What Color is Your Carpet? {pics please}

Thanks Minh
With your pic next to Gary's I can easily see the difference. You can see the longer tentacles and the more pronounced verrucae in the Gigantea.

On my gigantea (which is very large) some of the tentacles exceed 1 1/2" in length, and they taper to a pointed tip. Large haddonis the tentacles are always short and compact with bulb-tips, even on the largest specimens.

LOL if you had said "D&S" or "S&D" or "TRA II" I would have clued in sooner. I was thinking this was some new supplier you guys had all found or something ... anyhow thanks for the clarification.

PS. It's been a while since I've hit my TRA and done some reading ... Doesn't Sprung talk about visiting an anemone farm somewhere? Man, I gotta find me the contact info for that place.

Farm raised S. gigantea too. Too bad they are not rare in the wild so farm raised Gigantea is not in demand. Everything point to the fact that S. gigantea should be hardy and easy to raise if we have our tank set up right.
LIGHT, CURRENT, FEEDING

You're right, Minh. Judging from where gigantea naturally occur, you would think they would be the carpet anemone species most tolerant of environmental conditions. As we know, nothing could be further from the truth in captivity!

OptimusReefer- Besides the varying "frillyness" of host carpet anemone species, {gigantea being the most "frilly", mertensii the least and haddon's somewhere in between them} I believe there is a connection between "frillyness" and diet. If the anemone is receiving a lot of light, and only occasional feedings of small {planktonic} prey, they tend to flatten out more. Heavy feedings of big chunks of food create more pronounced folds. This is my experience. Can anyone corroborate?

Finally, my turn to post to this thread with a picture to contribute! :D

I found this guy at a LFS on Saturday.

I'm not 100% certain but I think it's S. gigantea. The tentacles are uniformly long and narrow, they vibrate or wiggle constantly, the oral disk tends to fold up abit instead of lay flat, and the verrucae are purple. I tried to get a photo of the verrucae but my camera has no macro capabilities and I think I got in too close so the detail is kind of lost in the lack of focus. (Sorry, I tried .. need a new camera!!)

It's only about 6" right now.

The pictures also don't show it, but there is a subtle yellow colour in the tips of the tentacles, that I hope will darken up in time.

It appears to be fairly healthy and robust. It attached instantly, it is holding on in a spot of quite high current, and it's even capturing mysis and some cyclops-eeze (of all things) when I feed the tank.

Goodluck with him. See if you can view the video of BonsaiNut's Gigantea. He really have the anemone under very high current. I think that got to be the secret in keeping them.

Nice gigantea, delphinus. I've noticed that most of my big anemones feed rather heavily on cyclop-eeze, among other very small size meaty seafoods. Maybe they are more planktonic feeders than previously believed. It's good to know that I don't need to toss them any more Mackerel.;) Here's a recent anemone pic I thought would be worth sharing.

I just got him on 10/31/04. Wish him luck.

He's a lighter green then most I see here. Is this the more common color?

Gorgeous anemone, Zedar. It appears multi-colored.
FWIW, my LFS just received an anemone that is very similar to Tagamet's. I'm not so sure these red/orange anemones are carpet anemones.

Thx

But he has turned greener since that picture, I think. I'll snap a shot of him tonight if I get a chance. Probably due to the lighhting. He was in a dimly lit holding tank for a week.

I'm just thankful he made it thru the transport period.

Tagamets anemone looks like maybe an atlantic carpet ? never seen one that color before though.

Wow thats a sweet blue you have Gary. I didnt know they had so many color variants till after i purchased this one. I would have probly purchased a blue.

NM, im satisfied, this guy is healthy.
