Tyree SPS corals

Just wondering...

What does it mean if your SPS frag is a Tyree??

I got a frag of Tyree Ponape and Tyree Birdsnest yesterday...just don't know what it means to be Tyree.

lol

To simplify it, Tyree is the last name of a guy that has successfully kept SPS for longer than most and has selected some (very nice) corals that he propagates and sells fragments on a limited basis, hence the term 'Tyree Limited Edition'

You can read more on reeffarmers.com...

FYI, if you want to save yourself some money, DONT read reeffarmers.com because once you start.........

So what gives this guy the right so name these corals? He isn't some diver that found them in the ocean. He is a hobbyist that came up on some rare corals and decided to name them. Doesn't sound very fair if you ask me.

Many agree... But hey, try it for yourself, follow his proceedure, and see if you have the same success that he does...

In most cases, he doesnt name the corals. The person that 'discovered' the coral names it and gets the credit for doing so... Tyree just brings the coral into the limelight...

I don't see whats unfair about it though...

He has no more right to name the corals than you do.

But you are allowed to name them reefer08 LE's and sell them the same way. Nobody is saying you cant

Re: Tyree SPS corals

it means you probably paid extra for a name ;)

exactly. basicly he adds limited edition to the name and charger WAY more for the same stuff you can find elsewhere(much like other places do as well BTW)

bunch of crap if you ask me. Just go find nice corals you like and buy them if you think the price is fair.

Its become an epidemic of people naming corals that a few years earlier wouldnt sell because they dont look good....but put a cool name on them and charge $100 for a 1" frag and it all of a sudden becomes limited edition:rolleyes:

I actually find itr kinda amazing he would ahve obviously paid an inflated premium for a coral, and not even know why.

Semper- I have some land for sale in florida- real cheap!!!:D

Wow.. didnt your mom teach you anything?

:D

lol...you guys are funny...he, tubs and snyper have done something others havnt been able to. gotten really good friends in LA (the place where all corals are imported into) and can cherry pick what they want. Then since they had done that they put there name on it and now they get hundreds per frag. also they have been keeping SPS way longer than the avg hobbest hense the reason they have friend in the importation biz. its the same reason why people buy Jaguar instead of Hyundia...

i dont know if i 'overpaid' or not...actually, i know i didnt. i feel it was a good deal, so i guess thats what matters.

I got 20 sps frags/mini colonies (TWENTY) for $175 shipped to my door. www.yourreef.com amazing stuff! some were tyree, some were tubs, ORA etc etc. i got some reeeealy nice pieces and i am def pleased with it - hence the not overpaying in my book. some are small, and i mean SMALL, but for $8.25 a piece you cant go wrong as far as im concerned. when these bad boys grow up it will be even nicer and my tank will be full. All for $175 lol

All of this is called branding.. and if you are not a part of the business side of this hobby, then you obviously don't get it.

I find it kinda amazing that you assumed that he overpaid.

Not everyone that has these buys or sells them for the name, but because they are nice corals. If your go out and pay $90 for a frag or wait on a list three years for it thats yours (or their) poragative.

I have bought plenty of "named" corals before, and have never overpaid IMO. Just wait for them to be out for a while, or wait around for someones tank to grow, or wait, wait, wait...you'll find them for $15 or so a frag. Not bad in my book.
