What fish with smasher?

what about a purple dottyback? they might be smart enough to stay away from the mantis.... and tehy are pretty quick themselves.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am actually not familiar with that fish. Would it work in a 7.5gal? (the new size of my cube)

last time i checked they dont get too large..... i currently have a small pseudochromi (purple dottyback) in my 2 gal for the moment with my mantis, and they ahve gotten along so far very well. (though my mantis is small right now, just got him!!!) they tag teamed a few feeder fish today, but we will see how the mantis treats him as he gets a little bigger. Also, if you put the fish in first, and then introduce the mantis, it might not view the fish as food but as a part of the landscape. just an idea and an observation that ive had so far. lemme know how it ends up foryou!

sixline wrasse helps keep the pods in check, doesn't get big, is quick, is much less skiddish than a firefish... I have one in with my ternatensis the actually hang out together.

Matt,
Check out the home reef video thread in the reef discussion forum. They have some suggestions there for sites that host videos for free. I made my video and then had 102tech.com host it. That site does charge though.

pisces,
Will a 6-line work in a 7.5gal tank? I had one in my 90 and it might be my favorite fish in the whole world but I thought it was a swimming fish that needed lots of room (despite how small it is).
Cheers,

- Chad

I am going to have very little rock work - just a pinnacle jutting up from the center with water all around. The tank will be 12x12x12.

Sweet... normally I would be a little worried about keeping an invertibrate with anyone from the wrasse family but... I think Ike should be able to look after himself.
Whatever I decide on, it will be between a perc. clown or 6-line.
Thanks.

sounds ok to me as an only fish, anyone think the tank is too small?

I think your tank is too small for a wrasse of any type. They're a free swimming fish that need a lot of room in spite of their small size. In addition they sleep in the rockwork where they'd be an easy target for a mantis.

This is a situation whwere a member of the damsel family would be appropriate. I'd recommend a blue devil or yellow tailed damsel. They're hardy and colorful. In addition in nature they maintain a relativelly small territory. When snorkeling I've seen dozens of them in the rockwork, each defending their small territory of one to two square feet.

jmo,

Agu,
Thanks for the tip on the wrasse. And I would feel a lot better about putting a damsel in with a mantis than a clown...
I know that a tank this size is best suited to a small goby but the mantis makes that impossible. Do you think that the damsel would be too cramped in a cubic foot tank? I would really like to go with one if so. I think the yellow tail blue is particularily handsome.
Cheers,

a damsel would be a good tankmate i think (cause of cost, swimming area needed, and the aggressiveness factor)...... my only thing that would bug me would be the feeding aspect. Unless you let your mantis feed on only live food, the damsel might be consistenly trying to steal the mantises food. not a big gripe mind you, but something you might want to consider when adding a fish to the tank. I actually just got rid of my pseudochromi for that reason....... he and the mantis were getting along fine, but the psedochromi was all over his food and the mantis's food too. just a little experience of mine for you.

Chad,

IMHO the yellow tailed or blue damsels are your only choices.

The 12X12 might be a bit cramped, but if you don't pack the tank with rock I think you'd be OK.

The one thing I'm not sure about is their potential for jumping. But you have that risk with any fish.

ya, i agree with agu..... it is your only choice probably. SO if your deadset on fish, try it out and let us know how it goes!

There's a blue damsel in with a huge peacock at my LFS and they're quite happy together, it is a 20G though.
