UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

Just finished setting up my new 90 gal recently. Wow, what a bummer having to buy water for it. I know it sucks for all of us but I actually go to UCSB. Try driving by that place every day and not being able to get water. Bad times....
Anyway, just wanted to complain!

So I work for Mobile Marine Lab and we get all our NSW from the harbor for our tide pool creatures. We pump it into a 500 g holding tank. I have been debating using this water for my reef tank for a while now. I read alot from this thread and I'm still indecisive. I also see that the UCSB tab is gone. Do you guys think the water from Channel Islands harbor is alot worse than the UCSB water? I cant decide if I should use the water.. If anyone can help me out with my decision that would be great..

Where is this place in Channel Islands Harbor? IMO, if it go through sand filter, then it probably same as one from UCSB. Is this place open to public?

Is the water filtered in any way? Where exactly does he pump it in from?

If it is not filtered, then I sugest before you use it that you filter it through at least a 1 micron filter. The ones that you use on the front end of a RO unit. Other than that, it should be OK to use, depending on where he's collecting it from.

Is there any way any of us close by could get in on some of the water?

i agree to treat it with a 1 micron filter sock. you can get them from aquaticeco dot com in florida. they are cheap. the sand filter at UCSB filtered to 20 microns.

i used the 1 micron sock even after getting the water from UCSB and although it did not take out much there was still stuff removed from the water.

Would it be ok to pump it from the small beach (kiddie beach park) at the end of S Victoria Ave?

Carl, I still don't see any pics of anyone successfully using natural seawater off the California coast. With all the heavy metals and high phosphates, other than the cost, I don't see the benefit. And, ultimately, if you lose a coral, how much did you save? Add in the cost to remove the excess phosphate, micron bags, UV and ozone, where do you end up?

i don't see those photos either.

show us those photos of the successful tanks using this water.

a related topic- Catalina water also comes from our local ocean.

who is using that in their coral farms and tanks? the Long Beach Aquarium uses it and they have a pretty nice reef tank and several other nice aquariums with corals. i know they change a lot of water in their reef tank and have a low fish load.

i was at the LBA last weekend and their reef tank while looking nice has some colonies that are not thriving. some tip burn and die off.

Atlantis Marine World on Long Island also uses ocean water out of the Long Island Sound.

what to do? the filtering to 1 micron is easy as the water goes in the holding tank. Catalina water is treated with ozone and filtered but not to 1 micron, 20 i think like UCSB water.

for me it may be a moot point soon as i may be selling the big truck that i take for the water. but that still leaves Catalina Water in my area. and it is a lot cheaper than making water also.

i saw a piece a few days ago on local TV about NOT eating crabs and lobsters caught neat the channel island due to some chemical concentrating in them that is in the water.

i'm still hoping there are some people out there using it with success. are you reading this thread?

Carl

My main tank in the house over 2+ years old is using Scripps water. Never had any problems. My outdoor grow tank is also using this water.

I found critters growing in my NSW storage tank!!! I have no idea how they were able to grow with the weather being so inconsistent- there were mussles, a clam, a feather duster and a sea snail

Anyone got any updates on if the water is back on line yet?

Does any one know if the water spout is still there with construction going on?
Last I spoke to them they had a date of completion of November this year. However, I put in a phone call to Christoph Pierre this morning, got the answering machine, Hoping to hear something later on today. I will keep everyone posted.

that is so awesome. do you have any circulation or temp control in that tank?

carl

Thats what is amazing to me, there is no circulation and no temperature control on the storage tank, and the water is filtered through a micron sock before going into the storage tank so that means the little critters were plankton when they started out 6+ months ago-

Dave,
Yes there is but the public can't access it because of construction that is going on in the area the spigot is in. Hopefully some time in November it will be re-opened to the public.
