UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

I carry 5 X 50 G rubbermaid trashcans in the back of my Toyota tacoma truck. Just air the tires up to max pressure and go a little slower. Be sure and tie them down good. I tie to each corner as well as tie them together. You loose a bit of water on the trip home but it's not bad. Just wash out the truck when done.

For removing the water, I just use a large powerhead with a adapter to attach a garden hose to it and pump it right into my tanks after draining them. When I used to store the water, I'd put a empty can on the ground and just pull a full one over and pour it right into the can on the ground. It was faster than pumping it.

Oh and the water IS FREE. It usually takes me about 45 min to get 250G of water. ;)

I take 2 big trash cans to UCSB and fill them each half way, so as to prevent spilling (I have an SUV, not a truck). When I get home, I have a third giant trash can with wheels on the bottom that I wheel over to the tailgate of the car, then just use a short, fat tube to siphon the water from the two cans inside the car in to the one big can. Then I wheel that back over to my yard (it's a condo complex, so I can't park right by the house). When it comes time for a water change, I just have a "sump pump", like the kind used for pumping water out of a basement during a storm, and I use that to dispense water to my tanks.

Wow! That's a lot of helpful info! Since I only have a 30 gallon tank, I should be alright with a few smaller 10 gallon jugs or so. That way I could manage it a little easier until I get a better plan.

make it a day trip =) state st. has tons of great food and shopping ;)

i took my dog last time. he had a great time. we both got some exercise. his first time at the beach. he was one tired dog. he took right to the ocean though swimming and frolicking in the surf.

Yeah, I go down there alot with my family. We love eating on the pier at Moby Dicks, and we've strolled up and down State St. a few times. Had I known about the free SW, I would have been filling up everytime I was down there. Better late then never I guess.

Two 55gal drums in a Scion XB and a nice holiday drive to UCSB found everything happy on Memorial Day.

Had I read about the hose earlier, I would have brought a new one. I have a 15ft'er I used once just sitting here . . .

I'm probably headed up this weekend and will bring a hose if I go.

hey carlskoi, How's the new tank coming along? Glad to hear your dog had a great time on the beach. See you around. You coming up for our next meeting? It's a Bills house and he has some awsome corals.

not much progress on the tank yet. i did order the aluminum to line the skylight shaft with yesterday. anolux III from www.anomet.com

i did really enjoy coming to your place. when and where is the next meeting? maybe i can coordinate it with my next trip for water.

i wanted to wait a little longer before i start a build thread because it is going to take a long time until i have corals and fish in the tank.

The next meeting is next thursday, 7 June at around 630. It will be at Bill's hous ein canarillo. If your signed up on the club site, you should get an email from dave with the address. Glad you made it out to my place and enjoyed talking with you as well. Hope to see you again sometime at one of our meetings.

Freebirds is awesome. I miss that place. Took the wife to the Palace on Cota St. Sooo freggin yummmy.

I went up there last Saturday and picked up 30 gallons. Hose was intact and everything looks good. Thanks guys for maintaining our source of NSW.

2 X 55G in a Scion xB? Can the suspension in that little car handle the weight? We're talking close to 900lbs! I think the rear tires would shread under that weight! :D

It certainly pushes the limits but I really only put about 45gals in each . . . so closer to the 800 mark. Considering it is a 5-passenger vehicle (a person being 180lbs in the industry), I really only exceeded the capacity by about 50lbs.

And I still got 27mpg with the load. :D

Has anyone ever tried transporting water in a 55 gallon rubbermaid tub? I imagine the water will slosh a litte bit, but it has to be somewhat effective. I can't seem to find 55 gallon water jugs anywhere.

Just post that you are looking for some in the forum and chances are you will get all the barrels you need for a few bucks.

Well, I actually got smart and called the local recycling center, and they had 2 in pretty great condition for $4. All they need is a little vinegar water, and some washing, which I already did, and they are good as new. The bad part is they don't stand tall in my 4 runner, so I need to figure something out. Also, how much does a siphon cost, and where can I get one to get the water from my barrel to my tank?

Well, I did it. I went down to the pump, and filled up one of my 55 gallon drums, and two 5 gallon jugs. It worked great. The new hose looks awesome. I have definitely hit the jackpot with that place. I can't wait to do a water change in my 29, or fill my new 55 gallon tank (whicever come first), with the new water. It will make life soo much easier, and a little bit cheaper.
