just some dirty glass in front of the female.

As for raising them, I really don't have the time or the space. But, assuming he wants them (and I'm pretty sure he does), I'm going to give the eggs to this local guy that raises those onyx things ;) .

I am concerned that I'm going to disrupt their cycle since I have to put a tile in the tank for them to spawn on. Also, do you think that a change of tanks (really saltwater) at this early stage is detrimental to the eggs? Do you think the eggs can be shipped?

Thanks for the compliments. And here's another bad pic.

if you want them to continue spawning I wouldn;t change a thing, although I have no experience with changing the brand of salt. IF it ain't broke!

IMO There is no chance that they will survive shipping.

As far as pulling them out of the tank to hatch in a different container, only do that with tile or a pot. Also, be sure to keep the eggs underwater the whole time as their own weight can rupture them out of the water. Take them out of the tank and keep them in tank-water on the day of hatching and run VERY GENTLE air bubbles (big bubbles) over them to keep them moving just like the fish do with their fins. YOu could possibly do this a couple hours before hatching and transfer them to a friend to raise. You can get a battery powered air pump for the transfer.

Grats on the successful clutch. Sorry to go a bit off topic, but I'm curious how old your pair were when you got them and how orange they were?

I am also planning to get a Black Oscelleris (and a standard F.Perc) for my first fish tank and I'm curious how long it to yours to lose their orange nose (if they had it at all)?

Ilham, I have no idea where they came from because I am the fourth owner. I think this pair has been around quite awhile, from what I understand, they spawned for the previous two owners as well.

As for their coloration, as long as I have owned them (about 5 months), they have been jet black.

I also confirmed that Rod will be raising the fry, as long as I can get him viable eggs. He's about a half hour from me so it shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully these lil' buggers won't miss a beat once I add a tile.

Chris
Transporting the eggs should not be any problem. Take them 1 day before hatching.
