UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

Hi all, my friends and me are keeping Mediterranean cold water tanks so we take water directly along the coast, but here in Italy (and in southern France too) many reefkeepers use marine water without additional filtering. The only issue is the density, usually a bit higher in mediterranean water, so they have to add tap water or better RO water. Others, along the French Atlantic coast, uses ocean water as it is. So I believe you could use marine water wherever you can take it –OK, just as far as possible from rivers or lagoon outlets, from sewages or industrial areas and harbours!
 
Hi,

Any updates on the NSW spigot at UCSB? i.e. if it is still closed to the public until November?

I just drove by UCSB today and there is construction going on in the area but it looked like the parking lot where I thought the spigot was (based on the map from the OP, which I know is several years old) is accessible.

Also, if it is still closed what is everyone that used to use it doing for water now?

I haven't been up there since they closed it down. Been making my own RO and mixing. Man it's getting expensive. Would be nice if someone local could do a drive by and see if it's open. Trying to get ahold of Scott up there who runs the REEF and water treatment system is like pulling eye teeth.
 
I will see what I can find out. I haven't worked for D&CS since '09 when I graduated from UCSB but I still have some contacts there. My guess is we just have to be patient but you never know. If we do gain access, the water will likely be anaerobic and will need to run for awhile before it can be used in our tanks.
 
The system is a constant flow thru system. About the only thing that would be anerobic is the small amount of water sitting in the lines going to the shed. That shouldn't take too long to flush out.

Let us know what you find out as many of us are waiting to go back to NSW. ;)
 
Anyone have any info on the Scripps water? Is it still there? This would be amazing for me as I am currently mixing my own and I have to use tap water which is obviously a problem. If my main source can be from Scripps then I wouldn't have to worry about all the trace junk that comes in the tap line. My only problem would be for fresh water top offs. But the money I save on salt could be used to buy RO water
 
Wrong geographical area. however, as far as I know, scripps is still gibing out NSW.

I called and left a message for both people, hopefully I'll get a call back from one of them with an actually date of when it'll be open.
 
Bad news, I just got an email from Ray Aronson, the project manager for whatever they are doing there at UCSB and got this response from him.

He says, "Project date is end of Feb 2012."
 
Update: MASVC had a field trip at the facility today. Tap will be available beginning of the summer due to politics of the new building being built by state and federal funds.
