Want to ride with me through my 58g setup ?

Lovely tank! Had I known a 58-gallon could look so sweet maybe I wouldn't have ordered a 225, hahaha! :)

Painted bottom? Kool! What kind of considerations would one need to keep in mind before painting the bottom of the tank? Obviously it would suck if the paint peeled away, or if it leached something harmful into the tank.

LOL ! thanks Jenn . Believe me I wish I had a 220 .:D

It's only painted on the outside bottom , much like people do to the backs of the tank .;)

Between you and Bomber it seems like I'm always waiting for update pics .

Nobody could ever compare to Bomber. At least Lunch HAS a camera knows how to use it.

Joe, now that you've been running the Deltec for a while could we get a breakdown of the pluses and negatives of the Deltec needlewheel vs. the MRC beckett? I've been pondering the idea of changing my MR-6 out for a needlewheel or large airstone skimmer but I sure am happy with the way the MR-6 performs. I just wish you didn't have to use such a big pump to run it. However, the benefit of using the big pump is that it is processing a large volume of water in a short period of time.

BTW, a while back I promised you an update on how I felt about the OM 4-way. I was having problem after problem with mine leaking. So Paul sent me a mag drive upgrade and then I started having problem after problem with the drum jamming in place. This went on for a least a couple months with paul sending me new drums and other goodies to no avail. I was getting sick and tired of it to be honest, but Paul stuck through it with me. We knew there had to be something wierd going on but we just couldn't figure it out. Well, I redid my CL plumbing a few weeks ago and finally found out the problem. I have cheap HD ball valves on each outlet of the 4-way. Turns out one of them had broken and I didn't know it. It was still hard to turn the handle (like all cheap ball valves) so I would have never known. The handle had broken from the valve and the valve was stuck closed over 3/4ths of the way so each time the drum would rotate to that outlet it would encounter major back pressure. This is what caused the leaks before Paul ever sent me the mag drive upgrade and this is what was causing the drum to get jammed in place. Haven't had a problem ever since I fixed the valve. So my advice is that the 4-ways ARE top notch and it would be a wise investment to use one. However, I would make sure and talk to Paul first about the penductors just to make sure (if you are still thinking about doing this, that is).

I had an OM once, sold it after a few weeks because of my own ignorance. I had it set up on a OM3K as a closed loop and the exhaust from the pump was blowing on my sump heating my tank up in the 90s. I ended up just selling off all of the parts to the closed loop. The OM was nice though...doubt I will run a 4 way on my 58 but I might get the 2 way squirt. Or just get a scwd, but that seems like a lot of back pressure.

I am supposed to be getting my 58 in a few hours, but I need to find someone to drill the back. I want very little plumbing in the tank.

I'll join the club.
Just got my Tunze and getting my Aquacontroller soon. I hated the timers in my stand.
Joe - how big is that regal. do they grow that fast?

He's about 5" big , I've only had him about 4 months so I don't know how fast he grows yet .

Travis ,
Let's see , Deltec VS. MRC .

MRC

Cons -
1-some tweeking here and there .
2-needs big pump .(Not electricity friendly)
3-it's large

Pros
1-it will rip the teeth right out of your head if you stand to close .:D Best skimmate I've ever seen .
2- it can dry skim and wet skim .
3- good flow through rate .
4-very adjustable (air intake and flow through.

Deltec

cons

1-limited ways of instalation
2-no real good way to controll flow through
3-small amount of flow through
4 -small collection cup
5- does not wet skimm well ( easy to overflow )

pros
1- energy effiecent
2-produces a good semi -wet foam
3-small
4-no real need for tweeking

Head to head MRC makes cleaner water .

But the deltec needs a lot less tweeking and is more energy friendly .

If I had the room for one , I would of stayed with a beckett .But the trade offs are good .

I found that I did a lot of tweaking with both of the products I got from MRC...reactor and skimmer. That was my only complaint.

Mike

I agree, my MR-6 required a lot of tweaking for many many months. I can't tell you how many times I overflowed the skimmer and filled the 7 gallon collection bucket in less than an hour. Then I finally made it over the peak of the learning curve of this skimmer. This skimmer took me a long time to get used to even after running a MR-2 for a couple years. But now that I am used to the MR-6 I have the air flow dialed in exactly where I want it. The flow needs to be tweaked every couple days. I run it wet but it still gets a little build-up on the inside of the top of the riser. Every other day I turn the gate valve the smallest turn I can give it to keep it skimming 2-3 gallons per day. I clean the collection cup and riser every other week and then I have to re-dial in the flow with the gate valve and start all over. Now that I'm used to it, it doesn't bother me to have to barely turn the gate valve every other day. That is all I have to do with this skimmer.

Joe, why can't you control the flow rate through the Deltec? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm just not very familiar with needle wheel skimmers. I did run a Turboflotor for a year and a half but that's it.

macnreef - you got rid of you OM unit...slap yourself for me will you!!! on a 58my 4way is about the best thing for flow EVER!! my tunze is nice too though :D

Deltec suggests you don't contorl the output , but you can the input . I guess there are ways around it , I'm just fickeld by useing a gate valve .

I just like the controll of a beckett better , they give you more options .(degrees of skimmate)I overflowed this skimmer twice and dumped about 15 gallons of water on the floor.

Deltec is a great product , I'm just used to having better performance .

I would like to try a deltec but I guess for now, since the money is all tied up, I will just use/keep my EuroReef RS5-2.

Mike

yeah where are the updates (as i haven't updated my thread in a LONG time )

can we start a 58gal club. we have some seriously nice 58's running around here
