What fish with smasher?

Hello gang,

I hope that most of you have had the chance to check out my g. smithii (Ike) in his 2gal cube. I am planning on moving him to a 12" cube (7.5gal) and would really like to have a fish. It would probably need to be a 'swimming fish' that lived in the water column as opposed to a perching variety - because anything that sat on the ground or in a cave would probably get whacked by Ike.

My question is two part. What type of fish would you recommend (if any) with a g. smithii? And which of those, would be suitable for a 7.5gal tank?
Thank you in advance.
Cheers,

- Chad

may be a single clown?

damn im jelous of your mantis. that is the same kind i want but cant find it ,did yours hitch hike on you live rock? if so what kind.

A Large Maroon Clown and as always add the fish first before the Mantis. That way the Mantis doesn't think it's food for it.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I was hopeing that a clown would be ok, and adding the mantis last is a great idea!
One thing just occured to me though, I have a frogspawn coral and plan on adding a torch as well. I have had a maroon clown in my old 20gal that insisted on hosting in my LPS. I have heard that this is not good for the coral and will eventually lead to its death. SOrry to throw a kink in things, but what do you think?
Would a small clown still be ok? Would a firefish work instead?

Hutton,
I had the same probelm as you and couldn't get a smasher anywhere! Even the online stores wouldn't ship one to Canada. It took me about a month of getting the word out but finally a local reefer friend spotted one hitchhiking in a LR shipment and grabbed it for me. One will turn up, you just need to be in the right place at the right time. Good luck.

i dont live in canada though arizona and the prices out here are rediculas. 40 bucks for a chiagra(spelling) but god he is a beatifuyl mantis i hope you have him for a long time

Thanks, I hope so too. The only vender that said they would even be able to ship one to me said that it would cost more than $150.00US!!!

ill agree, it took me forever to find someone online that would send me one for less than 50 bucks shipped. Its all about just finding someone that is willing to catch it and ship it instead of catch it and kill it. Keep looking........ im curious as to how big the fish must be as well....... i guess as long as its in the water column it shouldnt matter, right?

That's what I'm hopeing. As long as the fish is in the water column and the mantis is well fed...
Do yo think that a firefish would work in a 7.5gal tank? A pair?

the only down side to a fire fish is the fact they will hide behind the rock leaving it open for attack from a quick mantis.

I agree about the firefish. I have a purple FF in my 20 gallong and he likes to sleep under a certain rock at night. Would be a sitting duck for a mantis.
I also think a maroon clown would get too big for any kind of nano.

Very cool video BTW!

Thanks guys for the headsup about the firefish. I guess I might try a small clown - which one stays the smallest? Percs?

Matt,
If I had a spearer I would make some good damsel videos, but my mantis is a smasher and probably would never look twice at a damsel unless it ventured onto the substrate or into its cave. If I had a large tank I would add a damsel, but a 7.5gal is too small.
Maybe I should set up a 20gal spearer tank as well :p

What type of mantis would you recommend for a 12 gallon nanocube. I'd love to watch some fish get speared.. but wouldn't want to buy damsels every few days for my mantis..

I am concerned with my firefish.. hed had been living in my 5 for several months. I recently added a wennerea, and the firefish behavor changed dramatically. I had thought the FF was dead because i would go a week without seeing it, but sure enough, it was still alive because after the mantis was added, it would stay out in the open a lot more.. The two lived together for the past month with no apparent problems...however, its been over a week since ive seen the fish, so I suspect there may have been some fowl play... Ill keep you updated... My peacock and allardi clown get along great! They even tag team crayfish gladiators!!

If I were you, I would get a small clown , percula, or saddle back, and try to get it to host an anemone or LPS for "protection"....
