Tunze DOC Skimmers

The main thing that is tricky is that for in sump use you have to install 3 extra pieces and they can be frustrating at first as they have to be seated just right. Just take your time putting it together and follow the manual.

but the 9010 comes with those pieces right? does it make the footprint bigger?

im sure i will understand it all when i see it but just geting advice before i get it

I plan on getting rid of my sump and getting a 9010 for my 75 gallon tank and put it in the corner of the tank. Does this sounds good? I also want to order two 6000s and run them on a single controller or a 6000 and a wavebox. Not sure which way I'll go yet.

The 9010 includes those pieces.

Andrew, your plan is fine but the 9010 would need to be more or less centered to use a wavebox as the water level would bounce every where and while it would skim it would not be ideal and many microbubbles would exit.

It depends, on a 29gal average tank, no problem, go Nano skimmer. If you mean a packed to the gills SPS tank, go 9010.

Why would you need a bigger skimmer if you have a packed sps tank? Do you mean packed with fish? This statement seems odd (I mean, whether you have 1 or 50 sps if you have just a few fish shouldn't you be able to get the smaller skimmer?)

Also, does the Nano come with the sump parts? If not, how much more are they (and do you really need them?) And, lastly, my water level is 12", is that too high? We're looking at total water volume of ~44g, will be a mixed reef with mid to light bioload. Can you comment on the performance of the Tunze Nano -vs- CPR Bakpak II?

thx!
Angela

SPS like most corals produce toxins. Since SPS cannot reach out like LPS they tend to engage strongly in chemical warfare. They also produce copious amounts of mucus to keep sediment and algae off their tissue. That is why strong skimming is needed.

The nano has no sump kit, it needs a relatively constant 7.5-8.5" water level, to run it in sump you just have to maintain that depth. I haven't used a BakPak in sometime and generally don't like to do comparisons but I will say that I am quite confident that our skimmer is the best in the under $150 market and beats many in the under $200 market.

:( Oh, well, this makes it an impossibility since my sump water level is 12" I couldn't raise it enough to give it that few or i'd not be able to remove the cup.

Thanks,
Angela

I have an ASM G-2 now and am looking at the 9010.

One of the things I love about the ASM is that I have a drain line from the collection cup to a 2 gallon hawaiian punch bottle for overflow.

One of the things I hate about the ASM is that the 2 gallon bottle sometimes overflows in an hour for no apparent reason as the ASM went bonkers.

I think I've read this but wanted confirmation, will the 9010 stop skimming if the collection cup fills up? If not, does it just push skimmate out the top somewhere?

Thanks!

Didn't think about that. What about if I ran the summer in a sump or one of the Tunze sump kits? Would two 6000s or one 6000 and a wavebox be best?

elzool- yes, when the cup is full skimming stops, the cup holds 700ml

Andrew, I prefer the 6000 and wavebox, the 9010 includes the sump kit and that would work fine.

you're a beautiful man roger vitko, thanks!

I'm planning my new sump and wondered about the riser tube I've seen in some pictures... how much space does that add to the footprint?

I guess I'll go that way than. Thanks. :)

Is it correct that I cannot use the foam extraction unit with the 9005?

This would be for in-tank use on a 54g softie/LPS tank, low fish load.

Read the tread since I'm using a 9015 ..Here's something I found that can potentially help the guys with skimming problems

The outlet pipe when its inserted into the skimmer affects how the skimmer works ..

If you insert it too deep, the flow of water exiting this pipe reduces .. and all these actually forces a higher than normal water / foam column.. in this case you get pretty wet skimmer and alot of microbubbles coming out everywhere

If you insert it too shallow, then you practically get a skimmer that either doesn't rise to the top of the collection cup or you get a very dry skim.

Maybe Roger can shed more light on this .. since after I cleaned my 9015, it was skimming alot wetter than usual .. and the cause was the outlet pipe was inserted too deep..

Hey guys - I just bought a 9005 and have noticed that there's a small center hole at the back of the skimmer 3/4 way up that's ejecting water out whilst using the sump kit - is this normal, or is there a plug u need to put into this hole?

It's normal. . .no need to plug it.

:D
